4 out of 5 eggsa few oddities fixed

Pros: Great price, small and lightweight

Cons: After adding a WD 2TB AV HDD I ran into some beeping/rebooting problems. But fixed them (see other)
Could use at least one external sensor input. But for the price? Hey.
Also mouse was intermittently functional.

Other Thoughts: After adding a WD 2TB AV HDD I ran into some beeping/rebooting problems. Did some YouTube research and found that if the HDD wasn't freshly formatted with NO cameras plugged in, it would do this. Still had the problem after the format. I even ran SpinRite on the HDD for over 100 hours (level 2) but found the drive had no errors. Finally I decided to replace the intermittent mouse and that took care of the beep/reboot problems. Good thing too because my dog was afraid of the beeps and had abandoned me.
This unit runs hot with no fan so added a couple of micro squirrel cage fans plugged into the socket provided for a fan and now all is cool albeit slightly less quiet than before.

5 out of 5 eggsZmodo KDS8

Pros: The Zmodo KDS8 is a great Surveillance DVR Kit, it works 100% and the cameras are good as well with a night vision of around 60' The user interface is good also and is easy to navigate when doing a record search. The unit seem to be compatible with just about any hard drive I use from an old 80 GB to the newest 1 TB.

Cons: N/A, just a simple cheap DVR Kit, I really don't think you will be dissatisfied with this unit.

Other Thoughts: The Zmodo KDS8 definitely better than my KGUARD which totally broke after 5 months and the cameras slowly broke before all 4 having to be replaced. I like these Zmodo KDS8 cameras so much that hopefully I can get 4 of the same models as the one that come with this kit.

3 out of 5 eggsGood Hardware, Questionable Software

Pros: It is a relatively cheap unit, that has a great interface, easy setup, and quite a few options including ftp.

Cons: HOWEVER, this software cd that was included with my kit has hit positive for two viruses, on two seperate computers, using two different brands of scanner (scanning the cd directly).

MP4Player_en.exe > positive for Win32/Tanatos.M
NVMS(English)_basic_5.2.26082(C006).exe Tanatos as well

Other Thoughts: I dont know what kind of code they are using for their monitoring software, but ....well i will probably never know because im not going to be installing it Im probably jsut going to sync a backup drive with the video via ftp every night.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad being on a budget

Pros: It's relatively easy to setup, decent cameras, good length of cable for the cameras, inexpensive (I got it on sale for under $140).

There is an App you can use to view the camera feeds, a desktop application, and you can view directly from the DVR (as long as you have a monitor setup)

Cons: Setup is not as intuitive as one might like. I'm not exactly an amateur with this stuff and it took me a bit to get everything setup.

Make sure you read the directions, and I highly suggest using the online networking assistance Zmodo provides.

Doesn't come with a Hard Drive

Other Thoughts: Take your time setting it up, read the directions, use the online help. It's a good system once it's all up and running.

2 out of 5 eggsNo tech support!

Pros: Cheap.

Cons: Stone age software. Have tried everything to get remote viewing to work outside of my house, but can't make it happen. Instruction that came with this are bad!! And the newer instructions for this system on their website just make things more confusing. Should have bought a better brand.

Other Thoughts: It was cheap, but it is basic and is really only easy to setup the cameras to record....remote viewing is a joke with their instructions. I am going to toss this thing a buy one from a better company.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your valuable feedback on Zmodo products and service. We would like to have the opportunity to work with you directly to help with the remote setup issues you are having.

5 out of 5 eggsExceptional Product

Pros: I bought this to replace a shuttle computer built to run my security camera software. If you ensure you buy a hard drive that is DVR grade this is the perfect replacement for a stand-alone computer. Runs cool even with a 2TB hard drive and the PTZ camera option is fun to learn and play with. Highly recommend this product.

Cons: Didn't enjoy running the cords through the wall for the new RS-485 camera and the additional night vision cameras (I had 4 cameras on my old system) but I purchased a couple of extra cords as backups just so I never have to run any more cords through my man-room wall to the attic ever again!

Other Thoughts: Please don't attempt to format the new hard drive prior to installing in Zmodo DVR. An on-screen option is available on this DVR to do all of that quickly and simply even with a 2 TB hard drive.

5 out of 5 eggsZmodo Dvr 4 camera kit

Pros: Easy to set up, Price Point, Value, Video quality far better the other review say

Cons: Only view is one camera or 4 can't do a two camera view. I'm finding out an alarm or motion notification would be nice hard to go back and watch 8 hours of video looking for something

Other Thoughts: I would highly recommend this kit easy to use and shows good at night! I was really surprised how well it worked after other reviews. Wish I would had bought the 8 channel kit. Not a high end commercial unit but perfect for all the entrance ways into the house!!

2 out of 5 eggs

Pros: 1. inexpansive

Cons: 1. I need some explanation from zmodo, I downloaded "update_47G1_mini-4-8_B137_V138_20130604.tar.gz" and update the firmware, why it still says invalid channel on the iphone?

2. you shouldn't sell products that need major firmware update, not many people know how to update firmware

3. "Infrared Illumination (Night Vision): up to 65ft (20m)" this statement is mis-leading, the night sight range is very very close in the "total darkness". If this product can't have the up to 65ft night sight range in the total darkness, why name it? (my definition of dark is total darkness, your definition of dark is dark with some light)

4. about the web view (seeing the view on the web browser), it only supports ie and must be windows because it uses active x, you can't use other browsers/ OS.

5. if I can't get the zviewer on the iphone work, can you offer a free return label? you are selling a product that's not the same as the description.

6. if you don't know how to update the firmware, this product isn't for you.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We would appreciate the opportunity to work with you directly to help with problems with the firmware update. Our free tech support service would gladly like to help you get the firmware updated. At that time they can also help get you set up for remote viewing on the Zviewer application.

Please contact us at 866-551-6881 extension 8117 or email, so that we may work with you to solve these issues.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Performance

Pros: Set up was easier than expected. Basic feature ran almost automaticly. Lots of extra features I could spend days playing with. i.e. motion sensor, email alerts, remote display

Cons: I never got the remote view to work on my iphone, LAN or WAN. Instructions left a lot to be desired.

Other Thoughts: Overall I'm very happy with the purchase. I want to purchase another set.

1 out of 5 eggsDefective

Pros: Some of it worked....

Cons: ....only some of it worked.

Basically, 2 of the 8 BNC ports are not working. Regardless of the camera/cables used- no video.

I had planned to fill the unit with 8 cameras, but I will be stopping at 6 cameras.

Other Thoughts: If it cost more, I would be more interested in returning. But spending another $20 to return it is not logical. That's what I get for chasing a low dollar/quality solution.
