This Yamaha Home Theater Receiver brings HDMI switching to your living room, and adds Scene controls to make complex adjustments quickly. With state of the art decoding like Dolby Pro-Logic, you get Dolby bass management, and Width, Dimension, and Panorama controls to offer an unparalleled experience.

Yamaha's Cinema DSP technology builds on the receiver's full-featured decoding to generate independent sound fields on each of your 6 home theater speakers, so you get enveloping surround sound. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy surround sound without the full complement of speakers, so whether you have 2, 3, or 6 speakers, the music, sound effects, and voices will seem to come from around your room as the director or artist intended, for the most realistic sound. Silent Cinema even lets you experience surround sound through your headphones!

You can adjust your settings for listening or watching, or playing almost anything, thanks to Yamaha's Scene controls. 4 hot buttons set up your most-used scenes, and you can browse through the rest using the input knob. Once you select a scene, the receiver automatically starts the component associated with the profile you chose, and adjusts itself for optimal output. This full-featured nerve center gives you brilliant performance and simple operation from all your audio and video components, without overloading the budget!

3 out of 5 eggsDo Your HomeWork First

Pros: The unit sounds good, the music sounds pure crisp and clean, The price is right, I have purchased Yamaha products in the past most are still working now since 1985 so I love most of their equipment.

Cons: This system will only work with 8 or 6 ohm speaker systems and the Subwoofer has to have its own amp. I had read other reviews but I didn't see this. Also this is a non-refundable purchase so dont even think about returning it just because it doesn't meet your needs.

Other Thoughts: Again I say do your homework. I bought this system with very little knowledge of all the ins and outs of 5.1 do a search to learn more before your purchase. I was thinking I could hook this up to my old 3 ohm Samsung Mini system now I need to buy a new surround speaker system before I can begin to enjoy.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome

Pros: The sound seperation is much better than my older Yamaha. The price speaks for it's self.

Cons: The only con is UPS. I think newegg needs to make ups leave a note on your door and take the packages back to the sub station. I have come home and found over a thousand dollars worth of electronics sitting on my porch. This is disturbing to me.

Other Thoughts: Great product!

5 out of 5 eggsnot to shaby for 180 bucks

Pros: everything is a pro here (if i had to pick one i would say dts is great through optical input)

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: quit crying about hdmi audio passthrough it won't change anything and every other pro outshines the minor no hdmi audio issue + if you have 200 bucks to spend on bluray player then you should be able to cough up additional 200 to get a reciever capable of hdmi audio

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic for the money

Pros: For the media room this is a really nice amp. I have Direct TV, Toshiba upconverting DVD, X-Box 360, and soon a HTPC, running through it. Speakers are a set of Polk Audio with a subwoofer. Learning what is connected to what is the hardest but there is plenty of volume and connections although......

Cons: As many have said if HDMI carries the audio why doesn't Yamaha pick that signal and send it to the speakers? They and many others do not do it until you get into the 7.1 higher end amps. Really makes no sense to me but I am not the one who designs this stuff.

Other Thoughts: I would have liked one more HDMI input so that I don't have to change inputs on the TV....but Direct TV's newer HD recievers no longer do the off air DTV tuning so I have to change the input from HDMI to Antenna anyhow. That really burns me more than the HDMI/audio thing.

5 out of 5 eggsPleasantly Surprised

Pros: I was building a theater system on a somewhat tight budget, and I was sort of disheartened at my limited selection in my price range. Then I stumbled upon this little gem and I have to say, for its price, the build and quality is phenomenal. I have assorted polk speakers wired to it and the sound and quality is excellent and there's plenty of features for the average home theater user.

Cons: None yet, works as I expected for the price.

Other Thoughts: It seems some people expected HDMI to be more than just throughputs, if you absolutely cannot stand having a few extra cables, then this receiver's not for you. However, for most people who enjoy music and video, this Yamaha is great.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Easy installed,
works great,
looks great,
and has many features.

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: I didn't know how bad my old JVC receiver was untill I got this one hooked up. Right out of the box it was 200% better. Hooked it up and it sounded wonderful. It sounded even better after I tweaked it to fit my preferences.

5 out of 5 eggsI hate when people think to highly of them selves

Pros: A friend has this unit I am looking at one a few levels higher from Yamaha. Great sound good functionality. High quality dollar for dollar.

Cons: People like Jim who say they have a high level of understand. Yes this system has a passive switching of HDMI almost every receiver under $350 does.

Other Thoughts: If you look you will see most other sites state you need an audio cable besides just the HDMI. If you want true HDMI use you need to get a higher priced receiver but don't slam this one because you have little knowledge on how to do your homework

5 out of 5 eggsBest 5.1 System Aorund

Pros: 5.1, Optical In, 5.1 from stereo input, dolby, equalizer, big bright digital screen, HDMI..... too many to mention.

Cons: It didn't install itself.

Other Thoughts: Replaced a Fisher system that I got as a gift, I listen to some of my CDs and it's like I'm in a concert hall. My friends just love relaxing in my living room and listening to music.

5 out of 5 eggsWow!

Pros: Wow! Really great stereo separation. I can't believe the quality of this component at the $180.00 price point.

It looks better than in the pics at this website.

The receiver brings together simplicity and sophistication in looks and function.

Cons: The remote seems a bit overwhelming at first. Refer to the user manual for any non intuitative issues). Programming the Tuner presets would have been quite a headache had I not done so. Reading the instructions is helpful and thankfully the manual is relatively well written.

Other Thoughts: I haven't had the need to use the HDMI. Some previous buyers have complained about the pass through issue. If the HDMI works with the addition of an optical cable I don't see what the big problem is...buy the optical cable and complain no more.

Over all this system is pretty remarkable. I'm actually suprised by all the little sounds I didn't hear before. And that's on a pair of 20+ year old (high grade) speakers. Even Television Commercials sound better! Can't wait to listen to my audio collection over the coming winter.
