5 out of 5 eggsVERY NICE

Pros: We use an Everfocus professional DVR at work that cost about $900 and this little DVR is just as good minus a couple of unnecessary features. User friendly, excellent price, just add your choice of hard drive (takes about 5 minutes with one screwdriver). I was expecting a piece of junk to have to make work but I was very surprised and what I got for the price. it feels a little cheap but works very well. Setting it up using the console and mouse is a little tedious, do yourself a favor and just setup the network first and then log into it from your PC to do the rest.

Cons: lack of documentation is annoying but if you are like most techies.. we like figuring it out ourselves rather than reading instructions anyway. I think you can find the docs but it wasn't really a problem experimenting with it to get it setup.

Other Thoughts: This would be a really good choice for a small business, home security, or other situation where a high dollar security DVR is not in the budget. Lots of features for not a lot of money..

3 out of 5 eggsFolow Up after a month

Pros: I can watch the video on a Remote PC and on my HTC G1.
Low Price

Cons: After using this for a while, I have found a flaw in the firmware. After working with Q-See Tech support for about a week, they were unable to help me get the FTP outgoing function and the Email alerts function not working. While not everyone will use these features, one would still expect they work. The result is that you cannot send a backup of video evidence to an FTP site in case for example your DVR gets taken in a burglary situation.
Also, it appears that the Device won't send alert emails. So, you will not be able to have the device send you email alerts to events such as suspicious motion, hard drive problems etc. I have their latest Firmware update and it does not solve this problem. They advanced me to their "Level 2" support but my feeling was they knew of this issue and put me on the run-around-loop. I even returned the first one, got a 2nd one and it does the exact same thing. If you don't need these features, all else seems to work fine.

Other Thoughts: Q-See is not a bad company. They do have someone available at their chat system from 11:00am (Eastern Time) until around 7:00pm Eastern time. But don't bother calling their tech support number. I have NEVER reached anyone on that number and have called many times and help for up to an hour.

But the two features I mentioned are broken. I would suggest you try those two functions immediately after purchase if you decide to buy one and need these features.

It seems they could fix this with a firmware update...but as of their March 2011 firmware update it's still broken.

As long as you don't need the 2 features I mentioned, it works well otherwise.

3 out of 5 eggsConsider this before purchase

Pros: All in all, this is a good deal on Video Surveillance. It is packed with features and can do a lot for the money. If you are looking for an economical DVR surveillance system, this is hard to beat.

Cons: HOWEVER....if you are going to use this system for REMOTE viewing consider this....
To set up remote viewing requires that the computer you use remotely to view your surveillance cameras will be considerably compromised and left open for hacking and malware due to the design of the software. Here specifically is what the software says you will need to do to your computer in order to view your cameras remotely....

This comes from their install guide. You must do ALL this to use their software according to their installation instructions.

Turn off pop-up blocker
Enable Active-X
Set ALL Active-X controls to Prompt or Enabled
Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid
Allow Active Content to run Files on my computer
If anti-virus programs are blocking Active-X, close or uninstall them
If you get unknown publisher or publisher can't be verified, Choose *Allow software that can't be verified or has unknown Publisher to run.*

Other Thoughts: I would have given a MUCH higher rating but remote Internet viewing was why I purchased this and now I find that using it will require a substantial risk to my computer's security.
It is a shame that this SECURITY product could not have included software that did not require letting down your computers defenses. perhaps Q-See could have had the software verified to help consumers avoid some of these pitfalls. Also, it only works with Windows...or MAC.....Seems they forgot one very important OS?

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent DVR for Home/ Small Business

Pros: Entire configuration completed via web browser

Cons: Only one full D1 port

Other Thoughts: Excellent DVR for home and small business. I switched to this unit from a GeoVision PC card that was very complex to setup. This unit requires some setup time, but has most all the features you will need.
