Incredible Screen
- Pros: As a portable player, this one is just about like veryone else - controls work fine, plays all kinds discs (including dual layer with full coverage CD labels), starts up rapidly.... you know, it's a darn good DVD player. But there is one HUGE advantage of this player: amazingly sharp display. The screen resolution is much higher than other portable players. DVD's look beautiful on this screen. Unlike any other player, this includes contrast, color, and background light level adjustments.
- Cons: The player is a little bit noisy. If you rotate the player around so the screen is facing you (complex to describe, easy to do with the player after you do this 5 times), then the spinning DVD noise is away from you and somewhat shielded. The hinge looks like it could break in children's hands - I wouldn't want to drop it on the screen when it's extended. Battery life is OK - with headphones, very easy to get 2-3 DVD's. With the speaker, 2 DVD's is the limit (about 3-3.5 hours). The touch controls are weird - you need a bit of room light to work them, I'd rather have real buttons.
- Other Thoughts: This is an absolute gorgeous player. It beats out Panasonic players with that screen. I've owned 5 other portable players - all Panasonics. I like Panasonic's menus and controls better. But the screen on this machine beats anything around.
The screen size - give me a break, this is well near the perfect size. Larger screen, and why not just use a laptop? The form factor of this player is very close to a netbook. In fact the best carrying cases are those designed for netbooks - get a sleeve or a netbook carrying case.
Good sturdy player
- Pros: Very sharp and high quality screen. Can be viewed at almost 45 degrees without distortion. Sound is acceptable but not that great. Controls are logical and easy. Plays all kinds of stuff like JPGs amd music from MP3. Sturdy enough as it survived a few drops from 2 feet high to hardwood floor and when that happens the large battery pack on the bottom comes loose! Battery life is about 2-3 DVD movies. Has battery charge indicator on-screen.
- Cons: Screen size is not that great. Some manufacturers are offering 10" wide screens so why cant Sony?
- Other Thoughts: A nice product indeed.
