Your Smartphone Is Now Your Key
With Kevo, all you need is a smartphone to unlock your door. You don't even need to take your phone out of your pocket or purse; just touch your lock, it will recognize your phone and unlock the door. No more fumbling for your keys or memorizing a code... just touch the lock to open.
Compatible with Apple iPhone 4s and 5 only.
No Smartphone? No Problem
The Kevo Fob, included with the lock, offers the same touch-to-open technology and convenience. Leave your fob in your pocket or purse and when you touch the lock, it will be recognized and unlock the door. Additional Kevo Fobs will be available for purchase.
Send an eKey
The key has evolved! Now you can send an electronic key (eKey) to family, friends, or visitors who have a compatible smartphone, so they can use their phone as a key too.
Kevo Mobile App
It all starts with the Kevo mobile app that you can download for free from the Apple store. This app allows you to set up your Kevo lock, send, disable or delete eKeys, as well as manage Kevo fobs
Is Kevo compatible with my smartphone?
Kevo is only compatible with smartphones that support Bluetooth Smart Ready/Bluetooth 4.0 hardware and have an available Kevo app. The Kevo app is currently available for iPhone 4s & 5, as well as the fifth generation iPod touch, third generation or higher iPad and iPad mini. We have plans to support all possible mobile devices. Currently Android 4.3 and Blackberry 10.1 do not fully support all Bluetooth LE features required by Kevo, but we hope they will soon. When they do, we will be ready! You can still enjoy touch-to-open entry with a key fob and migrate to your Android device when available.
Can someone hack into my Kevo lock?
The Kevo lock does not only rely on the built-in encryption available in Bluetooth. Kevo also provides multiple levels of military grade PKI encryption.
What is the battery life?
The Kevo lock operates on 4 AA-batteries and with normal use, the batteries should last for a year before needing replacing. The lock provides multiple low-battery indicators and provides plenty of warning to change batteries. In the event that the batteries are not replaced in time, you will need to use the standard key to unlock the door.
When I'm inside the house, can someone touch the Kevo lock to unlock it from the outside?
No, the Kevo lock has a unique, patent pending feature to detect if the authorized user is inside or outside of the house, so there will be no accidental unlocking from an unauthorized user outside.
How will the Kevo App affect my smartphone battery life?
The Kevo App needs Location Services and Bluetooth to be on, which do use some battery power (you would already be using this if you use other mapping apps or Bluetooth devices). The Kevo App is designed to take advantage of the new ultra-power-efficient Bluetooth Smart Ready Technology, so you shouldn't notice a decrease in your phone's battery life.
What happens if I lose my phone?
Simply log into the Kevo app on another smartphone or into the Kevo web portal and disable or delete any eKeys associated with the lock. You will need to use your Kevo Fob or the standard key to unlock the lock until you retrieve or replace your phone.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: Works as advertised, does its job. Very cool. Software updates have improved the performance. Thanks much Kevo. My kids used to lose keys all the time. They have yet to lose a phone. My littlest one uses a keyfob, which works great as she doesn't have to take it out of her backpack and so she doesn't lose it. Had this about a year and still on first battery for door mechanism, key fob still going strong. Because of my assumption that I could install this without reading the instructions, I had a little trouble doing the install. Had I read the instructions it would have been easy. My bad, but I wonder if others who had trouble read the instructions? Not much harder than putting in a regular door mechanism.

Cons: Its not as fast as the doors on Star Trek, but it is at least as fast as digging keys out of your pocket. And a whole lot easier. And a lot more fun. And it keeps getting faster with each update. A little loud, but considering it has to push a deadbolt in and out, I think it might be hard to make quieter. Not as loud as my microwave for instance. But I have not compared to other similar products.

Other Thoughts: No regrets. Quite the opposite. Would buy another and my brother-in-law who independently got one loves his too.

Pros: Works as promised.

Cons: As with any motorized dead bolt lock, the mechanical alignment of the parts must be perfect. The drive motor does not have enough power to open or close anything but perfect alignment.

1 out of 5 eggsCool BUT...

Pros: If you don't lose your phone you always have your key. Less stuff to care in the pockets.

Cons: Installed two units last November one has already failed.

Occasionally Bluetooth has to be turned off and then back on the phone to be recognized properly.

Periodically you to log back into the app.

1 out of 5 eggsReturned

Pros: Great idea, lots of potential, nerdy.

Cons: Poor execution, low quality parts, defective mechanism, screechy beeps, loud movement.

Other Thoughts: I was excited about this lock and bought one as soon as they were available, but upon receipt and opening the package my excitement quickly dropped after one disappointment followed another. The large "brass" appearing part that faces into the house is painted plastic. That immediately put me off, but I said "ok I'll still give it a try" despite worrying that a simple scratch from a car key or frequent contact might reveal the plastic over time. Next I took out the directions and read them carefully. Step one... my second disappointment. The bolt mechanism is intended to extend for longer reaches, yet mine stuck halfway in the 180 degree rotation required. Upon inspection it almost seemed as if someone had damaged it or it was poorly manufactured. Nothing I tried would move it to the full extension as shown in videos. Worried I might be doing something wrong, I went to the hardware store and bought a replacement... which worked. So I had a defective (or poorly screened refurbished) part that was a show-stopper. Determined to give this thing a fair try, I continued with the replacement Kwikset bolt assembly. Everything was coming together, despite some "why would they do that?" moments, like jamming sensitive wires very near moving parts. I got everything working, then was greeted by an unpleasant beep (is a pleasant beep that difficult to create?) and very loud mechanical operation of the bolt mechanism. Kinda takes away some of the "cool" factor. The fob worked, then I went to download the phone app and saw seas of unhappy app users. That was the final straw. This is my front door - I wanted something to make ingress and egress quicker, not a hassle. I'll be looking elsewhere.

4 out of 5 eggsIt's tricky!!

Pros: If you already have a Kwikset lock already in place, this is a breeze to install. Actually, as long as you have the door already drilled this was a breeze to install. It comes with different size screws in case your door may be thicker. Installation went fine, I had some problems aligning it, I'm not sure why. I think I was distracted by other stuff going on in the house. It didn't sit flush against the door so I had to redo it. Programming it was even easier once everything was complete.

Cons: Huge con, once you put a battery in something without a plastic protector, you begin to drain it. This is exactly what happened when I attempted to use the FOB included in the box. Fortunately I have my iPhone which is the primary device I planned on using. I spent about five minutes going nuts with the FOB until I opened it up and went "oh, maybe the battery is just dead." I went out and got a new one and it fixed the trick. So I spent a few extra bucks than I should have, other than that it works fine now.
