4 out of 5 eggsFrom a serious tech geek point of view

This review is from: Zmodo KDH6-CARQZ8ZN 16 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: DVR works, email notifications on motion detection work. System has decent features for a very affordable price.

Cons: FTP feature does not work. The DVR is supposed to have the ability to ftp an image to your server when motion is detected, useful if you're concerned that a savvy thief might just steal the DVR while he's robbing your house. The option is listed on motion detection but does nothing. Zmodo is aware of this. It will upload an image on an "alarm trigger" but this is practically useless because you will get one image when the first motion is detected and then nothing more until you go to the unit and manually clear the alarm condition. Once I found out ftp would only upload images and not video, I gave up on it anyway. See Other Thoughts for a workaround.

Second major fault- recorded video is of much lower quality than live video. Even though the system previews the feeds at roughly 640x480 on a directly connected monitor, it only records and streams 360x240. There's an option in the menus to record 640x480, but it is disabled. I would much rather record 10 fps at 640x480, but Zmodo has disabled that feature.

Third annoyance: Proprietary format. They call their video H.264, but almost no player but their own will play the files. It is also only available for windows. So playing recorded videos on my Macbook? Nope. Converting videos on a linux server to something standard or streamable? Nope, that won't work either.

Fourth annoyance: Open telnet port, telnet server running. Zmodo will not give you the username or password to log in to the box. I'm sure some of the problems with these boxes could be fixed by power users, but they won't give anyone access to their own box.

Fifth minor annoyance: The camera colors are off. Browns/greens show up as purple, and although there's useful data there, the cameras switch to forced black and white when in night mode. Viewing angles could stand to be a little wider too. I will probably replace a few of the cameras, but for bundled cameras they're not horrible.

Other Thoughts: Workarounds: The DVR runs an ancient version of Samba. Modern Windows and Linux mostly won't connect to it, but older versions of smbget work well. If you have WinXP around, that's supposed to work too. There's a standard hidden account- root:888888 that can connect to the file sharing service. Using a combination of smbget and rsync allows me to pull the video files from the DVR and upload them to offsite backup every few minutes. Ideally I'd have the DVR push the video files, but that's the best we can do for now.

My workflow with this DVR is this: Email notifications on motion. If something looks suspect, connect to my website and download video. Fire up Windows machine or virtual machine and playback video file using Zmodo's player.

Ideally it would be this: Email notification on motion, if something looks suspect, click on link in email to play back video directly from DVR in browser. Unfortunately Zmodo's not there yet; I don't know who is.

It was a good system to learn on, but doing this again I wouldn't buy anything that records at less than D1 (720x480) resolution. In fact, despite having worked around the faults of this system to get a reasonable workflow, I'm probably going to trash it because the stills/videos/streaming from the unit are too low resolution.

1 out of 5 eggsDVR is old firmwarew

This review is from: Zmodo KDH6-CARQZ8ZN 16 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: The system does work at the core level.

Cons: This DVR has very dated firmware and allows viewing only with ActiveX in Internet Explorer. If you are ok with that the system will work for you.. If you want to be able to see the cameras on a mobile device or other browsers do not buy this model as there is no way to update the firmware.

5 out of 5 eggsA Good Simple System

This review is from: Zmodo KDH6-CARQZ8ZN 16 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: I was looking for a simple little system to help me keep an eye on my shop when I’m not around. The system works mostly as advertised. The setup was pretty easy and I would think most could get it up and running in an afternoon no problem. I did go a little above and beyond and ran my cables through a metal conduit to help protect them, as I have my cameras on the exterior of the building. The cameras otherwise were very simple to install.

The camera quality is okay, they have decent video with the ability to recognize faces with in the reasonable distance. The night vision works well, I found that its better when the camera isn’t pointing out into empty space so I have them angled at about 45 degree angle towards the ground and they work pretty better.

The DVR surprisingly has a lot of options and features for being a basic system, with multiple record modes, PTZ control ability, playback and phone viewing. I have chosen to have my cameras record on motion detection to conserve my hard drive space, although it does just automatically record over old video when it’s full. Currently I’m only using the 8 cameras that came in the package, but I still have 8 more slots available, and with the PTZ control I will probably look to buy some of PTZ cameras to replace the current cameras or just add to the system.

Being able to see my cameras on my phone is the best part. I get email alerts whenever my cameras pick up something, and I able to easily check out what’s going on. Having this constant surveillance has lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. I can’t always be at the shop, but just leaving it unprotected was uncomforting to say the least.

Cons: This system doesn’t come with hard drive already in it, so I had to buy one separately. Once I got it I was able to install and format it and then was able to record. I strongly recommend buying a hard drive when you purchase this system so that you can record right away

Other Thoughts: Overall I’ve had this system for a little more than a month and this system is what I was looking for. With ability to expand and enhance the system later as needed will probably ultimately end up being the best feature. I would recommend this for someone looking to protect their property when they can’t be there without breaking the bank.

