3 out of 5 eggsOK budget surveillance but not without problems

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: This is probably one of the most affordable DVR surveillance systems that I have come across. I have read up on a lot of them and they all sound like they have their problems so I figured I couldn't go too wrong here.

I found the physical system setup to be very easy. The camera mounting gear is very easy to work with and luckily I have siding to hide the wires underneath.

The actual DVR software is nice. It's easy to use and to navigate between cameras. The motion detector is very sensitive and you have access to a grid image that you can specify which areas you want to be motion detected or not. Event viewing is also very easy to access and all events are broken down into 4 time blocks that make it more manageable.

As a local camera viewer it provides a lot of convenience and security.

Cons: I bought this before going on vacation so I could check in on my property while away. The first system I had to immediately return to Newegg because it shipped with a broken SATA port. I asked for a refund and refund on my shipping as well and Newegg kindly gave me a credit.
I ordered another system and received it fairly quick. Everything worked when it was setup but I did not have an easy time with the port forwarding for the remote viewing option. There are no instructions included that specify which ports that your router needs to forward. On the Zmodo website it's not really self explanatory. You basically choose a picture that looks like your DVR interface and choose the ports instructed. Initially, I chose the wrong DVR and went through hell and back trying to figure out why I couldn't get the ports open. Different DVR setups will use different ports and I was trying to configure the wrong ports for my system. Eventually I found the proper setup, although the DVR interface did not look like mine. The ports that need to be forwarded are 80, 8000, and 9000.
I made sure everything worked before I went on vacation and while overseas I was able to check in on my laptop. The windows Zviewer software seemed to have the least amount of problems for me. I also tried the software for the Ipad and Iphone. I had better luck with the iPad app than the Iphone app. On the Iphone the image appeared to be stretched and just looked like indistinguishable vertical lines. I get this result on the iphone app about 70% of the time.
After a little over a month 3 out of 4 of the camera developed a hazy and purple image. During the day the images were very unclear because of this. I believe it has something to do with the transition from color during the day to black & white at night. I have contacted Zmodo about the problem and they have issued and RMA saying that I could just return the faulty cameras. They are currently on their way and I will update more once the RMA is received.

Other Thoughts: I think this system is a pretty good value but I don't have a lot of faith that the cameras to last. If they have to be replaced outside of the warranty period then this would not be such a great deal.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy with purchase

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: (Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD))I think this is a great system for a medium or small size home, this was somewhat of a upgrade for me. I did have a older 4 cam Everfocus system (was used in a business) that was given to me. So I was able to upgrade to a 8 cam system. Anyone with a good understanding of tech can figure out this system without using the directions.

Cons: I wish the directions had more of a explanation/definition of certain acronyms used to make it easier for a person fine tuning the system to reference back to.

Other Thoughts: Overall its a great budget system. The most time took on the install of this system is installing the cameras, otherwise its a breeze. Installing the remote features was also easy (overall)...but if you have a _Comcas__finity combo gateway/router it can be a pain in the but, with time you can figure it out. (The Comcas__finity modem is not listed on their setup tutorial, but you can substitute one of the others ones on the list for it.)

5 out of 5 eggsZmodo System

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: I was looking for a surveillance system so that I can see my home when I am away. I live by myself and travel often with no one really to look over my home. It made me very uneasy knowing that if something happened to my home no one would know for days. This kit was very easy to setup and I was able to do it over a weekend with no problem, and with no previous security experience.

After getting the system all setup I was very pleased with the video quality. The night vision is good, and allows me to see who walks up to my doors. The DVR has a lot of great features that allows me to record exactly what I want to, without having to waste time later if I need to review any of the footage. Motion detection works great and it really makes efficient use of my hard drive space. The menu interface on the DVR is fairly user friendly and it’s pretty easy to find what I need to get the settings set accordingly to my preference.

Obviously for me though, the best part is being able to view my system from my cell phone. The initial setup did take me a little bit of tinkering to get my phone connected, but once I had it setup it has been great ever since.

Cons: The one area this system came up short literally and figuratively was the length of the cables. The cables are 60 feet long, which was fine for 2 of my cameras, but the others I needed to get longer cables to reach where I wanted to place my cameras. I would advise getting the measurements of the length of cables you need to make sure the 60 foot ones will work, of if you need to also get some longer ones.

Other Thoughts: The system is a good buy for a simple surveillance solution without emptying your wallet. The performance per dollar spent was definitely a good value in my book.

3 out of 5 eggsGood for the money, but beware.

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: DVR and cameras are fairly good quality for what the price is. Good for a starter kit and easy to set up WITHOUT using the virus infected setup disc.

Cons: DONT USE THE SOFTWARE THAT COMES WITH THIS. It contains several network payload viruses.Other than that I have had no issues with this product.

3 out of 5 eggsProbably no better or worse than others

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Price. These things are cheap, but for the price, its is a good value

Cons: The documentation is absolutely terrible. I know this is a Chinese company, but they should spend a little money and have someone properly translate their documentation to english. The documentation is almost worthless. Picture quality is not that good, but good enough for the price.

