Highlights

Get the Big Picture

The image on the left depicts the video image difference between various video streaming technologies. Analog systems typically provide top resolution of 960x480 pixels, which is significantly smaller than 720p HD.

720p provides more viewing pixels (1280x720 pixels), which translates into a higher resolution image with amazing details and superior recognition. Captures a wider, undistorted, digital image that provides an accurate aspect ratio and more detailed video for superior recognition.

Pain-Free Installation — Plug and View On the Go

Installing an sPoE NVR system is so simple, you can do it yourself. sPoE IP cameras transmit both power and video along the same network cable, which means you only need to connect one cable to each camera. Plug in your recorder and connect your cameras; your system will automatically begin recording video.

What Has Been Improved?

P2P network protocol has been added to approve more network service companies. In most conditions, as long as you get Internet access, the strong network penetration lets you easily visit your NVR remotely after the initial QR-Code scan setup.

Access Your System from Anywhere

  • Operating system support: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
  • Compatible monitoring browsers: Internet Explorer 7.0 / 8.0 /9.0 / 10.0 /11.0, please use IE 7.0 / 8.0 /9.0 under Windows 8

4 out of 5 eggsPrice and Quality for a 720p system

Pros: 4 camera 720p complete system for a great price.
- Good picture quality
- pretty easy to setup

Cons: User interface is a bit lacking, would like the ability to add one or 2 more cameras over the network even if I was forced to buy zmodo. Like to be able to use cameras with other monitoring software.

Other Thoughts: Some helpful installation tips for future buyers.
- remote into each camera via IE and change password, assign a static IP address
- setup high quality resolution and make sure camera is set to auto sensing.
- update firmware via IE browser interface for all cameras and nvr system.
- I would recommend upgrading the packaged cat5 cables to a higher quality cat5e or cat 6.
- IR nightvision may appear little cloudy/chalky when you first set it up. Just shine a bright light at each camera to reset the IR LEDs and everything should work great after.

A lot of people will complain about viewing cameras remotely. The app works great while at home, however you have to use website service to view them remotely+app. The problem with this you need to open up ports on the router and upnp etc.. . I would highly recommend not doing this due to vulnerabilities to network intrusion. Better off buying a small hidden ip camera and set it up to alert you by email.

5 out of 5 eggsPricing and Quality

Pros: System is inexpensive, effective and the quality is really VERY GOOD... I install Security Systems for a living and purchased this to test at my home.. It has not giving me any issue, except the hard drive is not being recgonized - I will call zmodo for advice.. But this is a really great system - POE, 720p, Simplicity in setup A+++++

Cons: I'd like to see the GUI (user interface with a few more bells and whistles) logging in the unit via IE only.. The permissions issues and adding the ip exception can be a pain, but it worked none the less.. I would like to see an 8 port and 16/32 port version of this...

Other Thoughts: I do this for a living, and I can honestly say tou get a lot for a little here.. Great entry level system, With a little more effort on Zmodo

5 out of 5 eggsPrice is very reasonable for a 720p Security system

Pros: The set up was very easy, the image quality is fantastic, the smartphone scan QR code for IPhone works as advertise and the mobile view on the IPhone is good. No instruction manual, only a quick set up guide but so far was easy to install.

Cons: Would benefit from having an instruction manual.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad for the price

Pros: I run two different professional security camera systems as part of my IT job, so I am familiar with high-end cameras. I have to say that this system isn't bad for the price. I have to agree with most of the statements made by other reviewers on NewEgg. The camera mounts need improving. The IR beam is too focused, although you can control the intensity. The operating system is actually pretty good but it has some quirky features. For example, in playback mode, you can only view one camera. I would like to view all the camera, even if 1/4 screen, so I can see all the action at once.

Cons: The big disappointment is the alerting feature. It is really not controllable. The cameras seem alert on EVERYTHING, including foggy mist. We put these on the property to survey intruders. It would have been fun to get alerts on "animal intruders" during the night, but there are so many unnecessary alerts that you really just need to sit and scan in fast-forward mode through a whole evening to catch anything. And as mentioned above, you can only scan one screen at a time so finding interesting events is next to impossible. We are also not relying on this system to alert us of serious events like human intruders because it is too difficult to tune. There is a beep alert on the box, but it was going off constantly and my wife asked me to turn it off.

