4 out of 5 eggsGood Entry Level Network Cam

Pros: *Good Video Quality
*IR Night Cam is decent
*Android App works reliably
*Camera Up time is pretty good!!
*Save pictures & clips from the camera to your phone. Neat!
*Hooks up to your home wifi with ease - no signal drops like other cameras

Cons: *Horrible Setup Process!!
*No Web Browser Support??

Other Thoughts: First, if you can get over the setup process the device works quite well. You have to connect to the device and then hope that the device prompts you to create an account. Otherwise, you'll never see the option to create an account and get this camera to work. Not a very intuitive interface or process. I've been remoting into this camera on my travels regularly and have been very impressed with its performance & up time. Good Entry Level Camera... worth a look.

*Where did all these Michael W & Michael P's come from? Being a Michael W myself, I find it quite amusing lol

4 out of 5 eggsBelkin NetCam F7D7602

Pros: The Belkin NetCam is a simple HD WiFi netcam that is designed around smartphone or tablet use, but is also accessible from a web browser. The box contains the netcam, power cord, mounting kit, and quick install guide. The camera is white plastic and rounded edges. Setup was easy using an Android Devices (Galaxy Tab 3) by installing the Belkin NetCam app, plugging in, setting a switch, connected to a WiFi signal, then launching the app to complete the setup and flipping the switch back. It took just a few minutes to be up and running.

The app is simple and I get about 8-10 fps over wifi at 1280x720 on default settings. While not a high frame rate, it is sufficient to see people walking or a car driving by. It has a one button push to capture a still image or record a video. The wide format picture and colors are of decent quality in the daytime. The audio is easy to turn on from the app to hear what is going on near the camera. The Belkin website is handy to view the camera from any web browser. The night camera IR is cool and works pretty well. It draws about 1.5-1.6 Watts idle/startup, 3.0-3.1 Watts running, and 4.5-4.6 Watts running with the IR mode with lights on.

Cons: On the Android app, it did not simply show up in my gallery and I did need to search for it in Belkin NetCam on the sdcard. The MP4 files are small, but appear to be less smooth and more pixelated than streaming. Don’t have the expectation to make smooth videos at high resolution, as mentioned in other reviews, thus this is probably not the camera that you want to use for a recording purpose. For simple live viewing it fares much better.

Other Thoughts: It isn’t clear what would happen if Belkin shutdown the service or stopped providing the app.

3 out of 5 eggsJust Average

Pros: This Net Cam from Belkin is a really streamlined unit. I like the simple setup (one power cable) and one button in the back. It has a nice weight and balance, and has no problem being set in various places and holding steady. The belkin netcam app works very well and provides a good method for viewing the camera images from anywhere.

Cons: You have to have an iPhone or Droid to setup this camera. Setup is relatively simple, but if you’re not familiar with your phone (ie setting up wireless, downloading apps, etc) you’ll struggle a bit getting it going. Once the app is installed and setup the camera you can login to belkin.com website and view the web camera’s stream on any computer – that’s when the problems begin.
Being forced to login to belkin.com to see your camera means that this camera offers 0% privacy. All images routes through belkin.com and back to you the viewer. This means anything recorded by these cameras will be available to belkin. It also means that if this line of devices gets very popular belkin will need to update their servers to keep up their quality of services. Typically increased server costs results in free services becoming subscription services.
The web interface itself is clunky. It has an updated video player that you can download, which I couldn’t get to work with chrome, firefox, or IE running under windows 8. The standard player works, after clicking through an irritating popup, and then selecting the correct camera. The feed times out after 10 minutes or so requiring you to login and click through the whole system again.
Reliance on belkin.com proprietary web interfaces and apps means that this net cam cannot be used with web-cam software like skype, or SIP clients like x-lite.
The camera itself is just okay. The image is sharp and wide. The colors are accurate and nice and sharp as long as you point it at good lighting. Any subject with a mild backlight goes immediately into shadow, and the backlight flares and causes color cast.

Other Thoughts: This net cam really only shines for those who want to view it via their iphone or droid. I personally tested on a droid based nexus 5 and had a flawless experience. However, due to privacy concerns, I would never own this camera. There are other solutions out there which don’t require you to connect to belkin.com proprietary and self-hosted system.

2 out of 5 eggsLets try finishing the product before selling it...

Pros: The setup was simple and straight forward, mostly, and requires little tech knowledge. The image quality was much better than I expected allowing me to see good detail.

I decided to set this up as a security camera for my office. It faces my door and work bench with a good viewing angle. Besides the generously long power cable it has good looks.

The infrared night vision works as expected.

Cons: First the DC jack on the device is on the top corner making it top heavy if not mounting on a wall. The next setup issue is configuration. YOU MUST USE A TABLET OR PHONE and connect to the camera's UNSECURED wifi network which provides a live feed. No PC or Mac, you must use a mobile device running their app. You can only create a netcam account while connected to the camera and after you configured it to connect to your wireless AP. This means that account creation goes from your phone, to the camera, then to the internet.

