2 out of 5 eggsSoftware bugs limit usefulness.

Pros: Price. The kit has mostly what I needed to install it except for some screw hardware that I needed for my particular installation.
I was able to set up the system to email when a motion event happened. The mail goes out very quickly, which is a plus.
I can view my system remotely on my iPhone using the Zviewer app. Another app called APlayer also works, but you can only view live video. I wish you could review motion events remotely on the iPhone.

Cons: Software is faulty.

When I query the unit using ActiveX/IE client or NVMS for motion event videos, the query fails. It used to fail only on Chan 1, but now it does on Chan 2. (I'm using only 2 cameras).

When I try to download the videos using ActiveX/IE client, it acts as if it is doing something, but really nothing happens. Similar problems with NVMS software. NVMS has stopped working completely.

I cannot download videos directly to a USB stick. Upon insertion the system freezes up.

The system has many false positive motion events during sunrise and sunset using outside cameras.

The system was initially configured to record only motion events. It has started recording continuously all on its own.

I don't recommend this system unless they can make it work correctly, or if all you need is to be able to view live video and get snapshots mailed to you of motion events (but then why do you need a hard drive at all then?)

Other Thoughts: Look for some other product.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We appreciate your feedback about Zmodo products and service. I believe that there is some simple troubleshooting tips that our technical support staff could help you with.

On Internet Explorer you need to right click and select “run as administrator” to access the playback and also for the downloading issues.

The flash drive needs to not have an LED light on it, it will require too much power and will not be detected by the DVR.

The motion detection can be set off by shadows if the sensitivity is too high, so lowering that and/or adjusting the detection area can help.

I encourage you to contact us so we can work directly with you to make Zmodo products right for you. You may call us at 866-551-6881 extension 8117 or email support@zmodo.com.

Best Regards,
Zmodo Sales and Support

4 out of 5 eggsUpDate

Pros: Fairly simple to setup. Avg camera quality compared with others in price category

Cons: Tech support is available through email. To my surprise there was a knowledgeable person responding and the updates and other settings required were quickly addressed. So I have revised my rating.

Other Thoughts: Update to latest driver, even if you aren't running windows 8.

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: The price

Cons: very poor quality cameras, directions might as well be written in Chinese, not worth the trouble of installing, will be returning. Do yourself a favor and buy something better...The old saying...you get what you pay for applies to this. And unlike zmodos reply to another disappointed buyer, it is NOT a 2 year warranty. It's a one year limited, although they don't say what the limitations are, and a 7 day return policy.

Other Thoughts: To give you an idea how bad they are, with the packing list they suggest going to YouTube to view their videos. I watched part 1 of 7....and that's all there was. They apparently never made the other 6 videos.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsnot bad if on sale

Pros: price if on sale, around $160

Cons: All the cons I have are not really cons with this (sale) price system. Cams could be a little better. Night vision could be a little less grainy. Prob. just me but the wires need to be labeled for cam end and HD end. See below

Other Thoughts: This is my reason for review, and hopes someone won't make the bonehead move I did. I looked at the wires and they looked the same to me so I ran them from where the HD was going to cam mounting positions through walls and up through the attic. When I mounted the first cam I went to plug in the wire and yep, the connection will only go 1 way. Out of all 4 wires you would think I would get at least 1 right but NO lol. It was painful, but all 4 had to be rerouted. So make sure you are running them the right way!

If you use motion detection you will really have to play with settings to keep a LOT of false hits. One thing I had was a/c vents would barely move shades or blinds . Traffic outside would make sun glare and shadows that would trip it. Other times it would go off and I have looked and looked at reviews and can't find anything at all. There are settings and black out regions to eliminate these false captures but I have not tried any. I record 24/7. I get 3 days before data write over with the 500gb drive and record quality on high.

2 out of 5 eggslow price but won't last long

Pros: Low price and the hardware is easy to set up.

Cons: The system worked for last than a year before the DVR died suddenly without any reason. I have always used surge protector and there was nothing unusual the days around it died. I tried tech support but it's no help at all. If you buy one, don't expect it to last forever or a year.

Other Thoughts: I finally bought a cheap USB video hookup and connect the cameras to an extra laptop.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

First let us apologize for your negative experience with Zmodo. Zmodo products have a 2 year warranty when bought on newegg and we always recommend our customers to work directly with us to create a RMA for a replacement product. There is a chance that the DVR didn’t die on you, but the hard drive inside did. The hard drive can easily be replaced and have your DVR back up and running.

