This Yamaha Home Theater Surround Sound System brings the HDMI home, and a 600W speaker system will fill your media room with rich, life-like sound. With state of the art decoding like Dolby Pro-Logic on board, you get options like Dolby bass management, and Width, Dimension, and Panorama controls to bring you a bold, unparalleled experience from your music and movies.

Yamaha's Cinema DSP technology builds on the receiver's full-featured decoding to generate independent sound fields from each of the 6 home theater speakers, so the music, sound effects, and voices will seem to come from around your room as the director or artist intended, for the most realistic sound. Silent Cinema even lets you experience surround sound through your headphones!

You can adjust your settings for listening or watching, or playing almost anything, thanks to Yamaha's Scene controls. 4 hot buttons set up your most-used scenes, and you can browse through the rest using the input knob. Once you select a scene, the receiver automatically starts the component associated with the profile you chose, and adjusts itself for optimal output. This full-featured nerve center gives you brilliant performance and simple operation from all your audio and video components, at an affordable price!

2 out of 5 eggsSome good some bad.

Pros: The speakers sound great and appear well constructed. The sub woofer has plenty of punch for this system. The receiver has great sound and I especially like the silent cinema feature.

Cons: Unfortunately the receiver has too many cons for me to endorse. Overall I really hate this receiver to the point to which I am tempted to rip it out an chuck it in the trash. The reasons I say this:
1 The buttons on the front of the receiver are very few. They are microscopic and multifunction.
2. There is no way to turn the sub woofer on or off or to adjust the sub volume remotely. The only way is to use the on/off and volume controls on the back of the sub itself.
3. There is no selection for blue-ray, only DVD. You will need a separate optical cable for audio and it isn't even for the DVD player.
4. The remote control is totally unintuitive. You will need to have to constantly refer back to the owners manual to figure out how to make it do what you want. And sometimes even that does not help.
5. The front panel led readout is all blue. Yamaha is traditionally amber. You can't even buy a Yamaha cd player that matches.
6. Volume knob not weighted and does not turn with remote

Other Thoughts: This is the first Yamaha I have ever owned and it they are all like this one, it will be my last.

4 out of 5 eggsGood Deal on a starter system

Pros: This system is comprised of individual home theater components. Unlike some of the other HTIBs you will find which have components combined together into one bloated system, this one is made up of separate components which you could purchase all separately if you wanted, for a discount price.

The sound quality is good for a basic home theater surround system.

Cons: This system does not decode digital audio via HDMI cables. I was disappointed to hook it up with my HDMI cables and have no sound come out of the speakers. You MUST buy digital coaxial/optical audio cables to hook up to your various components. (cable box, blueray, dvd, etc...) Although at this price range alot of other systems dont do this either. Either buy the cables or buy a step up model.

The box arrived a little beat up. Not suprising seing the thing weighed 85 lbs. A quick inspection revealed everything inside was perfectly intact and well packed/padded.

My last complaint is the digital audio inputs on the back. My cable box has a digital coaxial output and my Blue-ray player has a digital optical output. Unfortunately this receiver has only an optical input for the cable box, and only a coax for the DVD input. This results in having to switch the devices so the Blueray works on the Cable input and the Cable on the DVD input. Not a huge deal but annoying none the less.

Other Thoughts: A good system to start out with. However all the little annoyances add up to give -1 egg.

The input problem and annoyance was easily solved, as i bought a Harmony programmable remote which takes the guesswork out of turning the system on to the right inputs anyways.
