3 out of 5 eggssoftware could be better

Pros: Good price for a 16 channel dvr.
Been running non stop for a couple of months now.
Packed with useful features.

Cons: When you view the monitor in 1 camera full screen mode it jumps back to montage/split screen every time there is a motion event. this becomes very annoying as there is constant motion.
Software is glitchy and crashes.
Software is hard to use.
The video history playback doesn't work for me.
I have to use the download feature, where you input a from and to date which downloads video in a format that can only be viewed by the CMS software.
The only way to output usable video as .avi from the history footage you must record it in realtime. this means if your video is one hour long and wish to convert to avi you must let it record the footage for 1 hour. And you also have to hit stop otherwise it will keep recording.

Other Thoughts: Its a good DVR, and great for live playback The software wasn't thought out that much, and really makes it hard on you if you want to gather video from the history to email someone.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Value

Pros: Handles a large amount of cameras.

Allows you up to 2 1 TB hard drives.

Doesn't run too hot.

Has 4 different quality settings to let you get either the best picture or go longer before overwriting previously recorded footage.

It has a digital zoom that doesn't distort the picture too much.

My favorite features are the Mobile viewing (java or .mp4 based) so you can check on specific cameras on your smart phone and the two year warranty.

Cons: One crash when saving .h264 file to pc. I was remote viewing on my laptop on the LAN. I restarted the program and attempted to save again and it worked fine. We had a previous dvr (from another company) that lasted 3.5 years before dying. Lets see if this one will last longer.

Other Thoughts: To the user with the software issues:

The remote viewing software in Internet Explorer isn't your only option.

If you take the CD that was included with the DVR and install it, it put the Camera Management Software on your pc.

It isn't the best software I've ever seen, but it is a lot better than doing playback in an IE window.

Also, you can set up each camera to only record when it senses motion. I was unable to use that feature (though I did try it out and it worked perfectly) as we needed 24/7 footage, but it might help you out with your searches.

2 out of 5 eggsGood idea, horrible software!

Pros: Good quality, many hardware features, easy to set up, worked with my existing 12 (assorted) cameras out of the box. Took less than 2 minutes to install 2X 1-GB hard drives. Overall: hardware 5/5...

Cons: ...but the software RUINS this product.

To begin with, the the remote viewer works ONLY in Internet Explorer. Fine, this we can deal with.

Biggest problem? NO TIME-LINE SEARCH. Our previous DVR had a nice clear hour-by-hour display, with all motion-detect activity marked, so it was easy to click on any hour *when something happened* and review the video. Not so with this unit - you're flying blind, and have to input the the exact time you want to review. Huge waste of time, completely unacceptable in a fast-paced security environment.

Fast-forward & rewind works only up to 2X - even though it displays "8x", the time counter tells a different story. Several times, crashed & rebooted entire unit upon doing a time-search. Video overlay had problems. Et cetera, et cetera...

Overall, a solid hardware platform completely destroyed by stone-age software.

Other Thoughts: If you need to review the video only on rare occasions, this system is pretty OK.

However, if you need to monitor an active environment, and look up events several times/day - the lack of time-line search + slow FF/REW + random crashes - make this unit completely unacceptable.

A+ for hardware, F for software.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Product!

Pros: This product works great! Price was the lowest I could find for H.264 and except for having to install my own SATA hard drive, which I ordered together with the DVR system on Newegg, this surveillance box couldn't have been easier to open, plug in the harddrive, plug in cameras, monitor and turn on.

Cons: Doesn't come with a hard drive so you have to purchase a sata HD and install it but it's pretty simple and the surveillance box comes with SATA cables too!

Other Thoughts: I built my own surveillance DVR PC box initially and used it for nearly two years before it started to faulter but for the ease of use and convenience, I'd highly recommend purchasing Aposonic ready to go out of the box DVR solution systems!
