5 out of 5 eggsMakes any TV a Smart TV

Pros: This unit is great, it does many things that you would get in a $1500 thing about it is wireless and you get it cheaper than the wireless LAN stick for new Tvs. I have it connected to my NAS system reads all formats that I can throw at it.

Cons: The menu is Sony style( as seen on their smart Tvs and BD players). Which can be little confusing till you familiarize your self with it.

Other Thoughts: Unfortunately did not buy on newegg got it at $50 ( def. buy at that price). I'm happy that this plays avi. As many Sony BD players do not . ..Also to the guy about ISO, should have done more research when looking for something very specific especially with Sony, since they produce movies ... If you understand my point....Would recommend to anyone who is trying to update their capabilities of Tvs w/o breaking the bank... These will even work on ur CRT (tube tv)

2 out of 5 eggsWhat a disappointment!

Pros: Plays from DNLA server(See cons). Full 1080P HD. That's about it.

Cons: Very limited on what file types can be played. No ISO or MKV compatibility. Get with it Sony. MKV is one of the best and most popular video formats and you don't support it. I know mkv gets a bad rap because many movies on file sharing networks are mkv, but the mkv format in my opinion is hands down the best video format to be developed in recent years. Get a WD Live TV. It supports every type of video format I throw at it and the interface is just as good. Skip this Sony junk until they design a decent product.

1 out of 5 eggsIs of No Use to Me

Pros: Solid build, compact
Wireless connection to LinkSys router is reliable

Cons: Does not play ISO files - unlike the less expensive Western Digital units
Does not provide access to NetFlix in Costa Rica - my service of choice
Manual is of little help.
Slow to respond to commands
I find the menuing system to be painfully cumbersome

Other Thoughts: I bought this over a year ago. I chose Sony because I thought it would be better than the cheaper WD units (which will play ISO files). Instead, I do not use the device at all except to occasionally check to see if Sony has added NetFlix to their menu choices. I would not have purchased this unit if I had known that it does not allow NetFlix (at least not in Costa Rica) nor the ability to view my movie collection (all my DVD's are ripped to ISO files). Instead, I receive NetFlix on my computer and feed it to my TV over a 30 foot HDMI cable.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: HD up to 1080.
Support Amazon Instant video which is free to Prime members.

Cons: Slow to start video playback. It can take up to 1min to play movies after you press the play button. This happens in Netflix and movies on USB.
MP4, MKV not supported via DLNA. (I changed the suffix from mp4 to AVI, and some videos can be played via DLNA though, how strange)

Other Thoughts: Compared with Apple TV, the in an out of the player look crude.
Its strength over Apple TV should be more open, with multiple format and DLNA support, but these good stuff is prepared by a "poor chef" and we got a not so tasty food.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product, needs a little extra setup

Pros: It utilizes almost all internet T.V. services, including Netflix and plays them flawlessly.

It can turn on my desktop remotely.

It can use my android phone and itouch as a remote control.

It can even stream MKV's over the network from my desktop, but there is a catch! See the cons section.

It's $50 (half the price of an apple TV)

Cons: In order to stream MKV's over the network (bypass having to use the USB drive), you will have to install Serviio 6.0.1 or newer on your desktop. Just open the main console, find "Media Player," and choose SMP-100 in the drop down menu. This will transcode your video files on the fly so that your sony player can play them. Make sure you select to use all of your processor cores (it defaults to 1). I have an intel Q8200 and while transcoding, it runs at about 45% duty on all 4 processors.

After you set it up, everything works great.

Other Thoughts: If you are willing to go to a little extra setup effort, this is definitely the best player for $100 or less.

5 out of 5 eggsJust love this little device!

Pros: After reading some of the other reviews, I gave this little gme a try. For $49.99 on Newegg, I figured what the heck, and scooped up 2; one for our room and one for our boys' room.

Setup was a breeze; used the WiFi connection on both. My home is setup with two wireless bands powered by multiple Rosewill RNX-N4PS IEEE 802.11b/g/n (Newegg Item# N82E16833166039). One band for the boys, one band for our stuff. Both went up on the network in a snap, I'd say less than 10 minutes. They both downloaded and installed updates, and that was it; DONE!

Make sure you have your laptop with you, so you have easy access to a web browser for things such as linking to Netflix, Hulu+, Pandora, etc.

We've been using both devices for about 2wks now, and they work perfectly; Netflix, Hulu+, Pandora, YouTube, not to mention all the media available on my file-server via Serviio and DLNA.

For such an excellent price and a small footprint, this thing really blows other devices away!