So after configuring the camera to my wireless AP and creating the account I was able to log into my account on my PC using a standard web browser. Sadly they do require that you download and install the iSecurity+ player plugin before viewing any video. This leads me into the next issue, REALLY SLOW FRAMERATES.

Using a 15/3Mbps connection I was able to muster 3-6fps. Granted 3Mbps upload isn't great but I was expecting a little better. I'm sure that it would have worked better if I was able to view the feed over the local LAN instead of having to send it out to the internet first. I couldn't find any documentation on this feature being available.

Actually there was no documentation, except for the piece of cardboard saying to download the app and put the device in setup mode.

Because this was a security camera I wanted it to e-mail me whenever it detected movement. This feature works well, except for the odd options it provides.

-Any Motion
-Lot of Motion
-Many Motion
-Large Motion
-Larger Motion

Maybe it's my autistic brain, but I can't make sense out of any of those except the first one. Are we talking a scale between an angry mob and Goliath? Thankfully the defaults work well and I didn't need to go guessing.

The last issue was an option to "Purchase Plan". Clicking this pointed me to a free trial of a beta program they have with caption

"Activate clips tab for trial for 'Office'" (Office is the name of my camera)

No that was not a typo on my part, it literally says that. I didn't feel like trying it out, doesn't seem like it would work anyway.

Also, it gets hot.

Other Thoughts: You really get the sense that this product is unfinished, that they rushed it out figuring they would finish things later.

I would only recommend this if the price was ~$60 because it does detect motion and has good optics. If they can get the rest of the features to work properly then I could see buying it at the MSRP.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat camera - decent software

Pros: The camera is incredibly simple to setup: you toggle a switch, connect via wifi, complete a few steps and you're done. It couldn't be easier. It comes with mounting screws for permanent wall mounting and the camera itself is extremely easy to position/reposition as desired.

The camera feed is a very respectable 720p and looks good in color -- although the colors are not as vivid as most might be accustomed too. In addition, the feed is usually not greater than 10 fps in my current setup (auto adjusted). Still, it is sufficient frames per second for the purposes of security and monitoring.

The IR feature is fantastic, but the LED lights are obvious and visible. Not a big deal, but worth noting. I find that the IR function makes this camera extremely functional since it offers a low light monitoring solution that is sufficiently bright.

The ability to hear audio is extremely helpful when monitoring kids or pets. Aside from hearing audio is the two-way audio where you can talk back through the camera's speaker. The quality of the audio is decent enough for my dog to understand my voice, which was unexpected, as he does not usually acknowledge my voice over smartphone.

Finally, the app makes it easy to monitor on smartphones no matter where you are but the really fun feature is taking pictures and recording those moments which save directly to your device. As a reviewer, there is a novelty to doing this, but I can definitely see the functionality of critical frame grabs in security/monitoring usage.

Overall, this is a very useful and versatile camera that is easy to setup and fun to use without being unreasonably priced.

Cons: The app is sometimes flakey and crashes every so often. In addition, the feed sometimes suffers from rubber banding -- in that the feed will pause and then advance quickly to catch up to live -- as if there is a streaming/buffering issue that has not been resolved. While this is to be expected in live streams, the frequency of occurrence is still greater than desirable. It occurs on wifi, LTE, and 4G streams with more than sufficient bandwidth. This is not unique to only the video feed, as talk back through the camera's speaker is sometimes choppy or doesn't come through at all. As a result, it seems there are some minor issues with the link that still need perfecting.

Other Thoughts: A firmware update was issued prior to receiving the device that appears to have resolved some early issues with feeds and streaming. It appears the performance has improved but some bugs still exist. I did not personally encounter any issues connecting to the device -- only with the rate of transmit which was on networks with sufficient bandwidth to not cause issues. I thought this was a 5-star product, but due to the issues bugs/imperfections with streaming and the app crashing, it was clear this is a good product that just needs a little more maturing to be great. Still, I enthusiastically recommend.

The only thing needed is a way to constantly record a feed similar to a surveillance system; however, this device is for monitoring and not necessarily for security and surveillance so this isn't a big deal, in my opinion.

1 out of 5 eggsDon't waste your money

Pros: Setup is pretty easy and works well. I should know since I've had to do it five times now.

Very small, light, compact camera.

Cons: Most of the time when I log on to the web interface to see the camera, I hit refresh and it eventually shows up but I then click on it to view the feed and after a few minutes of waiting, I'm told that I can't connect to it. Occasionally I am able to connect to it but after viewing for ten or fifteen minutes, the connection drops and the camera disappears and won't show back up until I go through setup again.

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this. My office is in a basement and I purchased this to put near a window on the 2nd floor so I could see what's going on outside. Since I'm unable to connect most of the time or I'm disconnected quickly after finally being able to connect, it's useless to me.
