3 out of 5 eggsNot bad, but requires ActiveX

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ8ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Decent quality for the price, 8 cameras, video quality is pretty good

Cons: Requires ActiveX, which limits you to Internet Explorer

Other Thoughts: I really wish this noted that you have to run ActiveX. As a Mac household, I have to run a Windows VM just to view these cameras on the network. Not good, not to mention how insecure IE remains.

4 out of 5 eggsGet what you pay for

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ8ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: The price for an 8 camera package with IR illumination was attractive.

Cons: The cameras, wires and box are cheaply made. Illumination by the IR LEDs lacks uniformity, resulting in a brighter ring within the field of view with shading in the center and outer edges. The ability to isolate time segments and export video is very primitive and complicated to use.

Other Thoughts: Thus far (7 mo.), the unit works and does the job, though with more complication than expected. You should expect a cheap feel to all of the items, but again they do work.

1 out of 5 eggsBeware!

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ8ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Works well as intended keeping in mind it is a low end system.

Cons: There is a virus on the install CD that will allow all of the data on your network to be stolen. It is not an accident and the Zmodo response of "its ad-ware" is a lie. If you follow the online instructions, You will be installing the virus, opening up your router and disabling the ActiveX controls on IE which gives away the keys to your house.

Other Thoughts: Do not hook up to your network.

1 out of 5 eggsZMODO 8 x 600TVL system

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ8ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: On the good side the DVR processor seems faster than other brands I have used. The menu system and setup is easy and relatively painless. Once you get the the web interface working it is efficient and has just enough settings to make the system flexible. And the really big PRO, it was inexpensive. The mobile phone app is easy to install and get configured.

Cons: Cons - Where to begin...... Oh yeah how about the cameras. Very poor quality; the worst 600TVL I have worked with. I wasn't expecting much, got less. The night vision rating on the camera box says 80 ft, the product description says 65 ft, the reality is about 30 feet in the dead center of the field of view. Anywhere but dead center and it drops to just a few feet.

Next, security. This is supposed to be a security system, but they completely overlook information security. To get the web interface working you have to break several infosec best practices; including accepting unverified certificates, "anonymous" active X components, and it must run as Administrator (even on WIN7). To make the cameras available to the smartphones you have to put the router in a DMZ or poke pinholes in your firewalls. But they provide really rudimentary password options and will not allow changes to the "Admin" login name. Basically, anybody can write a numerical looping routine and brute force into my DVR within 1,000,000 tries ( a couple of hours)

Additional issues - When I put the accompanying CD in the drive, my antivirus SW quarantined it. Apparently there is a virus in the SW provided on the CD. The web interface only works with Internet Explorer. I'm a Firefox advocate, but could live with IE if it didn't require Admin rights and disabling so many security features.

Other Thoughts: So am I going to return the system? Probably not. I spent an entire weekend running wires, caulking holes and configuring hardware. Even if I wanted to spend another weekend taking it out I doubt they would take it back since I have caulk all over the cables and much of the packing materials got discarded.

Basically NewEgg sent me an email with an offer I couldn't pass up...... I should have passed this one up.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for your feedback on Zmodo products and service. The issues you are having with the night vision could be due to the lack of lighting or positioning of the camera. The IR lights need to be able to reflect of objects, if it’s pointed out to bare space you won’t be able to pick up anything in the viewing area.

We believe the virus signal you came across could have been adware if you didn’t uncheck boxes during the installation process. As a responsible manufacture, we can guarantee it is 100% virus free.

This system is designed for surveillance security, the concerns that you have about protecting the system password is a common network security issue. You are able to change the password to the system, and can also create additional users with unique usernames and passwords as well. Furthermore, we do have some DVRs that do not require Active X, please contact us directly for the model number of those DVRs.

For any additional issues we would be glad to assist you. You can contact us at support@zmodo.com or 866-551-6881 extension 8117. Our support hours are Monday - Friday 8am to 8pm CST.

Best Regards,
Zmodo Sales and Support

5 out of 5 eggsFirst try at CCTV

This review is from: Zmodo KDB8-CARQZ8ZN 8 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Impressed with the quality. This is the cheapest system I could find and it is still produces D1 from 600 line cameras. The night vision is real, you can see well a good 30 feet out in total darkness with the IR.

Cons: Not a real con but some of the Engrish (Chinese translation) is humorous. But you can still get the point.

Other Thoughts: If this is your first CCTV you will have to do some study to understand the lingo and option but this system will fill the bill for most people.