Cons: The only problem we've had is trying to decide what to watch! LOL

That, and I should have bought a third one for the family room! :)

Other Thoughts: Once Newegg gets another shipment of these things, assuming the price is right, I'll be buying at least one more, :)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat so far

Pros: I bought this on a whim (black Friday/Clearance item at a Meijer). I haven't had much time to play with it but I'm impressed with the speed and quality over the network. Setting up was incredibly easy.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I have a Cisco wireless router and the unit wouldn't access online content under a "guest" access to my network. It would give me "incorrect server response" errors. It worked once I connected under normal access with security keys inputted.

5 out of 5 eggsFREAKING AWESOME!!!

Pros: Got it on sale for $50 at another place. SORRY - NewEgg!!! Can't believe Sony sells it for UNDER $100.00. It's WAY BETTER than the WD model. It's about as big as a Portable DVD Player & comes with an HDMI Out, RGB Video Out, & Component Video (Y/Pb/Pr) Out. Along with a standard Audio Out (L & R Stereo), & Optical Audio Digital Out. It also has a USB Port on the front so you can watch pictures or listen to songs. It automatically updates itself as soon as you hook it up to the Internet - NEAT & HANDY! For features it has:

VIDEO - My MediaSmart Server, Video Unlimited, Video On Demand, Hulu Plus, Netflix, NHL Vault, YouTube,, Dr Oz, Yoga For Everyone, Billabong, XOS College Sports, Wired,,, CinemaNow,, Michael Jackson, SGNL, Dailymotion, uStudio, GolfLink,,, Flixster, Podcasts, & MORE!

AUDIO - My MediaSmart Server, Music Unlimited, Slacker, NPR Radio & MORE!

Cons: I REALLY CAN'T THINK OF ANY!!! BOTH INSTALLATION & SETUP WAS SUPER EASY! It plays SO MANY formats (BOTH Audio & Video) it would take up TOO much space for here.

Sorry about that.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, so far I have been having SO MUCH FUN playing with this darn thing that I haven't really had a chance to try out the USB Features yet. According to the manual, you can hook up either a USB ThumbDrive OR a USB Hard Drive to it. When I FINALLY quit having fun & try it out I'll let you know. But seeing as HOW FEW PROBLEMS I have had with this unit I rather tend to believe their claims.

I talked to a Sony Rep & he told me Sony has discontinued THIS Model (ANOTHER DUMB IDEA) & has replaced it with another one (the SMP-N200 - I think) & THAT one has FEWER FEATURES than this one (AND COSTS MORE). Take it from me - IF you can STILL find one of these units - BUY IT!!! You won't be sorry!!!

4 out of 5 eggsWorks better than anticipated

Pros: DLNA certified, Remote that works with TVs to control volume and inputs (can use just one remote to control this box and TV) and virtual remote that you can download for free to work with smartphone (gain access to a QWERTY keyboard to search for content. Streams content smoothly straight from Win 7 Pro media center computer. USB port that supports many file formats DivX HD (Impressive! just check sony's website for specifics) that also works with external hard drives. HDMI port, old school RCA composite video and sound connections, Optical audio out, Component gun output, Wifi N (and previous versions of Wifi) along with ethernet port if you prefer to use it. The flexibility of this box is fantastic.

Cons: Has just about every plug on the back except for DVI, VGA, and S Video. Wifi only uses the 2.4ghz N band and not the 5ghz band. Some file types will only play on the USB and not over the network (See sony's site for specifics). I just dedicated an External hard drive to the device to be hooked up all the time. I haven't been able to get MKV or VOB files to play over the network but have been able to get them to play over USB. Sony interface this is a very slight con... I would like it to be a little smoother but was still impressed. The interface isn't going to be as smooth as say Apple TV, but it still works well just takes some time getting used to it. The box is very unattractive to me. I thought Sony could at least make it a little more friendly looking without sacrificing connections than just being a squareish box. But I would rather have all those connections than a nice pretty box. All depends on what you need.

Other Thoughts: The Wifi router you decide to use is crucial to any of these devices. I have heard of some people having stuttering from this device. I am using a Netgear WNDR3700 router with this box and don't have any problems and the internet connection connected to that router is only 6mbps down.... up doesn't matter with this device. My advice would be to use a DLNA certified router and you should be okay. I purchased this just to play with it and it has proved to be a fun device to use. I have taken it with me on trips and plugged it into hotel networks and their TV and had my Netflix with me. Some devices are only good because they have a service. Even if you don't have Netflix or Huluplus you can still make great use of this device. Works fantastic with AVI Files. I have a huge library of AVI files that are in my Media Center Folders on my computer and with this device I can watch those videos right over the network. Plus the quality is really great.
