5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Better than expected. The DVR just works. The recording quality is as good as NTSC allows. It will do 720x480 at 30 fps. The motion sensing is easy to set up. In normal recording mode at normal compression it looks like it will hold a month's worth of constant recording with 4 cameras after playing with it for a day and a half. Up to 4 users can log in and work separate sessions over the network. The DVR uses convection cooling. It is moderate warm, but not hot. There is no noise. You can feel a slight vibration from the disk. More later....

Cons: Not really a con, but there is no on/off switch. Also if you connect a monitor to the VGA the DVR will only output vid to the monitor when it first boots. If you disconnect and reconnect the VGA monitor you get no output and have to reboot if you want to use it. And contrary to the specs, the output does go to 1280x768. The two video outputs work without the VGA. The mouse I used would only work on the USB on the front, not the back.

Other Thoughts: I did not test the mail system, or the recording mode of events only. In normal recording mode, if there is a motion sensing event and click on that event, the playback starts ten seconds before the event - nice. The events are simply a list with time pointers into the video. I did not test file export or snapshots.

The DVR is obviously running some stripped down form of Linux in firmware. I did a port scan and the only response was on the server at port 80 - no telnet or ftp was present.

When you connect with a browser, you get a simple text menu that give you a choice of downloading very small .exe files that can capture or show a remote desktop. These work in wine under Linux, but do not allow resizing without taking over the display - a programming problem. Maybe the Windows software on the CD that I did not try is better. Other selections had javascript pages for jpg downloads without software, including one to hammer the DVR for jpgs of a camera to simulate streaming

2 out of 5 eggsNot For Me

Pros: Cheap. Easy to set up. Got a combo set and the cameras work pretty well. The computer interface works but is clumsy. The cameras worked quite well in the dark.

Cons: The documentation is pathetic. The paper installation guide only describes the buttons & plugs. The manual on the CD doesn't show much more than that. I had to guess at a lot. That cost an egg.

The recording feature is beyond clumsy. I have several sessions recorded and can't figure out how to move between them. That cost an egg.

The scheduler appears to work, but I have a session from a time that I didn't manually record or have scheduled to record. That cost an egg.

I absolutely could not figure out how to transfer anything through the USB port - like to a flash or external drive.

I had to turn the unit on, then plug the monitor into it before it would boot up. What's up with that?

Other Thoughts: Pity. It looked promising with enough features to satisfy a simple installation. Since I spent several hours on what should have been several minutes and I'm still not exactly sure how it works, I'm going to return it and look for something else.