3 out of 5 eggsReview Part 2

This review is from: Zmodo KDH6-CARQZ8ZN 16 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Works once you work through the kinks

Cons: Mentioned in my previous review but the bad english on the GUI and documentation.

Posting this 2nd review to add something important though...
The DVR does NOT have the ability to invert an image which I think is pretty important.

I installed my cameras from the ceiling and had no choice but to install them upside down. I checked and saw no way to simply invert or flip the image but luckily I did find a way around this, (see other thoughts for my solution)

Other Thoughts: Since ceiling mounting results in an upside down picture here is how to fix this if you plan to ceiling mount:

The camera's all have a visor on top, luckily the visor uses the same size bolt as the mount, so simply remove the visor and place the mount where the visor was connected and your image will now be rightside up. You could either leave the visor off or place it on the bottom.

Hope this helps someone else!

3 out of 5 eggsBasic system

This review is from: Zmodo KDH6-CARQZ8ZN 16 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Affordable, easy to setup. Nice packaging. As always New Egg delivers quickly.

Cons: DVR almost always gives a NO DISK error when powering on. Camera quality is marginal

Other Thoughts: The daytime color is off, green grass is a kinda brown color. There are constant changes from IR to regular with even the slightest outdoor light changes (cloud cover). This trigger the motion sensor to go off and gives false alarms. The contents of the package are complete; cabling, etc... But the cables are of minimal quality. Once connected the cameras show lines on the screen. I tried multiple cables with multiple cameras so it isn't a one time thing. Not sure if it is the camera or the cable, but as a package, you will get screen artifacts on a regular basis. Image quality is marginal. Don't expect to read license plates or identify people from any sort of distance; say more than 10 feet as the quality just isn't there. I am going to try a better camera to see if the quality improves. The DVR unit is nice, but the no disk message every power on is a pain. Do a google search, its not uncommon. Once its up and running, you at least have some form of security and the cameras may be a deterrent.

4 out of 5 eggsZmodo KDH6 - Good

This review is from: Zmodo KDH6-CARQZ8ZN 16 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: Initial set up pretty simple. Has all the cables and hardware needed. Price was great for a starter kit. Has room for up to 16 monitors and hard drives for recording (does have cables to hook up hard drives (which are not included). Camera are in color (daytime) and work well. Infrared at night or low light (not sure of distance). Little Icon of a walking man shows up on monitor to show motion on that camera. May take some doing but can add to network for access via email and internet.

Cons: Really not a con but, hard drives are a little spendy if, you are going to buy 2 - 2TB hard drives.
Unless it is really bright, camera's seem to go to infrared (black and white) reducing the quality of the picture.

Other Thoughts: Big monitor or TV works best for viewing. As stated in Cons hard drives can be expensive but, you can view without them, and I have used a couple smaller ones I had from other computers.

3 out of 5 eggsEngrish Anyone?

This review is from: Zmodo KDH6-CARQZ8ZN 16 Channel H.264 DVR Kit (No HDD), 8 X 600TVL, 3.6mm Wide Angle Lens, 24 IR LEDs for 65ft Night Vision

Pros: After alot of monkeying around it does work. Email alerts on motion detection is a nice feature

Cons: First of all the manual and GUI menus for the device itself are written in terrible English, its occasionally difficult to determine what is being conveyed.

For the first few days I could not get motion detection to work properly and even when turned on it was recording 2/4 on all channels even with no signal. After some searching around I learned that you have to plug the DVR into a monitor and disable "manual record" for all channels before motion detection will work.

Email was a challenge to get working, but I have to say this was no Zmodo's fault. I setup a dummy email account for the DVR and was unable to send test emails from the DVR. Turns out hotmail was blocking it, so gmail is the way to go if you go this route.

Also the knob on the cameras for adjusting the camera is cheap and you must be careful because on my first camera just to be able to tighten it enough so the camera would not wobble I ended up stripping the plastic knob that is attached to the bolt. Now the first camera is almost useless as it cant be tightened. Luckily I have 7 more and only need 4.

Other Thoughts: I bought this primarily for the email notification feature and if you do the same here are some things you should know.

I have the email alerts synced to my android phone. Once you get email setup on this device I recommend installing K-9 email for Android.

The reason I recommend this is because the default android mail client checks in for new mail once every 15 minutes at the FASTEST. This is a problem if you want realtime motion alerts.

K-9 email can checkin every 1 minute if you configure it that way (although its a greater battery drain).

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

We appreciate your feedback on Zmodo products and service. We are working to improve our user manuals to make for a much easier installation process. Also thank you for the information you provided about email alerts, as it will be useful information for other consumers.

If any other issues arise, please don’t hesitate to contact us and we would be glad to help assist. You can contact us at support@zmodo.com or 866-551-6881 extension 8117. Our support hours are Monday - Friday 8am to 8pm CST.

Best Regards,
