Sony offers a lovely home theatre/receiver/DVD combo in this compact design.

Not only is it a grand sound system, it's also an AM/FM receiver (10 AM pre-sets, 20 FM pre-sets) with a DVD player. The 5.1 channel sound uses five high fidelity satellite speakers and a bass speaker that houses the amplifier as well. Auto-calibration makes setup less of an arcane art and more of a pleasure. Power draw is 130 Watts when in operation and a very green 0.3 Watts in stand-by mode. And at only 3.5 cm, the satellite speakers can be amazingly inconspicuous.

I don't know your budget or your tastes, so I can't tell you “This is the one for you!” I can say that if you decide it is for you, we probably have the best price on it. So do your homework and decide. We'll be right here when you get done.

2 out of 5 eggsSony DAV IS10

Pros: Cable management is good. Small speakers and a powerful sub is good and ideal for people who are in an apartment where space is limited. Sounds fairly well. Its loud enough for its size. The looks are initialy impressive.

Cons: Sound quality will be less appreciated if you use it as a Karaoke system. Its because the sound quality of the small speakers cannot deliver the full range of the person vocal chords when singing through a microphone like Magic Mic.
I wish it has an extra input. I was disappointed to find out that I cannot use it as a speaker system for my PC. The LCD display looks so very simple. How I wished it has some form of running lights or VU meters and some eye candies that are available on some components. I paid almost $700. I hesitate to take it but my wife forced me to buy it. One more thing... this unit is almost impossible to use without the remote control. The main unit doesnt have sufficient buttons for you to operate it but it relies extremely on the remote control and thats why dont loose that remote control.

Other Thoughts: I wished this was built to have several extra audio inputs and video inputs. The touch buttons are nice to have but its only for play, stop, and volume.

3 out of 5 eggsSony DAV-IS10

Pros: Attractive design, small footprint, quick and easy setup. Sound quality was better than expected given the size of the speakers.

Cons: Few input options, system is lacking in the mid and low range frequencies. System bricked after about 3-4 hours of use.

Other Thoughts: My wife and I are not audiophiles, so this system was purchased with the minimalist decor of our living room in mind. It really looks nice, and does not command attention like the dated Kenwood home theater it replaced. Setup was quick and easy, and I really enjoyed the fact that it used a microphone (included) to calculate the distances of the speakers for optimization. We do not use the DVD function of this system since we are using a PS3 for playback of Blu-Ray discs. My biggest complaint was the fact that the unit ceased to function after about 3-4 hours of use on the second day of ownership. The price of this unit is quite low for the features, and I am optimistic that I simply received a bad unit. Wall brackets are included for the speakers and I would suggest using them since the speakers are so small.

Pros: Aesthetics of the system is great, very sleek glossy service on receiver and top of subwoofer/mid-range unit. Can easily control ipod using remote control (though can't fast forward through song list, or at least I haven't figured it out yet). Speakers are quite inconspicuous. Set up is very very easy.

Cons: Sound quality is quite poor, though for the sales price I got mine for I couldn't complain too much. Main issue is the mid-range all come from the subwoofer/mid-range unit. The small speakers produce no appreciable resonance/depth. Because of this, placement of the subwoofer unit is crucial (must be placed between the front speakers, yet not be behind the TV otherwise mid-range will be obstructed). The subwoofer is also not very powerful and will not come anywhere close to vibrating your body. The speakers, however, have NO issues with clarity. Some recommend better speaker wires than the stock ones, however you must have knowledge on splicing wires (since the stock wires are physically attached to the speakers). Also, if the remote ever breaks, system would be very difficult to use since there are only a few function buttons on the receiver unit.

Other Thoughts: Overall, for what I paid I am somewhat satisfied with this system. However if you want to appreciate your music at all, the lack of richness provided by this system will not satisfy your ears. It is decent for movies, but this too is very dependent on speaker placement (can't place front and center speakers too close together, otherwise it sounds like people are echoing, particularly when using system for TV shows).

5 out of 5 eggsVery nice system

Pros: Small speakers, very easy setup. Compared to other systems, the sound is far superior to most in its price range. I spent two days traveling to various stores to actually listen to the units. The sound on the DAV-IS10 is just as good more expensive systems.

iPod accessory is nice - doesn't work great with the iPhone, but with iPods it provides an on-screen display for navigating song lists with the remote.

Cons: The sub woofer is a bit big, but manageable. As noted in the other reviews, the unit lacks some input options and the DVD does not upscale to 1080p.

Other Thoughts: My setup:

Sharp Aquos 32" 1080p
Sony PS3 (for Blu-Ray)
Sony DAV-IS10

I can safely say I'm very happy with the setup as a whole and especially the DAV-IS10.

I would highly recommend this unit if:
1. The limited input options don't pose a huge obstacle,
2. You're either connecting another high def DVD player (Blu-ray) or don't mind only 1080i and not 1080p.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Good sound and easy to setup. Speakers are tiny.

Cons: The lack of inputs.

Other Thoughts: As noted in the other review, 1080i upscaling. The input "problem" is pretty easily fixed by running the inputs through your TV and then the output of the TV to the unit.

It's not perfect, and it costs a lot more than it should, but it's not a bad solution for those who like all in one units.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Value But This Is A Dated System

Pros: Sound quality is excellent for both surround sound and music. The iPod interface is pretty straightforward and works well with the remote.

Cons: This is an older model that upscales to 1080i not 1080p. Also understand that the DVD player is a integral component and as such the system is useless without it. Also expandability is very limited there is no direct connection inputs other than from your TV. If you add a BD player to your system you'll need to connect it directly to your TV using the TV's spidf output to get surround sound while watching BD. There is no Bravia Link (not a issue if you're not using a Sony TV).

Other Thoughts: This is an excellent system but be aware that it upscales DVD's to 1080i NOT 1080p. If 1080p is important to you then you may want to consider Sony's DAV-IS50 system. If you want more inputs, wireless rear and/or remote speakers, and upgradability then you may want to consider Sony's HT-IS100 System.
