Solid unit for knowledgeable people interested in making good recordings

white Reviewed By: Maverick on 7/29/2009

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: The unit does exactly what Panasonic says it will when used with the recommended media. The user manual needs to be fully read, but it is thorough concerning every use and feature. Has no belts to break and destroy VCR tapes - solid state computerized drives. It can compress data to have recordings fit lower capacity media disks or VCR tapes. Easily makes disk recordings that are compatible on any machine capable of reading the media used. I've had a number of VCRs through the years and optical computer drives, and I could only be happier than I am if this one did Bluray. This is a fantastic unit for the price. I wish I had gotten mine from New Egg instead of the added $30 I had to pay - but it was still worth the extra cash I had to pay. Has Viera if you have a compatible Panasonic Viera TV - that's just a feature that lets both units communicate settings info with each other using a HDMI cable. You might want to turn it off in the menu as I did with my New Egg Sharp Aquos 1080P TV.
Cons: Requires a good digital signal from braodcasters for the clock autoset feature to work, but it does work perfectly with a good signal. The user needs to purchase the correct media and be smart enough to make any needed menu adjustments before recording. Doesn't do Bluray recordings or true HD recording and playback. If you think this is for those only accustomed to a simple VCR, think again. This is a high-end product, and as such requires some study of the manual and use of the proper media to become proficient in its proper operation. Doesn't record at speeds higher than for normal viewing. Doesn't have the code feature, like was found in TV guides that older VCRs were compatible with for finding Off-Air programs and recording them. Can confuse it's computer if you work at pressing all the buttons - can require a re-boot of the unit. Takes a couple of minutes to boot-up using the low power standby state - it is a computer. You can't "rush" changes or the unit will pause momentarily.
Other Thoughts: I have a very good digital signal and my clock is always correct. Unit gives very beautiful sound and crisp pictures. Unit records extremely well and from VCR to DVD. I purchased inexpensive Dual Layer +R media, RW RAM media, DVD +RW and DVD +R media. The unit has had zero problem making copies of my VCR tapes of the exact quality they have. I simply use the correct media for what I wish to record, and I've been rewarded with excellent copies. The unit is just intuitive as it should be while making recordings. The tuner programs Digital and Analog channels easily. Recording Off-Air programs is simple and the menu offers Off-Air show info when provided by the broadcaster. It makes perfect recordings from my DirecTv HD receiver, but at 480P. Can use very little power in standby. I keep mine connected to an APC UPS so power line fluctuations never affect it, just like any computer. Changing tuner channels or functions takes only a moment, but you shouldn't try to hurry changes.

Nice Solid Unit, but has some Quirks

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Solid Panasonic quality. Handsome unit (looks nice). Great Remote with large buttons. Very comprehensive manual. Firmware updates available on Panasonic's website.
Cons: Takes over a minute to boot up from being off. Odd quirks in operation of the front panel display. The channel is only displayed when the unit is in VCR mode without a tape. No clock on display unless unit is turned OFF. When copying VHS to DVD, the unit will not allow you to use it's internal digital tuner to watch TV at the same time. :-(
Other Thoughts: I did a lot of research, evidently most of the comparable units from other manufacturers have design problems too... this unit seemed to have the fewest complaints and best reliability. I also have an older model Panasonic VHS/DVD recorder.. 3 years old and still working great & going strong!

Panasonic comes through again

Tech Level Tech Level: high - Ownership: more than 1 year
Pros: -The higher quality S-video input terminals are really nice. Many recorders only have the lower quality composite (yellow) video input terminals.

-VP (Very long Play) mode for VHS tapes. EP mode: 3× as long as SP, VP mode: 5× as long as SP. Yes, you can record TEN hours of video on a typical T-120 tape. My T-180 tape, when using VP mode, can hold more than 15 hours of running time on it! (VP quality is not terrible, but not very good either. And playback of VP recordings can only be done on this unit.)

-FR (Flexible Recording) is really cool. The device fits the recording perfectly onto one disc at the highest possible quality. (e.g. A 3-hour recording with FR will fit perfectly onto one disc. Although it won’t look as good as SP, it will look better than LP.)

-HDMI output. ‘Nuff said.

-The manual, while large, is VERY good. It is very descriptive and well-organized.

-Remote. Lots of buttons, but it’s actually pretty easy to use. I can control the unit even from 50ft aw
Cons: -Can’t record digital programming to tapes (at least directly). But I knew that was the case. Have to record to DVD first, then do the DVD-to-VHS thing.

-LP mode for tapes. While it can *play* VHS tapes recorded in LP on other equipment, it cannot *record* tapes in LP. (Hmph. I kinda liked LP.)

-Operation can be kinda sluggish, especially at start-up (assuming you turn it off when not using it). Just have to be patient with it.

-DivX movies on a CD. Fast-forwarding and rewinding through DivX movies can cause the audio to fall behind the video.

-Doesn’t play HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray discs or cook my pancakes in the morning. Hmm. Maybe that’s why I got this thing at such a good price. (lol!)
Other Thoughts: Pros continued: (I exceeded the 1000-character limit above)

-Digital (ATSC) tuner. Don’t want the hassle of having to connect an auxiliary digital converter box to a VCR or DVD recorder to record over-the-air programs after the digital switch? This thing will do the trick by itself. It’s practically a converter box, VCR, and DVD recorder (plus a few more things) all in one.

*I am actually reviewing a DMR-EZ475VK model, a very close relative to the DMR-EZ48VK. The unit and remote look exactly alike and they operate the same way, except the model I have doesn’t have the USB input. :( Oh well.

I recently switched to cable (yes, it can work like a cable box) and when I did the automatic channel search, this unit found a few channels I probably shouldn’t be getting for free. ;)

Great product. I’ve had mine for about a year and I still seem to find something new about it every once in a while. I have yet to find something made by Panasonic that disappoints me.
