5 out of 5 eggsDoes the job

Pros: Works as advertised. It says in the description that it does not come with an hdd, so don't expect one.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have gone through 4 different DVR's including Zmodo and Microcenters WinBook brand, which is by far the worst piece of hardware and has even worse firmware. This DVR was easy to set up, easy to figure out and works like a charm. For $100, you can't beat it.

2 out of 5 eggs<< PULSATING RECORDED VIDEO >>

Pros: Good Idea. Pretty Simple.

Cons: Recorded video 'pulsates' (in focus, out of focus) about every second. Setting for lower quality recording (less resolution) seems to help a bit but I think it simply hides this behavior somewhat. This is happening on all newer models (Apollo, Poseidon, Zeus models). Have now RMA'd 6 Apollo and 11 Poseidon units but each replacement unit exhibits the same behavior. Night Owl Tech support has now FINALLY decided to take a look and see what 'that crazy guy' (me) keeps calling about. They have also FINALLY admitted there is a problem with each of these models and are FINALLY addressing it with their engineering / product development teams. My first call about this problem was in 09/2011 and just this week (7/5/2012) they're finally looking into it. We'll see how it goes. (Will post back if/when problem is resolved with any or all of these Night Owl models.)

Other Thoughts: Am a reseller and installer of all shapes and sizes of video surveillance / security systems. Have never experienced an issue like this before. I took several samples of the recorded video to both, city and county police and both said it looked 'suspicious' or like it's 'been tampered with in some way' and would hesitate to use it for evidence. I do think Night Owl really is looking into the issue as they are now starting to call me (completely new behavior from them) and have me try different settings and letting me know what steps are being taken to try and resolve the problem. Will post back as things change.

1 out of 5 eggsWill Fail You When You Need It

Pros: Was cheap, Records video, pretty good quality video

Cons: After a while unit becomes unable to accurately locate recordings. I was looking for a recording from April and it was playing recording from June, July may seemingly at random. DVRs are cool just to have, but when they really earn their board is when you need to reference a specific date and time and you can see exactly what happened. That's the whole point of this unit and that's where it failed. Hence the title of my review.

Other Thoughts: PC software is also extremely buggy. Look thrown together. Updates have not fixed obvious issues. Will not buy another night owl product or anyone that looks similar. I'm going PC based, I'll build it myself.

4 out of 5 eggsDecent Little Unit

Pros: Excellent Live video monitoring quality, Unit is generally easy to integrate into existing infrastructure, Once its setup it is rock solid. Customer Service seems knowledgable. I Have called them once with a question and they did their best to try and help. I use the remote viewing daily at work with zero complaints-

Cons: My unit 'pulsates' on all channels during playback, (on all quality settings) Not a deal breaker, But none the less it is an annoyance. - Forget interfacing unit with and iOS Device..

Other Thoughts: User manual Isnt half bad, I've seen way worse Chinese to engrish translations.. manual is easy to follow

1 out of 5 eggsDon't Rely on Night Owl's Warranty

Pros: Have same unit, bought as a package, with Hd installed. Unit has lived up to my expectations as far as DVR goes.

Cons: Factory Installed HD quit after less than a month. Called Night Owl for a replacement, hoping to keep unit and just simply swap out the bad drive. I was informed, that since I opened the unit (as it had already quit) and replaced the HD myself with another unit to get the DVR back in service that the warranty was void. Needless to say I wasn't happy. NEVER buy anything else with Night Owl brand as result. Had I not had the bad support experience, would have rated HIGH.

4 out of 5 eggsNice DVR for the money

Pros: Very happy with the amount of features and the D1 recording resolution. Set up was easy and their customer/ technical support is outstanding. They guided me though any setup issues I had relating to network viewing etc. Installing of the Hard drive was a breeze. Hard drive does resonate slightly in the enclosure. Not loud but was made completely silent with a couple of thin pieces of self adhesive insulating foam at the mounting points. Sound quality is good.

Cons: Would like to have a headphone jack for sound playback but is not really an issue as long as you play back through the LAN network application on your computer. Plays through your computer speakers. The sound output RCA jacks are kinda obsolite for my set up. You need to plug into a A/V amp or similar to use those.

Other Thoughts: Happy with it so far. Works well, easy to set up and was pleasantly surprised with the quallity of the customer/tech support. 24/7 to boot.

4 out of 5 eggsEasy security

Pros: Unit is a good size. Easy to setup

Cons: Slight hum. When recording you can hear the hard drive spin. Might need to look for a better HD

Other Thoughts: To bad night owl does not have matching wireless cameras.
