5 out of 5 eggsOutstanding Kit for Beginners

Pros: - Stone simple setup - all you need to provide is round-crown staples and a staplegun to tack up the lines, and a screwdriver with phillips head and drill drivers
- IR feature is very effective for close to medium range
- Mobile and Web setup is a snap for more tech-savvy users (I work in IT professionally so port forwarding is no stranger to me); I've heard that their tech support is great for getting you up and running if you're less than a computer nerd
- Configuration menus are relatively easy to navigate and only slightly succumb to translation mishaps
- PLENTY of space on the provided 500GB hard drive
- Easily upgradeable to 2TB with a screwdriver and basic computer knowledge
- Resolution is perfect for home/apartment surveillance or a small office environment
- PTZ compatibility gives this DVR awesome upgradeability for when a camera dies or needs to be replaced with a nicer one

Cons: - Sometimes has trouble reading the hard drive - nothing that hasn't been resolved by a reboot (or three...)
- The resolution could be a touch nicer...but I got this at a phenominal financial deal so I'm not inclined to complain
- The cabling they provide is just a little bit on the cheap side, although I have had no problems whatsoever, it just feels a little bit flimsy though it works great
- Periodically the signal from one of the cameras picks up some interference, gives it horizontal, scrolling lines
- Relatively narrow viewing angle

Other Thoughts: I wanted to put a camera system up at my apartment to help keep my daughter and firearms better protected, and this kit is absolutely a perfect fit. The added confidence of knowing my home is being watched 24/7, and for such an outstanding price, is a wonderful feeling. I keep the camera feeds up while at the office (I work in IT professionally) and the network traffic has not yet affected the unit as far as I can tell.

For a relatively small space, the resolution is wonderful, and more than enough to identify who's in front of the camera, even with them mounted in the farthest corners of the apartment or office. In a larger setting like a warehouse or big office, a more expensive, higher-quality setup may be more fitting, especially since this set is limited to four cameras.

5 out of 5 eggsnice product easy setup.

Pros: great tech support on phone. easy setup of cameras.interface software ok my 2 customers at this residence are both over 75 yrs old and they can view the playback and record functions and use them as they want.i will definitely install these for residential customers that want an entry level system.
bought on sale for 199.99 newegg rocks! works great with iPad asee app.

Cons: Cameras don't see that well in the dark, but you get what you pay for and for the 200.00 i paid I'm very pleased.main con price is back up to 269.00 with shipping and everything. had to update firmware for ie 9 to work

Other Thoughts: I will definitely buy more of the night owl dvr set ups but i will go with better cameras for facial recognition.need the 70 ir led cams.

3 out of 5 eggsNot what I was hoping for

Pros: Price, Easy to set-up

Cons: Poor focus, fixed focus, narrow field of view for my needs

Other Thoughts: First let me say that I am using this in a non-standard way. I purchased this mainly for the video multiplexing capabilities to record and display an educational event. At 8' distance the image is very much out of focus and I cannot adjust it. At a height of 4' I wanted to capture a 4'x8' area but these cameras are unable to do that.
On the positive side, this is an inexpensive system that is easy to setup and use. It should be good for it's intended purpose of DIY home surveillance.

1 out of 5 eggstrash+can

Pros: the price.

Cons: connecting to the net/phone
anything like that
Instructions are garbage
- I have no idea how to set bridge mode on and it doesn't tell u how, among many other missing instructions
go with one of the other 3 systems.

Other Thoughts: turn and key , YEAH RIGHT
super difficult to get it to work with your router/ connect via the internet, wish I would of brought another system
trashin this one.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Product

Pros: 10 months recording capacity at high quality setting, decent quality picture, easy setup, plenty of advanced features, all for very good price compared to other systems.

Cons: included cables could be longer. I had to buy extensions to wire the cameras on my garage.

Other Thoughts: I installed this system after my old analog system with VHS recorder died. The quality is much better, recording time capacity is much longer, visibility in the dark is way superior. Yet this system cost me less than half of what I paid for the old one. It has all the advanced networking features, can stream to your phone or computer at work, has intelligent motion detection. The setup was really easy and intuitive to me. It's definitely a good product for private use. Maybe some commercial systems are superior, but for the price this is definitely a very good pick.
