The Slingbox lets you put your TV shows onto the Internet so you can watch them anywhere. The Slingcatcher does the opposite: it hooks up to your TV and lets you watch digital content from your Slingbox, your computer, or from the Internet.
Compatible with standard and high definition TVs, the Slingcatcher lets you sit in your easy chair instead of your computer chair, and watch digital video over your LAN. Ever saw a video you wanted to share with everyone, but they couldn't all crowd around the computer to see it? Send it to your regular TV, then. How about that trailer for the latest movie? Kinda hard to see on your computer monitor? Watch it on your TV instead. Livecasts over the 'Net for special events? Put it on your TV.
We live in a digital age; take advantage of ALL the digital media out there, not just the ones that fit on your DVD player.
Pros: The SlingProjector mode works very well and is extremely easy to use. Setup is a snap. Supports 1080i/p resolutions and the SlingProjector software automatically re-directs audio from your PC. The SlingProjector software also has a "Privacy Mode" that you can click to hide the output while you do stuff on the PC that you don't want send to the remote TV.
Connecting the SlingProjector software to the SlingCatcher hardware was as simple as it could be. I was using the SlingCatcher 5 minutes after I unboxed it.
Although I had bad luck with HDMI audio from the built-in media player, CoAx digital audio worked very well. There are clearly some issues with HDMI audio and A/V file compatibility on this box.
YES, the unit WILL play VIDEO_TS (DVD Rip) directly from a USB Mass Storage Device! However, please be aware that the media player currently in use as of this writing won't let you select or use the DVD menu system. It will, however, play the movie without conversion!
Cons: The built-in media player isn't doesn't support near as many media formats as the SlingCatcher FAQ might suggest. I haven't found one WMA, WMV or MOV file that would play on the built-in media player using an HDMI connection. I can't even make the built-in media player playback a WAV file correctly.
Full-screen video output looks pretty dirty, even at 1080 HDMI. Apparently they know about this and are working to adjust it.
The SlingCatcher leaves the USB ports powered-on when the device is "off". Tsk, Tsk...
Other Thoughts: There is a significant amount of "magic" within the SlingCatcher. It is sure to impress most people. However, I'm disappointed that SlingMedia didn't provide a more comprehensive list of the supported filetypes / CODECs / Bitrates in the FAQ. The good news is that even if the built-in media player doesn't work, the projection software does, so you can play it on your PC where it is properly supported and just stream it over to your SlingCatcher that way instead.

Pros: None.
Cons: Does not work, freezes and does not have advertised capability of streaming video from internet to your tv, in my case, a HD 1080i via, sling turbo port; wireless linksys N or via Ethernet connection. Using the Sling port initially, it connected to my network with security adjustments however it could not stream, only at 800kbps (very slow moving picture and sound not matching the picture) it would then freeze completely and lose picture and would need to be power cycled just to regain any picture. The next step was an attemp to connect it to the wireless network using N speed, got a Linksys bridge (per adice from Sling media tech) and that didn't work at all. Final attempt was done using wire, and that worked for a few minutes and just finally when a sigh of relief, it would drop from 8000-9k kbps it would freeze again at around 300kbps no picture etc... The flash aspect didn't work either and would not pick up on the media I had on the device.
Other Thoughts: THANK YOU NEWEGG FOR YOUR EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE and helping me with this product (its return)!!! I was shocked with the poor quality of this device. The remote is strange as well, nothing nice about the design (saw a blog claiming it was good). You won't be able to find one button on this junky remote and it doesn't "feel comfortable in your hand" like some claim, what Bissh they are feeding people. It does not have anything to do with my equipment it was all P4 extreme duo 2, 4 gigs of ram, another 512 megs of graphics (extreme card as well) a physics cards, sound, etc.. Fully capable of running their downloadable software; the internet was uninterrupted, could watch the streams on the computer; even ran a test with a downloaded clip off of the BMW USA site (their awesome record track time with the new M3) that froze as well (because it last more than 5 minutes, which is what the sling catcher can handle). Don't waste your time with this, or your money.

You got it right?
Cons: This IS NOT a plug&play gear as the manufacturer claims to be. I connected it as per the user's manual. Installed software. Fire it up and nothing. I troubleshooted my home network, Firewall, reinstalled. Tried on different PC's with different OS's I did every little thing you can think of just to end up with frustrations. Tech support NEVER replied to my inquiries. This is plain garbage to the fullest extent of the meaning of the word. Save some trouble and stay away from this company. They are nothing but scammers!
Other Thoughts: Honestly, you're better off using online tv streaming.

Pros: The company has a good marketecture and the features sound very promising. If it works, it is a cool technology for frequent travelers or those living aboard thirsting for American television
Cons: The product doesn't even come close to the feature promises. First there is stability issue with the older HDTV ready TVs. Even though my Panasonic works great with any other HDTV device, SC can only be set to standard definition or it flickers. Second, the video freezes every 5-20 minutes making the SC not really watchable. This is a well known issue and SC support hasn't been able to resolve it for months now since I first opened the ticket 3 months ago. The remote control is unable to be customized to match your actual HDTV box remote, so important features like skip ahead 30 seconds won't work on it which is a terrible annoyance when watching streaming TV where there is a delay in fast forwarding, etc. Finally, I have lots of media sources and SC will only play certain media files under certain compressions/video size/framerate/etc. About 1/20 of my videos worked if I am lucky. Stay away from this alpha product and go with a small netbook with Tversity or appleTV
Other Thoughts: Sling exhibited every sign of a poorly executed company and the last straw was when tech support told me that they only provide live tech support for 90 days and after that, it is $30 even though in three months they never were able to resolve any of my issues stated above that would make the product usable. Yes, even though I opened the ticket three months ago, they won't take those tickets to closure because it is now passed the 90 days. How silly? Also, there is a converter for all your media files which advertises that it might be able to convert your media to SC compatible files. It wasn't a good solution for me since my existing media are already optimized for my playstation 3, AppleTV, and other media center devices. SC is the only device they don't work on and I am certainly not going to maintain two separate 500GB media libraries. Finally, the slingplayer on your computer works great and doesn't share any of the same issues.

Pros: Does what it claims Has SMB support Has no problem spinning up my 2.5 HDD Can stream using very little bandwidth
Cons: still no ISO support. Loves VOB, but who uses that to backup?
Other Thoughts: to update my posting from 1/11/2009 8:34:02, the SlingCatcher can open network shares!! Not sure about others but SMB works well. GREAT product overall
