5 out of 5 eggsthis thing rocks

Pros: Plays everything i expected it too and looks good. Reads my 1TB external drive no problem. (FAT32)

Cons: Not free?

Other Thoughts: Read the specs before you give something a bad rating. This does everything it says it does. Movies look great on my 56 inch JVC.

3 out of 5 eggsFollowup review, rip process

Pros: Small, good looking, HDMI, nice remote, price.

Cons: limited media formats

Other Thoughts: I've come to accept this for the task I need. It is installed at a vacation home and I have a 16GB USB thumb drive that goes with me back and forth with the family's new/favorite 12 or so movies. Here's the process I use to rip the DVDs: DVDfab6 to vobmerge to Any Video Converter. This makes a mpeg2 file which plays at full resolution on the Sony. I could pay more for an easier rip, but then I could have also paid more for player which supported more formats (mpeg4, H.264). Do you know an easier free rip for this product?

5 out of 5 eggsRate the product for what it is...not what it should be

Pros: A friend of mine has one and its great. Small, sleek. Plays Divx great. His movies look awesome. Get a good Flash Drive and format to FAT32. You wont be disappointed.

Cons: None. It does what it is meant to do and does it well.

Other Thoughts: I cant stand people that rate a product based on what they think it is. Not what it actually is. Read the specs people! It says FAT32 in the specs, no h264 in the specs! Dont trash the product because you were too cheap or lazy to either buy a better one or read.

3 out of 5 eggsOK at the right price

Pros: Small, straight forward UI -- not flashy, but gets the job done, remote controls TV too (Sony CRT type). In fact, the remote is probably the best part of the package. It is much better quality and feel than other devices provide in this price range.

Cons: limited file formats. My routine of DVDfab6 and Handbrake doesn't seem to work except at really low resolution. I'm still looking for an easy rip process to work with this. Motion was jerky, don't know if that was the unit, my file, or my USB stick.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't buy it again for the price I paid (30 bucks), but I would have only netted about 15 if I returned it. It is worth that.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the price! You kidding me?

Pros: Worked great for an in-car video source when the DVD hardware was on the fritz.

- PRICE! $35-ish shipped for a PMP with HDMI out??? Really?
- Compact size
- Handsome little bugger, easy on the eyes
- HDMI Output
- Reads DivX files fine
- No lag experienced (caveat: I'm just using the composite out to go to a 7" in-car system, your mileage may vary if using larger files via HDMI)
- Can store kids' movies on flash drives - no more scratching and replacing DVDs!

Cons: Need to format media to FAT32. Wah wah waaaaaah.
Some file format limitations, but not a ton.

Other Thoughts: I got this unit and picked up a $10 power inverter from Frie'z (use your imagination) and have a < $50 system that now officially pwnz0rz the DVD system in my car.

1 out of 5 eggsroadapathy

Pros: Small, good looking product, low price, menu isn't bad like others say, great quality playback for the files that it WILL play.

Cons: This product needs an update but none found on Sony website. It simply does NOT play many video file formats. That is a huge problem. I really regret not not buying the $100+ off brand product that can use the hard drive. Also, I did not like the remote. It isn't small, sleek, stylish like other Sony remotes. It's big, ugly, feels cheap. :-(

Other Thoughts: This product is great for MP3's. Not bad for pictures, although too slow for me. The videos that DO play are fine. Plays very well. I like it for this. Sony just needs to add new firmware or a different chip to make this guy play all files.

3 out of 5 eggsSony could make it better.

Pros: The video output of 1080p through HD is excellent. The standard remote suitable for Sony TV is awesome which makes it perfect to operate both devices without switching to individual remote.

Cons: It supports only FAT32 format on the external device to it make it very difficult to format your storage especially when your PC/Laptop is on Windows XP/2000 as both do not provide functionality to format the external hard drive of large capacity. I solved the problem by downloading freeware fat32format.exe.
The other prominent issue is that the device doesn't support navigation on movie menu through remote control which is very much possible if you purchase Seagate Freeagent Theatre. It actually doesn't allow to select a particular choice on the movie menu list for example Play movie, Chapters, Subtitles and Special etc.
I contacted the support and they confirmed that they don't have this feature.

Other Thoughts: Sony should extend the features of this device to allow use of NTFS format storage devices, navigation of movie menu and Coaxial digital audio o/p.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: Small, cheap and has a good remote. The remote automatically connects to the Sony Bravia TV. Video playback is excellent through HDMI input.

Cons: USB input is on the front of the unit. its just cosmetic, but the cord to the external hard drive is not as neat and organized as the connections to the tv.
The display showing your file list needs to be updated. it is very easy to navigate and find your media, but it could be a lot better.

Other Thoughts: People have been having problems attaching hard drives to the unit, because it only accepts FAT32 formatting. Both my external hard drives (Western Digital & Samsung) have FAT32 formatting. The only one that doesn't is the one I made myself, because I had to format it myself and I used NTFS.
