5 out of 5 eggsLion-4500

Pros: Easy setup, Good phone support, Good Features, Independent Camera adjustments, several android apps. to watch live.

Cons: Included cameras are just o.k., The main features of the DVR have to be accessed on the DVR tv/monitor. You cannot access all functions of the DVR from your Computer. An Android APP to control playback of DVR would be great. You can only view live images from your phone, but there is less than 2 second delay from real time tophone.

Other Thoughts: Upgrade to the s420-245a cameras (they have sony ccd), The picture quality is much better, as is the Night vision distance.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price, but..

Pros: Cheap price, small cams, very stable DVR. The remote viewing application is very nice through the internet even in low bandwidth. DVR have a self-reboot schedule.

Cons: You need at TV at first for configs. Emails alerts are not working and no other firmware is out. One camera is flickering few times a day, triggering the motion recording for no reasons. Had to download a third party application to view cameras on Android.

Other Thoughts: Quality is perfect in daytime, but nightime the 30ft is a longshot. At night the LEDs are glowing in the dark like a big red eye.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks like a charm

Pros: Excellent picture quality. Easy set-up. Low cost. Well written manual. Great remote viewing interface.

Cons: None yet other than it supports a lot of smart phone, but not Android. The manual says there's a download on their site, but it's not there.

Other Thoughts: We had a 2 year old other brand 4 ch. DVR that was having interference problems within the 4 ch. video card which the system detected as motion so it was almost always recording. So I bought a Night Owl Lion that is about 1/3rd the price of the other brand 4 ch. DVR. As with any DVR behind a router or firewall you will need some IT support if you don't know how to manage your router or find your IP, Gateway, set-up Port Forwarding etc. You'll need to know what type of IP you have from your ISP, and the Night Owl manual is very well written for all situations. (oh, and if you happen to hit “reset” in the remote viewing interface it will nuke your password and you can’t get in. There’s no documentation about what to do, but I rebooted and it came up with the original PW I set-up)

4 out of 5 eggsDecent home/small business solution

Pros: - Quick and easy configuration
- Decent video quality
- Decent DVR options, such as motion detection areas and scheduling.
- Motion detection works surprisingly well
- Web access*1

Cons: - On-screen GUI is not super intuitive
-*1 Web access was troublesome to access at first (IE security must have it added to trusted sites and security for that zone set to low in order for it to work)
- Somewhat short cables included - we used existing camera cable in the building and spliced the connectors.
- No VGA output - composite only

Other Thoughts: Though I note a fair amount of cons, the system is a decent solution when setup properly. We use this in a commercial location that needed a basic solution - this fit the bill and is working fine.

Important note: Set the DVR to reboot itself daily at a safe time. You can only do this with the on screen GUI, and not via the web interface.

1 out of 5 eggsGlad I didn't pay full price. Hope I can return it!

Pros: The cameras feel solid and the bases look like they might hold them up.

Cons: The box feels very cheap.
There is no way to set it up without having a TV. What?
Tech support is so bad it isn't funny - I asked questions and they read in the user guide to give me responses. No responses that were not straight from the manual.
The Internet interface does not allow for proper configuration of the unit.
The box is supposedly Linux but tech support can not give a way to get to a text interface with it. I assume (probably erroneously) that if I could get a shell prompt I could configure this properly.
My assumption was probably in error because the web interface was obviously not programmed by someone who understands English well. In fact, it feels as if it were programmed by someone who has little to no understanding of English and who used some cheap online translation tools to come up with menus.
The BNC connectors and cables and mains cables are anergonomically thin (cheesy looking and feeling). Sure, the DVR only uses 12 W (plus the HD. What?) but no mo

Other Thoughts: re space to write in the cons box :)
I find it odd, really. I mean, sure, I know that I'm picky, and all, but this was the highest rated system for the price. The highest rated system I could find anywhere - doing a ridiculous amount of research. What it all comes down to, I guess, is that other people must go into purchases with low expectations, or something. I want something that will work! I'm astonished, in this day and age, that this is the best that we can do. In fact, I'm quite positive that for the price this is nowhere near the best we can do - it's not even "average"! It's appalling! And it's missing the simplest of things! It doesn't matter that you can get to it from an iPhone if the interface you can get to doesn't make sense and doesn't have any help in it! At least I go out in the field and see my users and see what issues they have and then get fixes and clarifications into our tools. That is so not the case here it isn't funny. 3 out of 5 eggsMeh, Decent

Pros: Well Priced, Good quality video, everything needed to set it up is in the box.

Cons: The computer based setup doesn't support all the features accessible via the TV output. To elaborate, From the computer setup you are only able to access network, video, and users from the computer software. Also as of writing this the software does not support the ability to change any of the network settings from a computer.

Other Thoughts: In short, this is a very nice camera system for the price, however if you do not have a TV where the system will be installed, as I did not. Be sure to set it up at home or someplace where you do. Make sure you edit and make note of all settings, because you will not be able to make any change over the network once they are set.
