1 out of 5 eggsStay away from this unit.

Pros: It turns on and has no problems recording using the VCR section of the unit.

Cons: After 5 months of very light use, the unit broke down. Since it was out of the labor warranty it cost 100 dollars to repair. Besides the DVD section breaking down it will not record the entire length of a regular TV show broadcast. I followed the JVC representative's advice and used the specific DVD-R and RW brands recommended and it is still only recording a portion of TV shows and then turning off.

Other Thoughts: JVC told me that it has to do with copy protection signals sent out by the cable company. I spoke to my cable company and they confirmed that they are not flagging any regular TV shows, (standard definition broadcasts), such as the ones that I was trying to record on ABC, NBC, FOX, etc. So who am I to believe when a different brand DVD recorder that I have is having no problems whatsoever recording these same shows no matter what types of discs I use. I regret purchasing this unit and even paying for the repairs. I should have purchased another brand but I will not make this mistake again. Seems there are a lot of people experiencing problems trying to record using the DVD side of this unit. Please research your purchase. Newegg of course is in no way responsible for any of the issues with this unit or brand, they only sell the products.

1 out of 5 eggs#3 NOT a charm!

Pros: simplistic retro 80s VCR styling, orange pong era LCD graphics.

Cons: Incompatible with other JVC Discs!!! Also, the hookup instructions are incorrect. Even allowing for the broken "Chinglish", even if you follow the picture to hook the unit up, it will not work. Wish I could be my old one repaired. This new one is JUNK, especially considering the steepish price.

Other Thoughts: This is the 3rd JVC DVD recorder/VHS combo. The first two failed, leaving me with discs that were not finalized. Feeling I was trapped in the JVC brand, I bought the DR-MV100B. Not only did I find out that they discontinued the very handy on board cataloging feature (so that you can hunt for show or disc on the screen rather than shuffling through your collection), but I found out that this supposedly "multi" reading machine that promises to read everything under the sun can't read JVC disks that aren't finalized!!! ) Also, the remote has WAY too many identical black buttons (as opposed to the differently shaped and colored buttonson my old JVC remote). Curiously, the old one had a VERY handy "forward 30 seconds" feature that easily let you forward through commercials, but the new remote didn't. (Even more curiously, that function IS built into the unit, because I tried the button from the old remote on the new unit. So it's built in, but they don't provide the button on this remote?

4 out of 5 eggsAbove Average DVD Recorder

Pros: Great digital picture, good digital tuner, tons of output options. 1080 Upconversion improves standard DVDs and even VHS tapes.

Cons: No automatic clock setting- be prepared to manually set the clock every time the power goes out. The remote is also somewhat cheap.

Other Thoughts: For a higher end machine, the unit and remote seem somewhat flimsy. The lack of automatic clock setting also struck me as odd given all of the other features.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Combo Machine

Pros: Good channel tuner, both digital and analog. Easy to set up. I've connected it to a cheap HD antenna and it picked up channels I hadn't seen before, though I deleted most due to less that quality signal. It does very well recording broadcast to a DVD-RW. Playback is quite good. Overall I am very pleased with this unit.

Cons: I wish the combo units would pass through the HD broadcast to the TV. That way I wouldn't have to switch the TV inputs. Minor problem. Deleting old recordings from the DVD is not the easiest but probably should be difficult.

Other Thoughts: I haven't yet tried to dub my old VHS home videos to DVD but given the unit's performance so far it should do just fine.
