5 out of 5 eggsHDD not formatted errors

Pros: Price, all cables and parts included, DVR has lots of support options

Cons: HDD format error report that freezes the DVR

Other Thoughts: **** HDD not formatted ****
Purchased the KHI8-YARUZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264, 960H DVR with 4 cameras and no HDD. The DVR itself is a DX-SIN8 for the user manuals and WEB searches. This is my first use of a security recording system.
The Zmodo system packaging was very nice. Setup instructions are a very quick guide so for me the experiments and learning curve were fun and interesting. The system seems to have a lot of customization available; display brightness, color saturation. Internal buzzer alarm, external alarm N/O relay points. Mask for motion detection. Alarm schedule. Recording schedule.
It is an analog system so the zoom display looks like those police security camera pictures, “Do you recognize this person?” and they show some shadowy picture. You’d think stores and banks would go for better systems. If you want to have a detailed zoom you need a digital system $$$. The basic display and recording look crisp.
My only problem has been with the HDD recording. Initially I install a used Seagate 800gb drive; did a low level format with it in the PC and then installed and did a successful format in the Zmodo. A couple of times a day it would report that the drive needed to be formatted, just powering the system off and on would clear that problem with no loss of recording (except for the time when the error occurred until I noticed it). So after a WEB search, I purchased a 300 GB Seagate “Pipeline” HDD. Seagate pipeline and WD purple seem to be security DVR drives. That didn’t fix my problem.
Called NewEgg support and they would have exchanged the DVR with no problem. Since the WEB search found a number of similar problems I didn’t think a replacement would be any different? NewEgg gave me a manufacture’s contact number. Zmodo support was also very pleasant and willing to exchange. It seems that the DVR might be affected by AC line supply power. Some of the suggestions are to NOT plug it into an UPS or surge protector. Strange to have a security system not on an UPS?
I could reproduce the not formatted problem if I used the DVR internal buzzer alarm. Set the motion detection sensitivity at highest and buzzer duration for 10 seconds. This might be due to my installation of the hard drive? SATA cable routing (?) maybe the buzzer injects electrical noise into the SATA cable? I put a LED battery lamp on the DVR external alarm relay and haven’t had a problem since.

5 out of 5 eggsTremendous Value!!!

Pros: Great DVR, Software, Connectivity and 24/7 Support. Decent Cams for the money.

Cons: One little weird setup item can cause problems if you don't read the documentation carefully. 'IP Access' under Network Settings s/b 'Disabled' to allow access via LAN Computers (When off any PC can access.) This setting not being what it looks like on cursory inspection has caused users considerable hair pulling and head banging. I've lost several hours time myself over this, what I consider to be a misnomer.

OK - the night vision isn't great. But come on - You're not paying $1G. I get my infrared from more expensive Rosewill RSCM-12003 (70 IR IP) Cams. These provide different angles on the same lit area.

Other Thoughts: For the money you can't beat Zmodo. If tech support is unavailable you can get Chat Support. It is very good and their people are knowledgeable.

Go ahead and try the competition but at least stay away from Swann. Swann is a complete scam organization. Their products are inferior, packaging and specs fraudulently describe contents incorrectly and there is absolutely no support. I've hung on the phone for hours and they don't reply to emails either. NOTE: This paragraph applies not to Zmodo but to one of their competitors, Swann, that has given me nothing but grief for my wasted money.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware !!! The worst Customer Service

Pros: price, fast newegg shipping schedule

Cons: it is very difficult to get a contact with ZMODO. In fact, I tried to call them and I waited almost 2 hours, it is still can't get any person to talk with me. I tried to send a message via email. They promise to give me a RMA, but I wait almost 2 days at this moment, I still didn't get any respond after that. This is the worst customer service that I ever seen.

Other Thoughts: My advice is DON't USE THEIR PRODUCTS, you will get a headache once the device has problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Our support team is not open over the weekend, and that can delay the RMA process at times. We were unable to find your RMA in our system today, there may habe been some sort of miscommunication. Our records show that we don't have any phone calls waiting for 2 hours during our business hours Monday through Friday, 8 am to 8 pm central time zone.

You can call us at 866-551-6881 extension 8117, leave your number with us here,, or email us at Our tech support team is open from 8 am to 8 pm central time zone, Monday through Friday.

1 out of 5 eggsIncompatible with HD

Pros: Nice unit, small, better overall to my older Zmodo that this was intended to replace.