Other Thoughts: I've never used another brand of these DIY security DVR's, but I would venture to guess that the quality is about the same on all of them. The quality of the picture is not as good as your $60 IP cameras (wireless or wired). When I see security footage on the local news channels, I always wondered why the quality was so bad (now that we live in an HD world). Now I see why. That being said, you can get an HD security DVR system, but you'll pay alot more money.

1 out of 5 eggsDVR randomly reboots; returned the item but got exact same unit with the exact same problem

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Camera works.

Cons: The DVR randomly reboots.
Interval of reboots ranges from 20 mins to 2 hours.
I returned the unit to Zmodo in Champaign, IL, providing the customer service with the log saved from DVR.
The log shows "Illegal shutdown" every time it reboots by itself.
I got the "replacement unit" 3 weeks later.
Found out the mac address of DVR is the same as before.

It doesn't feel right.

Indeed it has the same problem of random rebooting.
I also checked the log in DVR.
It shows the unit was run for an hour on the day their QA tested (date of service is trackble on their RMA online system) and the same problem showed up: "Illegal shutdown".
Then... there is no log entry after that until I got it back.

Whatever the QA did, he/she did not verify the fix, if there was any at all.
The same unit was sent back without proper test, fix or replacement.

By the way, I paid the return cost since they only do so if it was within 30 days of purchase.

If the customer service is not sub par, their tech level, QA control definitely is.
If you want a stable surveillance system but not ton of trouble nor sloppy support, if this one is not for you.

Manufacturer Response:

Jun L.

I apologize for the difficulty you are having with your system. I would recommend contacting Zmodo support to determine why the same system was sent back to you. If they are not able to resolve the issue without having you send the system back to them, then it is likely that they will be able to cover the return shipping since it is a continuing issue. If you send an email to newegg-support@zmodo.com with your issue and contact information, then they will be able to have a technical support representative contact you about the issue. For any other concerns you may have please contact us at 217-903-5037.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Upgrade

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: I bought this to replace an older Zmodo 4 camera system I had for a couple of years. Very pleased with this DVR.

Cons: Network setup can be a bit tricky, but call or live chat with Zmodo customer service. They are very helpful.

5 out of 5 eggsZmodo: Did what I expected once again

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Great system on a budget. Easy to configure, upgrade cameras with 600TVL.
I have purchased Zmodo before and it is a good brand if you understand you get what you pay for.

Cons: Like ALL cheap kits, the cables are basically junk. I normally purchase video baluns and use CAT5 for the cameras, it cost more but I am a network guy CAT5 is easy to run.

Other Thoughts: This is review of the Zmodo system NOT Newegg. If it were, I would leave ZERO EGGS! I have been a customer of Newegg for a good 10 years and their customer service SUCKS! The run around they gave me through over this purchase (and a couple of others) has driven me to other retailers, do yourself a favor and RUN FROM THIS SITE!!

2 out of 5 eggswaiting again

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ4ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 4 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: price during cybermonday and higher tvl i suppose

Cons: well lacking info on the voltage required by cameras etc, in fact, the was only a manual for the DVR not the cameras. Now for the fun part plugged this up hoping to get my first security system up and running, only a light within the dvr was lit showing electricity was flowing but no lights on the front of DVR and no picture displlayed on screen. i tried everything i found from the manual to the web, and i had ffollowed the manuals sugggestion not to skip steps. Call newegg for a replacement, more on that bad experience later. anyhow after that i went back to the dvr and started disasembling it for shipment, first thing i did was to plug out the mouse from back usb port, viola the system powered up what the heck. anyhow waiting on a replacement but disappointed by zmodo so far, i tried their web viewer in that moment of life it powered up and was stuck at login screen after installing the untrusted plugin etc and creating an account at the dvr itself, still wouldnt let me log in at all port 5050 etc. frustrating, almost wondering why i asked for a replacement should just try swann or nightowl or something

Other Thoughts: and now onto Newegg, they used to rule the web there was nothing technical that i didnt buy from them quick shipping great customer service, not anymore they are letting the jungle AMAZiNg company beat them now i had to plead for advance shipping on my replacement and then they had to get special approval to do it, i had to suggest keeping my card and charge it if you dont get back your product. Ok that got done but was the ordeal over? no i asked when it ships out since i have shop runner and paid for two day shipping on first delivery will i get the same speed shipping, rep said yes, great right? wrong they took three days to ship out of wharehouse THEN they shipped it ground 5 day shipping, these were the reasons local store fronts were still alive but that prime jungle company i mentioned earlier is working on eradicating store fronts and if newegg continues like this, them too. i will spend the extra 30 bucks if that much next time and go with a company that honors their two day shipping rule

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

The reason there isn’t a manual for the cameras is because they aren’t adjustable. The cameras use a 12v adapter which is included in the kit. As far as DVR, is seems that a RMA will be needed for a replacement. Port 5050 is one of the 4 default ports. 80, 5050, 6050, and 7050 are all of the default ports. We do encourage you to work directly with us to help resolve equipment issues.

You can contact us at 866-551-6881 extension 8117 or email support@zmodo.com, so that we may work with you resolve this issue.

Best Regards,
Zmodo Sales and Support
