3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I installed this in my friends business since it was the cheapest we can find. I added two more cameras for a total of 10.

Cons: Some of the Siames cables that shipped in the bundle were defective. NightOwl support is terrible. They don't even pick up the phone and promise call backs. They fail to respond to email questions and if they do it's like they didn't even read it. They really need to get better documentation and support.

Other Thoughts: For a system like this you will need more than a 500GB drive. I believe this only supports up to 1TB drive, but I hope I'm wrong.

2 out of 5 eggsHow to focus the cameras

Pros: See 'Other Thoughts' for instructions on focusing the camera.

Cons: See 'Other Thoughts' for instructions on focusing the camera.

Other Thoughts: Carrollights indicated that the cameras can be focused. This will void the warranty but it can be done.

1) Take off the shade by sliding it do the front of the camera until it falls off.

2) Peel the sticker covering the seam.

3) grab the base and the ring and "twist" counter-clockwise very slightly until you feel a click.

4) work the ring off.

5) Pull the rubber ring around the lens off.

6) Rotate the lens to focus.

7) Re-assemble by following steps 5 through 1 in reverse order. Be sure the rubber ring is in place when you close the camera.

Be sure not to keep it disassembled for too long or you will have to completely disassemble the camera to replace the dessicant silica gel pack. That pack keeps the lens from fogging in wet weather.

1 out of 5 eggsproblems and no help

Pros: was attracted to price but.....

Cons: They say you get what you pay for. Well in this case you do not even get 10% of what you pay for. Bought this system and it started rebooting by itself one week after i got it from new egg. That was in August,2010. Since then several attampt shave been made to the manufacturer but have not received replacement parts yet nor the problem has been resolved. Absolutely hopeless people to deal with. I would never buy this system again and absolutely DO NOT recommend it to any one unless you want to throw away youe $700 dollars. You might as well donate that money to a charity it will be put to beter use then these thugs.

Other Thoughts: Also tried to contact New Egg officials but nothing has been resolved. I am not sure what thye can do since it more then "30" days.

4 out of 5 eggsThe spec is good

Pros: I just bought this item. I will update the review. For now, from the spec, I like the fact that it has 8 cams, long cables, Linux OS (which can be mod easily).

Cons: It would be nice if they have a small LCD for it. However cost may be a factor, so it's a minor at this point. More importantly:
1) Power backup. If they use a cheap laptop spec to build it, at least, it can withstand electrical power outage. That one of very important factor security.
2) WIFI. The device may needs to be in a locked room, or hidden away, where ethernet is not available. At least, they should sell a compatible USB adapter with drivers for WIFI

Other Thoughts: The spec should indicate what's the electrical power usage is since it runs all day. Also, operating temperature is very important.

4 out of 5 eggsBought 3 Night Owl CCTV Systems

Pros: Easy Set-Up, Hot Swappable Hard Drive (16 chnl only) easy playback/download of videos via Netviewer Software or via Web still using Netviewer. Cameras are better than I expected for the price
converts .264 file to AVI on the fly, so you can watch the downloaded file on many applications like MS Media Player. Motion Detection is easily adjusted for sensitivity,
the quality of .264 video is far better than I expected,
60ft of cabling is included and I have ordered an extension cable which made it 120ft with no video degrade, if you have a DSL with a dynamic IP and want internet access your system anywhere it supports DDNS (Dynamic DNS) goto for more information,

Cons: Netviewer software can lock up if you task it to hard, otherwords clicking a video to watch and then clicking another video to watch then clicking another video to watch.
You might have to focus the lens on the cameras. but you might want to call support before doing this. I had to adjust 4 cameras focus and I just did it, I don't think it would void the warranty, but call support if your not sure,
I want to use the SmartPhone software, but I have a BlackBerry and I was told when version 6 comes out for BB it should be fine, NightOwl is working with v6 for BB

Other Thoughts: Playback software needs updated or fixed, but...I haven't used it that much, I use netviewer to review videos
run netviewer from the included CD, don't use your web browser. its just easier that way.
I have installed 3 of these systems
1-4 channel
1-8 channel
1-16 channel
I have had no issues with these systems
would I purchase these again, Yes

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for the price.

Pros: Great picture quality, solid cameras (metal), WEB interface and PC Console nice and functional, easy setup.

Cons: Remote is cheap and has to be pointed at the DVR to work, DVR has a cheap feel but is covered by faceplates, DVR interface is cumbersome.

Other Thoughts: For the money I was surprised at the quality of the picture and recordings. Very clear and the cameras feel solid to boot. Although you can setup the Alarm zones for the cameras via the console, it does not show video so even a snapshot so you are blind. Passwords are weak, can be up to six charocters. Would like to see that improved and possibly the ability to add more users with custom veiws. Just a wish.
The Camera mounts can be cumbersome. All in all a nice investment so far.
