3 out of 5 eggsFair but poor cameras.

Pros: Good software and good software support and website. Dvr is small enough to be placed anywhere discreet.
Cable is small and for the most part adequate in length. Snapping in and formatting A Harddrive for recording purpose is childplay. Unit once set up can operate in headless mode. Cameras withstood the blizzard without collecting moisture. Motion detection is good.

Cons: Poor cameras. Day time visibility is good, night time visibility is barely 6 ft. Camera angle is very narrow making placement an exercise in geometry and contortion. Cable is exposed and not routed through the mounting base. This leave the thin cable exposed and easily vandalized. The narrow angle and limited distance make coverage difficult. The monitoring software is not available for linux systems despite the fact that the DVR is Linux based.

Other Thoughts: Buy better cameras to replace cameras for critical areas. CCD may be better but experiment. Disabling the active X security settings in internet explorer is not an ideal setup. For Android two software is available and they load fast on android 4.0 up. they are also available for android 2.2

4 out of 5 eggsAlot of bang for the buck

Pros: Right out of the box add a drive I went big so I have more playback. can see at night. And the tech support is great they will get you running, as I did have a network issue (my ISP blocks port 80) and they got me around that. Tech support is English speaking.

Cons: only IE seems to work with the web client but again its not a $1500 system, I do agree the email with image is some delayed and missing the shot but it does give you a time stamp to search playback.

Other Thoughts: I will probably buy again to setup for friends.

2 out of 5 eggsDecent DVR, but bad cameras

Pros: instant on. easy to setup and use. can email pictures with motion detection alarm

Cons: dvr is slow. motion detection doesn't capture the motion, but starts recording 3-5 seconds after the motion is detected, which by that time the person is already past the camera's view. the cameras' picture is dark and can barely detect shapes, even in broad daylight. maybe it's the cheap cables that came with it? i plan to order a better system with better cameras

5 out of 5 eggsGood Starter kit for a Surveillance System

Pros: I got this kit because I need a camera setup for my home. I had an extra HDD. Easy setup and internet set up

Cons: Connecting the kit toward using the 3g app is a bit of a long stretch. If you don't have a Static internet service provider it gonna require you a bit of research.

it not impossible, just time consuming.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Bad Bad

Pros: NONE

Cons: Unit was unusable out of box. Camera quality was like looking at old film negitives. Tech support was COMPLETELY unhelpfull. "you could buy better cammeras" Company would not return or replace. Sending unit back to NewEgg. I guess I'm not so mad that it was DOA....it happens, but their support was just BAD.

4 out of 5 eggsSuprising value and quality

Pros: Right out of the box it had a quality look and feel. Everything carefully packaged. I tested all of the components immediately and everything was 100% operational.
Setup was pretty self-explanatory. I never did read the directions.
Price. For under $100 to get 4 cameras.. it's crazy cheap.
Doesn't come with a drive - I can put my own in, and when it fails, I can handle the warranty rather than through the OEM who purchased it.
Website has a lot of helpful information.
Works best in Firefox.
It's just fun.

Cons: Discontinued product, not that it matters.
Cables to cameras are awfully thin.
Color on cameras is wonky, probably due to the cables.
The requirements to get the software to work in IE are a bit nutty.
The tiny DVR needs a fan inside.

Other Thoughts: First I want to note, this is a $100 video surveillance system, folks. It's not a $1000 or $5000 system. It's 100 bucks. Do not get your expectations up. That being said, I've been incredibly impressed with what this system CAN do. Yes, the picture from the cameras can be iffy, the colors can be off, the night vision is ok but very narrow, the cables are really thin, and getting your entire network configured so you can access it from the outside world can be a challenge for non-techies.. but if you're a geek and like to play with stuff, for $99 this will give you the best bang for your buck, so to speak. And you get 4 cameras, so if you screw something up, you have plenty of parts to work with. (I accidentally cut a wire to the first camera via sliding glass door.)

I think the best solution to the thin wires, would to be to use a video balun. Newegg has a bunch of them, but make sure you find one that also sends power. Using a video balun lets you use standard CAT5 network cables. You can even run multiple cameras over a single CAT5 cable. I intend to try some and see what the difference is in the picture from the cameras.

I put a 500G 2.5" laptop drive in mine, so it uses less power, creates less heat than a 3.5" drive. The little CPU and heatsink on the board in the DVR gets pretty hot.. so I added a small 25mm fan to mine to help keep it cool(er.)

The requirements to get IE to run the activex control.. by disabling all of the security in IE, is just bad. Use Firefox, or Chrome even. They work. In fact in IE I could never play back any of the saved video. It would just crash IE. I thought other browsers weren't supported, but discovered it DOES support Firefox, and quite perfectly, and without disabling your browser's security. There's support for Safari too but I've not tried it.

I use IP Cam Viewer Lite on my Android phone. It works very well.