Cons: Would not format the Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive that I bought along with it. I tried EVERYTHING, including online research and tech support there was no solution to be found. It recommends DVR/Surveillance rated HDs that spin at 5400 rmp. Those are kinda hard to find. Got an RMA from Newegg and back it went.

Other Thoughts: Would be a nice option if not for the HD format issue.

2 out of 5 eggsSo-So product

Pros: Had a SVAT 4 camera system that died after 2 years. Decided to change to a 8 camera system. Placed a 1TB hard drive from my windows pc (extra) in the case and it formatted quickly. With high quality resolution it gave 28 days of recording time for 4 cameras. Up and running by just plugging in the cameras from old SVAT dvr into the first 4 ports. They look as good as they did on the SVAT system. Internet was easier to connect than SVAT as you only need to open the media port and the mobile phone port on your router. I suggest changing the port from the defaults so that bots have a more difficult time of finding your cameras. Software was much easier to use than the SVAT. Happy with dvr and its software.

Cons: On the Con side, all 4 cameras that came with the Zmodo product are blurry and show more on the blue side of the color scheme than true colors. The top of each camera has a rain/dust hood cover. There is no screw to hold the cover in place, it is just rested there. When you turn off the lights and view the camera in infrared mode, everything is blurred so much you can barely tell what you are looking at. If you are using the product to simply see if there is movement somewhere or if there might be a person walking in your yard, then this is fine. To tell who the person is, impossible.

Other Thoughts: As the dvr is the main item in this, even if you toss the cameras and purchase better ones, you will most likely come out ahead. Using the system with the included cameras, not worth the time to set it up. I am a techie and this system was a piece of cake to setup. The 3rd party KMEYE4 and KMEYEsuper for the iPhone/iPad are really nice. Open the app, enter the ip, port and name/password and it hooks you up instantly. Very nice.

4 out of 5 eggsGood value for basic system

Pros: The system was easy to set up, just a matter of 2 plugs per camera, installing the hard drive (piece of cake) and installing the software. Cameras are decent for what they are, budget. The Zmodo system has several choices for recording, all of which work fine.

Cons: If you don't have even a moderate working background with computer program and internet access you may want to pass on this. The instructions are in, what I can only surmise, are English as translated through perhaps an internet translation program from Chinese, in other words they are a joke. Nor is it clear how to access your system through an internet access, that required about an hour of fiddling with IP addresses and port access numbers before I hit in the magic numbers.

Other Thoughts: Look, for $150 you would be hard pressed to find a system that includes 4 cameras, a DVR system, all of the wiring AND the capability of accessing your cameras from a smart phone. I am quite happy with this purchase.

3 out of 5 eggsZMODO PKD-DK0863-NHD 8 CH CCTV Surveillance DVR Outdoor Camera System (HD Sold Separately)

Pros: i like viewing area and capacity, has a nice zoom in feature, able to view all cameras hooked up, has 1, 4, 6, 9(8) camera viewing table, hdd and camera installation was ok, can turn brightness up and down as needed, ability to name cameras

Cons: manual for setup is incomplete, zoom in feature is all scraggly but it is a cheap piece of technology, screwing in the hdd and the cover on was a pain, nightvision support?, no auto camera settings for day and night, needs better android app capability

Other Thoughts: needs to have a better manual and actually tell you how to install and what you need to know to when your knowledge of security cameras isnt there, there was too gibberish much for security camera dont know hows

5 out of 5 eggsNot for the faint of heart

Pros: PRICE! For the money, not much can touch this. And image quality at d1 is fantastic. This box can do just about anything.

Cons: Takes about a day to get running for mere mortals. You have to take about a day to get everything set up. After that, you have to tweak the image in the software, but it works great.

Other Thoughts: This system is not easy. If you don't have the manual, you are going to be lost. It took me a long time to get this set up right. But after I was done, whoa, this thing is really super. It has tons of options. I got the bare bones version that I had to add my own drive and Cams. That was good. Should of got an 8 channel one now that I think about it. But, really, this is one nice unit. Fit and finish are about right for the price point. And on the board, it has a place to power a small fan. I used a 10k Raptor drive to see how it works. Funny, it said in the manual that you need to use a DVR rated harddrive or it will fail in a short time. (LOL) Great Nice thing is that it can be used with a large 12V battery in line with the power supply as a back up. WORKS GREAT! Image quality at D1 is Magic. Web interface works great. But you have to set IE security settings to low, so IE complains like mad.