Other Thoughts: Despite all negatives, this system is pretty good for $350. We move the cameras to look at different locations. We found we have a serious rat problem at night in the grape vines and by watching their activity,we also discovered the best ways and places to trap them. Sorry rats. For us, getting rid of the vermin makes this camera system worth the price.

3 out of 5 eggsWorkable at best

Pros: Low power consumption (less than 20 watts with 2 active cameras). Everything worked out of the box. Camera resolution is adequate to me. The video record files are pretty small in size (3-10MB dependin on the length).

Cons: The whole system is inconsistent. It almost feels like they mixed and matched different parts. To me, that is an alarming signal that it's not going to be very functional.

Kludgy and confusing interfaces all around. The zviewer PC program can connect remotely to the NVR controller for live video but cannot view video playback/pre-recorded stuff. The web interface for the NVR controller can play back videos. The tree for the devices -- when you're connected to the NVR and it shows each channel, clicking into each device doesn't actually present that device's settings. You need to add every camera in order to manage it's 'remote settings'. So, the NVR controller doesn't actually give you access to all the camera settings.

Tons of issues with the zsight and zviewer programs as far as the mobile phones are concerned. I have had no luck connecting either program to my NVR or cameras. I have my lan and camera system on different vlans but entering in static IPs do not work for as far as detecting/scanning/adding the cameras into the mobile applications go.

E-mail alerts do not work even though the TEST button from the controller works fine.

Authentication is all over the place. There's a 'local' login for the Zviewer installed onto your PC. Then, there's remote settings for the NVR/cameras you're connecting to.

You're probably better off using the NVR controller as nothing more than a POE switch for the cameras and setup a standalone PC with blueiris or the like to manage the cameras.

Their support website as far as the NVR series goes is non-existent. You can find the manuals and nothing else about a firmware update for the NVR system. Worse yet, all the help/faqs look to be community written -- which is shoddy at best.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

I wanted to address some of your concerns about the software. The Zviewer PC software will playback video if you are on the same network as the NVR. For remote playback you can use the IE interface.

The system is not designed to operate over VLANs. If you have a secured VLAN then you will need to port forward to get the mobile application to work. If you do this, you will need to use the mobile application Zviewer.

Can you check that the email alerts are not going to your spam folder? Also, make sure the the motion detection setting is configured correctly.

We are continuing to improve our resources and documentation for our newer products. I recommend checking our knowledge base at kb.zmodo.com for new articles and informational videos.

We are here to help you! If you have any other questions, please email us at support@zmodo.com. You can also call us Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 866-551-6881.

1 out of 5 eggsI RETRACT MY EARLIER REVIEW

Pros: see previous review

Cons: NEW: bad parts, support a joke

Other Thoughts: I earlier reviewed this product as very good. UPDATE: I'm not going to take away from the good I mentioned, but...

Less than 3 weeks after receiving the product the power supply has died. I've got 120V in, nothing out.

No problem, right? That's what warranties are for. WRONG.

This is an entire system. I've got cameras mounted on the roof of my house, wiring run throughout the attic, an hour of configuration on the devices. I tried to contact Newegg about getting just the power supply replaced and I was directed to a FAQ that said I have to return absolutely everything that shipped with the product. I'm looking at hours and hours of disassembling the system, packing it up, and then re-configuring and re-installing the new system, all for a power supply. I can't justify that.

So I tried to contact Zmodo. Tried. I tried to fill out the RMA form online. It said I would have to contact tech support to get a case # first. I contacted tech support. They said I would have to contact the RMA department first. I tried to contact the RMA department. They said I would have to talk to tech support first. A big circle. I was getting nowhere with them.

I finally realized my only choices were 1) hours of work to disassemble & re-assemble the entire system for the sake of one little part or 2) I'm on my own.

So now I have a three hundred dollar system that is dead as a hammer and of absolutely no use to me at all until I can track down a replacement power supply on my own dime.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Valued Customer,

Please contact us directly so that we may help you resovle this issue. We can be reached Monday through Friday 8 am to 8pm CST at 866-551-6881 or by email at newegg-support@zmodo.com. We will be able to get your information to create a RMA to get you a new power supply for you system. Along with you contact infomation we will also need you Newegg invoice to help complete the RMA process.

Thank you for your feedback,
Zmodo Sales and Support

4 out of 5 eggsGood value

Pros: Solid build quality, intuitive software, easy update, wide FOV out of the box, system-in-a-box lacks nothing,

Cons: Not quite as user friendly as claimed, poor optics performance, not great night performance because IR LEDs are more spot than flood, horrible mount joint.

