1 out of 5 eggsBad Design

Pros: If you want low end technology, this is it.

Cons: HDMI inputs do not carry sound, you must add an additional Coax or optical cable from your input device. All-around functionality is very limited on this model.

Other Thoughts: Not what I would expect from Sony. HDMI without sound is absurd. This, by the way, is not mentioned in the manual, and had to be confirmed with Sony tech support.

5 out of 5 eggsRainization

Pros: Pretty decent Receiver. Now I can link TV, PS2, DVD player, PC, Speaker together and it works perfectly.

Cons: Limited Functions and Confusing indicators

Other Thoughts: Newegg rocks, fast shipping as always. This is my very first receiver. I guess it might be one of the reason I was so frustrated when I tried to hook up all the wires together.

5 out of 5 eggsUnderstand what you are getting!!

Pros: Great sound, does a solid job

Cons: Limited functionality.

Other Thoughts: Figure out what this model does not have and see if you need it or not. If not, then save your $$ and get this model, which has amazing sound, but not every fancy gadget.

Yes, it lacks component to HDMI conversion, 1080p upscaling, or that fancy thing where the display is superimposed on your video, or the capability to distinguish between good and outrageously expensive speakers. If you want those features, spend 500+ on a receiver.

However, if you are looking for a simple surround sound setup, with great sound, then this is perfect. And cheap.

What I do is have a digital audio output from my TV, and then I turn the TV / Receiver on concurrently. Simple, and that's all I need.

1 out of 5 eggsNo HDMI Repeating on this Model

Pros: n/a

Cons: This model doesn't meet my needs. I want the audio decoded and played through the receiver from the HDMI sources. As other have stated -- I should have read their reviews -- this model only contains a HDMI switch or pass-through meaning that you will have to use an additional TOSLINK or coax cable from your sources to hear audio through the receiver.

Other Thoughts: This may be a good receiver, but if you want only HDMI cables between your components, then you need to pass on this one. You need to find a model that has a HDMI "repeater".

3 out of 5 eggsCheap and Cheap

Pros: This receiver is okay considering the price. The sound was really good using the Fiber Optic cable (Toslink). Very basic options ( that could be a pro or con ). This receiver's design is simple and looks decent that will complement any home theater system.

Cons: First off the center channel did not work properly. The channel was cutting on and off casuing popping sounds and distortion. I thought it was my speaker, so I tried different speakers and all my testing lead to the same conclusion. Volume was not loud enough. I set it up in my small 10'x15' room at near max volume to get audible decibels. No sound through HDMI, so I had to purchase the Toslink cable. Last; I hated the sound options. I was only able to set pre-set sound options. No tweaking options on the sound was the worst feature I dis-liked.

Other Thoughts: Conclusion: The price is cheap, but so are some of the options. I'd gave this receiver 3 eggs because even thought the center channel was bad, the sound was very exceptional using the Toslink cable, for a low cost receiver. My main concerns with this receiver was sound adjusting capabilities and total output power. I've seen this receiver from $150 to $200, so the price is not bad.

2 out of 5 eggssent it back

Pros: unbelievably low price -- it is hard to believe they can make something this quality for this price.

I knew that an extra cable is needed to get audio from the HDMI sources, but that is not really a problem.

Cons: Confusing and misleading manual. I had an argument with support over the meaning of several of the phrases.

Very difficult user interface. Knob to switch inputs is quite sensitive, and you have to understand the meaning of cryptic indicators on screen. Remote control is typical: too many buttons with cryptic labels, most of which you will rarely use. Changing inputs required pressing one button a bunch of times to cycle through all possible ... even if you only use three of them.

There is no conversion of video at all in this unit! You must connect all formats: composite, component, and HDMI, if you have sources from composite (we all do), component, and hdmi. When you switch inputs on the unit, you have to then switch inputs on the TV. My whole purpose was to get a unit that was a control center, but this does not meet that need.

No on screen display (of course)

Other Thoughts: In order to make sure that this unit did what I wanted, I downloaded and read the manual. But still I was mislead by the capabilities due to typical lousy Japanese manual which does not explain what it really does.

I wasted four hour trying to get it to work, including 30 minutes with their support, and then packed it back up, and sent it back.

To be honest, maybe I was being a little too cheap, but all I really wanted was a switching center for my video sources and this does not do that. Instead, I need "Video Upconvert" (even though I don't really need any increase in resolution). Took this experience to learn that.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great bang for the buck. Lots of power. Clean sound. I thought that the fact that you could enter the distance of all of your speakers was really cool and you can actually hear the difference when you set that up right. Tons of inputs and outputs for all of your stuff.

Cons: HDMI does not output sound. You MUST get optical cables or digital coax if you want sound out of your HDMI components.

Other Thoughts: I'm sure there are much better receivers out there, but at this price, this one does everything I need.

3 out of 5 eggsAlmost an Antique

Pros: It worked, but not the way I wanted.

Cons: HDMI was limiting as I could not get sound from my DVD player to this unit without a separate cable. It does little more then pass HDMI onto the TV. Spend more money and get a more current receiver.

Other Thoughts: I have had good results with my previous Sony receivers the HDMI limitations were the many reason I returned this unit.

2 out of 5 eggsOk, but.

Pros: Good amp.

Cons: Poor tuner, constant and poor reception. Have to use extra cables for sound. Very basic capabilities.

Other Thoughts: This is the first AVR I have bought. I tried it for 3 weeks then discovered that the Pioneer VSX-519V-K looked like a much better product for about the same price, so I returned the Sony and ordered the Pioneer.

4 out of 5 eggsSony STR-DH500

Pros: Great sound for the price. Unit does exactly what it is designed to do. Power must be on for HDMI passthrough and sound must be a separate digital cable.

Cons: None so far.

Other Thoughts: This unit replaced a STR-DG520 since I needed three HDMI inputs. My 50" flat screen is wall mounted and I could only fit ONE HDMI cable up the conduit. I run a Dell Studio Hybrid HTPC, a Motorola HD box and a DVD, all with HDMI, to the Sony unit. The unit has optical inputs for the Dell and the cable box and a Coax in for the DVD. I turn on the unit with a Logitech remote and everything functions.

Works great for this application.
