Enjoy your movies the way they were supposed to be experienced with 5.1 surround sound. Perfect for your first home theater or an entertainment center in another room, the DAV-HDX589W is the economical solution for luxury sound quality. Immerse yourself as sound pours from a center speaker, subwoofer and four satellite speakers. The two rear floor-standing and wireless satellites eliminate having to track cables across the floor or along walls. You’ll feel every explosion and won’t miss a beat with the 280W subwoofer!
The integrated 5 DVD/CD changer provides a 10-disc resume so you can switch between movies without having to remember where you left off. Image quality is great due to the Precision Cinema Progressive technology that corrects visual artifacts at the pixel level and with the HDMI connection you can watch your videos at 1080p resolution.
The home theater is loaded with extras, like S-AIR Surround Wireless that allows you to expand your speaker system into up to 10 rooms. Listen to MP3s via encoded CDs or attach your MP3 player. Finally, Digital Media Calibration optimizes speaker placement in just 30 seconds. Make the DAV-HDX589W your first home theater and could be the only one you ever need!
DVD player upscales incredibly. Just watched Revenge of the Sith, and it was indistinguishable from a Blu Ray.
Great surround sound quality. Big improvement from my old Panasonic SA-HT740.
Has all the inputs youll likely need.
Comes with an IPod dock, if thats your thing.
Cons: Feels kinda underpowered. You really have to crank it up almost to max to get a good theater sound. And that is worrysome because you arent talking about the biggest speakers.
Proprietary wires. Really Sony, couldnt you just use standard wires? If something happens, youll have to buy new wires from Sony.
Remote is unneccesarily complicated. When you have a button that says Display, a button that says ...Display, and a button that has the secondary function of Display and all three do different things, thats too complicated.
Other Thoughts: Overall I give five stars because this is the best value for the money you will find for a quality home theater system. I would definitely recommend this unit to friends and family, and just anyone who wants quality for a great price.

Great System for the price

Pros: Easy setup, clean, clear sound, lots of functionality, slim speakers, sufficient volume, good balance between all speakers. For the price this system is a great value and sounds great. Wireless rear speakers work great with no static or pops/clicks. Receiver is low profile and fits well in any entertainment center.
Cons: Low-tech LED display, small diameter speaker wires, volume may not be sufficient for very large rooms (my room is 18' wide x 25' long and this system is just right), limited inputs for other devices (i.e. blue ray player, game system, etc.)
Other Thoughts: I would purchase this again in a heartbeat. It is exactly what I wanted. I overcame the limited inputs by utilizing the multiple inputs on my TV for the devices and using an optical audio connection to the surround system.

Sounds great for the price

Pros: I previously installed home theater and audio as a profession, and found myself buying this when it was on sale for my living room. When paired with a wall screen projector and well placed speakers, this system is very dynamic sounding. Not too strong in any one category, balanced. For $330ish the bang for the buck sticks out.
I was surprised to see the iPod dock in the box, I did not know that was part of the system. A good surprise, haven't used it yet, but set it up anyways for future use.
Cons: Coaxial input broke off some time during shipping. Opened the box, pulled everything out and found the threaded input loose on the bottom of the box and an open spot on the back of the DVD receiver where it used to be soldered onto the board/pressed onto the I/O panel. Sony has been great to me all my life, hopefully this was an isolated event.