We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to help resolve this issue with you and improve your Zmodo experience. Please contact us at 866-551-6881 or support@zmodo.com and our tech support will be able to help you troubleshoot your issue.

Best Regards,
Zmodo Sales and Support

5 out of 5 eggsGreat bang for your buck

Pros: DDNS capable and 3G mobile access.
Picture quality is much better than I expected.
Motion activated recording does exactly that, with added sensitivity settings for individual cameras; works great with pets.
Global settings can be adjusted easily with built-in mouse or remotely through browser session.
Settings menus, saves, and reboots are snappy and responsive for what I expected to be an inferior system.

Cons: Night vision viewing is effective for my purposes, but only slightly better than a baby monitor.
Do not like drilling 1/2" to 5/8" holes for the BNC connectors to fit through going through the attic/walls; size increases to 7/8" or 1" for the aggregate holes leading to the dvr unit if you are hiding it.

Other Thoughts: Hidden in my home for motion activated recording (break-ins, perps, etc.)
Make sure you allow activeX controls for dvr through IE.
If using 3G access, make sure you follow online instructional videos to setup port forwarding or free ddns services online; being a network engineer helps as these are very similar to setting up PoE cameras.
Make sure you know how to change out a hard drive, because these things do not last forever: 3-6 yrs max.

4 out of 5 eggsSab

Pros: Price. Video quality is good. I have nothing to compare it to since this is my first kit.

Cons: Didn't know you had to push "0" (zero) on the remote control to "unlock" the dvr's functionality. Didn't see it anywhere in the manual which is an english translation from chinese it seems.

Other Thoughts: Didn't know you had to push "0" (zero) on the remote control to "unlock" the dvr's functionality.

So I recant my previous review of this camera system

2 out of 5 eggsHappy Disappointment

Pros: Price. Video works. Easy to setup.

Cons: DVR doesnt work. Remote doesnt work. No response from pushing buttons on the DVR.

Other Thoughts: Email zmodo customer service about the non-responsiveness of DVR unit at 6pm-ish on 3-23-2012 and no response. I'm about to start the RMA process and soon as I submit this review.

5 out of 5 eggsGood cameras good price at 170

Pros: Easy setup and networking capabilities are nice

Cons: Viewing angle is very wide and the directions are pretty bad

Other Thoughts: Using for office to keep track of who is coming and going, so viewing angle isnt huge problem and works well for what I need. You arent puchasing a casino grade system, so dont expect one.

5 out of 5 eggsBetter than expected

Pros: Lots of features for the price! (didn't get it on sale but still very happy!!)
Includes drive and all hardware to start recording immediately.
Good daytime image quality.
Quick export to USB drive (tested thumb and hard drive).
Small form factor (easy to hide)
Privacy views (blur out specific sections of picture for each camera)
Remote phone viewing (tested on android phone using IP Cam basic and lite)
Remote admin features (playback, record, scan, upload, and system controls.)
Remote viewing through browser (DVR settings and control are available when viewing through browser and you can upload to remote computer)
Multi user setup with passwords
Audible for motion alerts (set it to buzz when motion is detected in specified section of view)
Easy to install
Adjustable record segments (Recorded files can be adjusted to 5,10,15,30,60 minute size/interval)
Audio input connections.
Easy export to USB device
Quick format of USB drive or new hard drive
PTZ options for dome cam

Cons: IR light affects colors - As other posters have said, some colors are not accurate. After doing some research I've found that this is related to the IR LED's in the camera itself.
Narrow view - The view is much more narrow than I expected (~ 40 - 45 degree viewing range)
Manual could have been written better.
Navigation could be better (As JM stated there is no reverse but this is not a deal breaker)
Night vision could be better (bought IR flood light which helped)

Other Thoughts: Very pleased with this package even though I didn't get it on sale! Has almost all of the features that you would get from the more expensive units/packages and includes a good size drive. Recording at the default settings yields about 6 months worth of recording. Setting things up for remote viewing was straight forward and there were several resources online to walk you through the process. Pay special attention to the port forwarding instructions as it will be tricky for those who are not tech savvy.
IP Cam on the Android market works great and had the actual hardware name as a selection for configuration. Test the cameras and plan out the location of the cameras and preview before installing the camera base since the viewing angle may be more narrow than you would expect. Solved the internet explorer limitation using remote desktop to computer within my home network. Buy the 8 camera kit if you have extra money! Search YouTube for Zmodo videos for installation help ;-)
