4 out of 5 eggsFine for what it is

Pros: For what it is and the price, I have had good results... The system has been running for 5 months without a hitch...
Setup was pretty smooth, have to connect by ethernet first to configure the wireless (how else you going to do it?)
They give you a utility to scan your network and find the cams quickly.
Was $300 when I got mine. - 4 wireless IP cams. dvr and 1TB. can't complain

Cons: Typical level of documentation for a low priced (chinese) device, but so what!

Note that the $1800 system I put in for my office was smoother and has more features... but it's also 6x the price!

Other Thoughts: I prefer wireless ip cams since it's pretty easy to hide the DVR (can't follow the wires from the cams to the dvr!)

1 out of 5 eggsAwful

Pros: None so far.

Cons: Wow. What a HUGE disappointment. Where to begin? I guess I'll go through my experiences from the very beginning.

1. Instructions are horrible, everywhere (in print, on website, and on software). Expect instructions (or lack thereof) to not be complete, not cover possible errors, and be scattered into several documents. You will literally have to search and guess.

There is a slip of colored paper that has a website for you to go to download the software. The link is broken and I had to search for it on Google.

2. Slots on the back are in the most awkward positions all tight together. You literally cannot unplug the network cable if you have the monitor plugged into it already. USB slots are also right under the VGA port.

3. Devices have to be set up via Ethernet cable before it can be set up wireless.

4. Cameras are showing about one frame every 50 seconds over WiFi (and I have a typical Linksys router with great signal). I read online though that others have this problem before downloading a firmware update.

5. The firmware update is not available online? It apparently has to be requested through their technical support! (As of the time of this writing, their support is unavailable, so I'm left to wait until tomorrow)

Firmware also has to be updated via USB. It can't just be downloaded and installed like a normal operating system would allow... Why?

6. The software for searching the cameras commonly does not find the devices, although I got them showing on the monitor.

7. Extra rant: Their website has false reviews to encourage people to buy their product... Every one of the reviews has a rating of 5 out of 5 and they also have the exact same punctuation errors! (there is a space missing before every period and comma). That is completely unethical to type your own reviews to trick users into buying your product.

8. Zmodo's Android app is not any better. There are bugs everywhere and it seems impossible to understand how to connect to the NVR and cameras. It's confusing, and there is virtually no documentation for it (they mention it briefly in one of the documents from the download).

9. Error messages are EVERYWHERE! Not only do they occur often. but they were written by someone either not fluent in English or by a 6 year old. Here are some examples (letter-by-letter):

MESSAGE
Main thread is running search ,Please waitting !

10. The settings are not intuitive, as claimed. You will definitely need to spend some time jotting down port numbers, IP addresses, and hope you get everything down right.

I hope that I can edit this review (not often I type them) in case Zmodo replies back and gives me some insight. I really would like to get this product working, if at all possible.

Other Thoughts: By the way, I have a Bachelors of Business Administration in Management Information Systems and run a technology company. You will not only need a technical person to help you, but a very patient one to work with you on this if you don't understand computer networks.

Hope to hear back from Zmodo!

5 out of 5 eggsawesome system

Pros: The problem that other people may be having is the same thing I went through. These cameras have an awesome res. Thus , you must have throughput. Once you give them what they want , they kick it. The specs should tell you what they need, but they don't. You need at least a 10 megabyte connection to get them to hang on. Use speedtest.net on your smart phone to tell what kind of speed you get. Wifi analyzer also helps with knowing what you have for signal. truly handle all lighting conditions!

Cons: Have to know what your doing. manufacture specs lack in telling what kind of hardware you need as a minimum. They start fuzzing out at 15 below zero, but still keep going .

Other Thoughts: Been testing for months. I have learned a lot. this kit needs to attached to fast hardware. Gigabit would be most desirable.

1 out of 5 eggspoor choice

Pros: The software works great and NEWEGG? I received the kit within 48 hours!

Cons: The wireless cameras began failing after running them for a few days. They have to be constantly repowered up. The NVR cannot be directly to a Windows computer and the software won't run on Apple OS. I have a non functioning camera and am expected to pay freight to get it replaced. Their customer service is like one guy! Wait 30 minutes to speak with him. He is competent. Make sure you reach ZMODO because ZMODO.com is really just a distributor. THat was according to the person I contacted at ZMODO.COM. He said that he was the President of ZMODO , and that they "Repeata" were really distributors. I am contacting the main office in PRC.

Other Thoughts: I could have purchased the same wired kit (Refurbed) for $100. Now I am running 25 feet of cat 5 cable to get a "Wireless Camera to work! THe NVR reboots and when it does? It drops cameras out! I feel insecure with this security system!

3 out of 5 eggszmodo wireless nvr system

Pros: For the money? This system is wonderful. Setup (if all equipment works out of the box), is painless! A Linux 1 TB hard drive is a plus as well

Cons: The static Network addresses of the 4 cameras do not always work. The cameras need a good amount of ambient light to function properly. The power cables for the cameras are real short. Spring for the optional 100 feet optional set!

Other Thoughts: Going thru an internet service provider for the same security system will cost about $50 a month!

1 out of 5 eggsJunk

Pros: None. Really, there are no pros to these.

Cons: These are really junk. I have spent hours with tech support but really only about 5 minutes since you cannot get through. The motion does not work, the alarm does not work, you can only constant stream even with their firmware upgrades. Their instructions do not even match the firmware upgrades and the only thing tech support keeps saying is go to this webpage, the same webpage I have been at 100 times. One camera just quit working. It works, then quits, then works, then quits. Everyday the camera's go offline at random times so I have to keep rebooting them. Some days 1 is off some days 2, some days all of them, sometimes they come back on. So I hard wired them to see if the eliminates the issue, nope same problem. The DVR randomly reboots. If you are trying to playback a video stream it just reboots. So your video stremas have all these blank spots. I have spent 40 hours or more messing with these.

Other Thoughts: We have other video systems. Our home got robbed and we got good videos of the crook so I decided to put in more Camera's so we bought the Zmodo, what a waste of money. We bought these for more security, if they don't work, not much of a security except to hang under the eaves. We have had no issues with the other systems. So now I had to buy another system and install them. Do not buy these.
