Works well, a few minor issues
- Pros: Picture quality is surprisingly good for a 640x480 CMOS. Motion detection isn't perfect, but it works if you tweak it a little bit and understand it's totally based on video. Audio is acceptable but not wonderful.
The biggest Pros here are the motion detection FTP and email features; these work great and automatically send videos. MPEG4 is another plus, motion JPEG works, but isn't as compressed and doesn't seem to be as high quality.
- Cons: Wireless range isn't excellent; I have a very powerful wireless AP with a 12 dBi omnidirectional antenna and a 6 dBi directional antenna, and I had to reposition it so the camera could send video back at a decent bitrate (around 2 megabits is where it sits).
An important thing to note is that the latest .24 firmware breaks WPA/WPA2 support. Mine shipped with .24 and I had to downgrade back to .22 for it to work. A bit disappointing, but hopefully future firmware will fix this glaring problem. The linksys forums have the link to a custom built .22 (oddly enough with german language selected by default, but don't worry, all the menus are still english).
Motion detection isn't perfect, sometimes false positives will get annoying. I have sensitivity set all the way down and still get a few random videos of nothing going on.
- Other Thoughts: Just make sure you place this somewhere where you've got good wireless signal; if it's marginal for your laptop or a good wireless network card, it probably won't work well for the camera. The thing is sensitive to good wireless for good framerates and smooth video, and connection issues will drive you crazy if you aren't careful.
All the other settings work; and it seems stable.
Another thing that might be a plus is that it seems to run linux, linksys has the GPL'ed code on their website. Perhaps someone will pick this thing up and make a WRT54G-esque set of 3rd party firmware.
I'd give it 5 stars if it had a bit better wireless. I'm curious what's inside, and I would open it, but it's in use.
terrific product
- Pros: Pros? Well it works right out of the box!!! That is by far the easist tech experience I've had in a long time. The CD has a wizard and if you follow it, the thing just works like a champ. I was streaming VDO to my cell phone in literally minutes - it was amazing!! motion detection and email ability is solid too, again this thing just works. Some people have mentioned that it drops wireless connections but it hasn't for me. I let it run for about 12 hours without issue, however mostly I will run this thing wired. I love the video clips this thing sends when motion is detected (it can send jpg clips optionally) . Also google this camera and you'll find a way to attach to its undocumented URLs to get the last 5 pics taken (even if motion wasn't detected). I also like the ability to ceiling mount this or use its floor stand - makes me think about the possibilities of hiding this inside the shell of an old smoke detector.
- Cons: There are no instructions about port forwarding, but if you google it you will find the answers you need. Also it is hard-wired apparently to use TZO.com, but the wizard does guide you thru a 1-year free trial. Its blue LED light stays on and is BRIGHT so for a security purpose I needed to cover the light with black electrical tape.
- Other Thoughts: Well I bought this last week and now I see newegg selling a WVC5GCC model?? I hope the only difference is the silver color, no mention of this model at Linksys site. Oh, and it is possible to have multiple cameras using the same tzo.com account because this cam allows specification of port, so cool.

- Pros: None.
- Cons: The camera was never able to connect to any wireless network--regardless of security or encryption setup.
Good Camera
- Pros: For the price it can't be beat. I will agree with other reviews, you cannot expect this camera to work right out of the box. A good understanding of networking will be very helpful. I first tried it hardwired and once that worked I configured it wireless with wpa2 security no problem. Also using a free dns service, not the TZO that they give a free trial too...
- Cons: Audio behind the router is ok but over the internet it will only work with IE and it's very choppy due to the sampling rate. Don't really need audio anyway...
- Other Thoughts: I have set up the camera with a static IP instead od DHCP.
Router is a WRT54GL with DDWRT. Set up static IP associated with camera mac address in services of router. Never loose connection with camera. I will wait for a sale and buy another one of these camera's...
Technically challenged
- Pros: The picture quality is decent, 1 egg for that - it's why I bought them for the price. I was hoping to use them in a small business for general surveillance and very small (1 wall) retail product shelf.
- Cons: The application to control these camera is FULL OF DEFECTS! By career I am a SQA telecommunications engineer-I test core switch protocols and applications for a living. This is also my first review post - I just had to warn everyone-stay away!. I bought 2 cameras and initial setup was pretty easy - but a lot of things were not working correcty. Sometimes the cameras recorded with motion detection, sometimes not. Whenever you try to change ANY SETTINGS the bugs become apparent and I constantly would have a minor crash in windows after hitting save that brought up the 'send/dont sent error report to MS'. I heard some problems with DHCP, so I stayed with static settings...then I tried to change IP settings on one camera, but the application to monitor would still try to have somesort of connection with the old. It seems the application was a great source of the bugs. I also used a netgear router and found that I needed to get a linksys in order to use the remote viewing (DDNS).
- Other Thoughts: I wish I didn't destroy the packaging - I would return.
