In addition to delivering great sound, Yamaha’s RX-V665 home theater receiver minimizes the cable clutter going to your HDTV. Working as a control hub, it has 4 HDMI-HDCP inputs, 2 sets of HD capable component inputs, and 4 video inputs with S-Video and composite jacks. It sends the signal through the HDMI-HDCP output jack and to your TV. There are stereo input jacks to match all of the video inputs, plus 2 optical and 2 coaxial digital audio inputs.
You say you want to listen to radio or your iPod? No problem! There are dedicated inputs for those accessories, too. You can listen to XM radio over 150 digital channels. When you add an iPod docking station, the song titles from your iPod will display on the receiver’s front panel and on-screen display. You can even listen to the music wirelessly with the optional YBA-10 Bluetooth dock.
Setup is a breeze with the advanced YPAO automatic calibration system. After it checks the connection and phase of each speaker it sends out tones to automatically calibrate the output signals. You don’t have to do a thing! Yamaha’s professional experience with sound and speakers comes home in exquisite style. Hear it for yourself!

Yamaha rx-665
- Pros: 4 HDMIs. HDMI pass thru when in standby mode. An absolute steal at $399.00 on sale at newegg.com.
- Cons: the Yamaha Manual isn't the easiest book in the world nor does it explain certain features well. All of the fun stuff like XM, Sirius, and zone 2 cost more $$ ;-) People complain about the remote, but it's ok and gets the job done. My Motorola DVR remote knows some of the yamaha cmds, unfortunately not the power button.
- Other Thoughts: This is my 1st receiver so I have absolute zero knowledge. I was able to hook up 5.1 with ease. Sounds ok even without attempting the automated YPAO configuration mode.
Very Good, but not great.
- Pros: 4 HDMI inputs with switching, Video Upscaling for S Video and Component and output through HDMI, Microphone setup that is a snap and couldnt possibly be easier. 7.1 Channel output. 2 Subwoofer Pre-outs which is excellent for large room setups. Assignable display titles for each independant input. iPod and Sirius/XM inputs are nice although I dont use them.
- Cons: Even though it is 90w, the volume is still low on my JBL Northridge speakers. Manual is not very detailed. There is no onscreen display for what type of digital feed is being used (i.e. TrueHD, DolbyDigital, DTS-HD) even in standard passthrough mode. No HDMI Input on the front of the unit for things like HD Camcorders. The preset Audio settings all seem to force to 7 Channel, even if it is 2 channel audio, there may be a way to change this, but it isnt described in the thin manual.
- Other Thoughts: The Audio quality is great, the video upscaling on the Component inputs are great as well, however the upscaling on AV and S-Video are just decent. The Max volume on my old Pioneer 5.1 channel receiver would make your ears bleed, but I can easily turn this receiver to max volume and still not have to cover my ears. If you are putting this in a large room, I would look elsewhere, but a standard size Living room (or smaller) it should work great.

Yamaha Delivers!
- Pros: Pretty good wattage per channel (even though many were freaking because of the weight difference in the VX663)
Handles all lossless codecs fantastically Pre/Pro outputs for future amplifier expansion Worked flawlessly with both of my PS3s much more
- Cons: Weird issue with switching between lossless and none lossless during playback but that's probably more of a bitstream issue.
- Other Thoughts: This was a great purchase for me for an entry level lossless receiver with a good feature set, highly recommended!
Great Price alot of features.
- Pros: Lots of features. Great price.
Lots of inputs and all the inputs are renameable so someone like my wife can know what input to use as you can name things like 'VCR' or 'DVD' or WII etc...
- Cons: You need to do the update yourself for the firmware.
Its pretty simple in that you just download the update from Yamaha website, burn it to a disc as a CD song, hook up your DVD player to it and initiate the firmware update by playing the song. But still you shouldn't have to do this. As other users have indicated the power just seems kinda low..I live in an apartment building highrise tho and so i don't need alot of power as my living room isnt exactly huge or anything..but defintely its lower power than my old 535 model
- Other Thoughts: Great value for your dollar..If you don't need alot of power/volume.
Not upgradeable
- Pros: None
- Cons: Nice brick. If you buy this receiver you will have to flash the firmware if you want to have audio out through your HDMI. Go figure, Yamaha decided to release a product that can't put out sound through HDMI and to add insult into injury they made it where you can't use an alternate audio source w/ HDMI. To get around this, you have to flash your firmware.
Problems with that: Almost impossible to find the link to upgrade the firmware. The Yamaha USA website is a shambles. As of 9/22/2009 if you go anywhere you see: "test page". I managed to download the file and went through the upgrade procedures but the upgrade would not take. So I went to an authorized Yamaha repair shop. The shop has the exact same problems and are trying to figure out why the POSTED fix will not work. The best part about flashing the firmware is you need an old CD player with optical out or digital sound out. They don't have a USB port to do the upgrade.
- Other Thoughts: Do not buy any Yamaha receiver. The receiver might as well be a brick that eats up electricity. Seriously not happy with this purchase.
Way to go Yamaha, I will never, ever buy another one of your products again.