Other Thoughts: Unboxing: This system is 100% complete - every thing you need to get up and running, right down to drywall anchors and patch cable to your router/switch.

Build quality: The cameras have SOLID bodies. I'm a bit concerned about the seal on the lens end, but not too much. I took a camera apart & discovered it has a motor driven IR filter for day/night use, a plus I didn't expect. Internal PCBs and wiring seems well made - no solder whiskers or blobby hand-made stuff in there.

Software: They claim you don't need to know anything about this stuff to get up and running but I don't think that is true at all. You'd need far better documentation than was given. As an experienced tech I found the software to be intuitive and nearly as feature rich as I would hope, but I don't think a less experienced person would find it so. The on-board software and downloadable software is identical in functionality but not in design so that could lead to confusion. I found the downloadable software to be easier for configuration & setup but the on-board better for video download & playback. On both you could be completely brain dead & accomplish software update/upgrade; it's what all update software should be. All of the above applies to both the NVR and cameras themselves.

Optics: The sensor may be HD but with the low quality optics in front of it the view you get is barely much better than standard 480 line TV cameras. Granted, it IS definitely better, but I was far from thrilled by the improvement. The lens isn't great to begin with, but then the protective glass that goes in front of it was horrible and degraded the image considerably. (The pane of glass seals the body & has an integral glare shield to shield the lens from the intense IR from the adjacent LEDs.) Images look like what happens when I use the "oil panting" filter in Gimp/Photoshop, all splotchy & muddled; no fine definition.

Night: The biggest problem here is the LEDs. They're so directional they're more of a spot light than a flood. The result is there is a big hot spot in the middle of the FOV and you lose everything outside the hot spot to the exposure being dropped and you loose everything that moves into the hot spot that is closer than the background to overexposure. I'm going to disconnect the LED's one one and try to spread the aim on the LEDs of another camera to see what I can do with it. I'll report back.

Mount joint: The swivel joint on the mount - what a peice of carp. It seems completely out of keeping with the quality of the rest of the kit. If they were going to start pinching pennies, this wasn't the place to do it, but they did. It's hard to adjust, hard to take out the lash, irregular so that it is jammed in one place & free floating a degree of rotation later...just shameful. A point of frustration and disgust in an otherwise outstanding package.

2 out of 5 eggsPoor operating system, not recommend

Pros: night vision is acceptable unless fog rolls in. Love the fact it works efficiently over ethernet. Size for the cameras is also well liked. Quality at 720P is awesome on the big screen.

Cons: The operating system that powers this equipment is very poor quality. Just clicking the letters to log in are not immediate and you can tell there is a 1 second lag. you cannot just click each letter and expect it to take. Also the settings dont have enough explanation to each one. There should have been a guide or glossary for what each item or task you can change is. The app for this program doesnt work. I'm a certified computer systems administrator and this was not an easy feat to accomplish. As I type this now I cannot see my cameras remotely. Easy to configure but does not work as described. You can only use Internet Explorer to view the cameras and even at that 5 of my computer and 2 at work all crash repeatedly when trying to launch the control panel. I have changed all security levels and set to open I.E. as Admin and still crashes. Very poor software in my opinion. I love the camera quality but I must suggest you read the review on AAmazon for this and you will see how Zmodo even responded in defense and suggestions to help. Read the review there. I tried to post link but they blocked my link to it. just search for the Zmodo cameras and you cant miss it. nails it right on the head!

I'm still not happy with this product and the whole point was to have the remote option / feature to work. Not just local. The browser crash is ridiculous and excessive.

Other Thoughts: Fix the app. Shouldnt be this difficult. I could only imagine for the non-technical folks how they are struggling with the app.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Joe P.

We apologize for the inconvenience the product has caused you. We here at Zmodo are always looking to update our systems and applications to improve our customers' experience with our products. When viewing from Internet Explorer, please make sure that the IP address of the system is listed in Compatibility View. If the system continually crashes when viewing from the PC, you can try our PC-Zviewer program and view the cameras through software rather than the browser.

Please make sure you are using the most current version of Zsight. Remote access to your phone will work seamlessly through 3 methods. The first method is through UpNP, but this must be enabled on your router. The second method is Peer to Peer, and if this fails, the last method to connect remotely is through our cloud server. If you have any further issues or questions, please contact us at newegg-support@zmodo.com.

Best Regards,
