1 out of 5 eggsdamaged box

Pros: too soon to tell

Cons: too soon to tell

Other Thoughts: My receiver arrived yesterday in a box that has several damaged spots that penetrated through the box.
The box is dirty and looks like it has "tire" tracks on one side of it. It appears to have been tossed around a great deal.
I hope the unit was not damaged internally, as I have professional installers coming to connect it to a home theatre system.
I thought you should be aware of this.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat value for the price

Pros: I normally buy onkyo but my 606 that I’ve owned for a little over 3 years just froze up on me. I really liked that unit but it wasn't the most reliable and I've read that Yamaha has been more dependable. The A 700 has a lot of similarities as far as options go. Comparing the Audysee to the Yapo--The yapo was defiantly faster and a little more user friendly but I feel the Audysee did a little better job at setting up the room. The Yapo did it in about 2 minutes and the Audysee took 5-7 but it also took several locations from where listeners could be at. A few minor tweaks with the Yapo and it sounds great.

The A 700 seems like a very solid unit and I loved the 3 year warranty that came with it. I also really like the 'favorite' settings on the controller you can set for the settings you use frequently.

Overall I'm very happy with this product and my buying experience was top notch as always!! I had a few questions for CSR and they helped me instantly.

Cons: The one downfall for me--and it's a big one for ME: When changing the volume a Large black bar comes up on the TV screen to let you know what it is at. Every time you go to change the volume you get this huge black bar on the screen. This drives me nuts because when I watch movies I frequently find myself adjusting the volume and it becomes annoying fast!! My onkyo had an option to take this off the screen but the A700 does not. I searched many AV forums but there is currently no solution. Yamaha-please come out with an update for this petty but annoying problem for me!!

Other Thoughts: Definelty recomend

3 out of 5 eggsNothing special

Pros: Easy to set up and connect. No complaints about video.

Cons: Creates a low grumble from my subs when there's no audio input. Analog output for recording works only intermittantly. Tech support couldn't help, suggested I take it to a repair facility. Haven't had an opportunity to do that yet, we'll see if the sub problem can be solved.

Other Thoughts: got as bundle with Klipsch speakers, not impressed. If I had it to do over I would buy something else.

2 out of 5 eggsbad choice

Pros: looks nice, YPAO, was good while it worked. Got a set of Klipsch rb-51 reference for free with combo on Newegg.

Cons: Purchased from Newegg on April 28 (now may 14), so with ship time, I have only had this for 2 weeks. The entire pre-amp out stopped working. I called yamaha, they said "this is odd our receivers don't usually die that soon" he actually said that to me. He had me do hard reset, which did nothing. Only help he offered was giving me address of local yamaha repair shop, but being so new, I'm going to RMA it, not have it repaired.

The remote is terrible. No good manual. Very disappointed from this, would not go Yamaha again in the future.

Now I have to pay to ship from FL to CA.

1 out of 5 eggsHad to RMA

Pros: Sounds great. HDMI overlay on-screen menu system is awesome. Came with firmaware revision 2.04. 3D passthrough and HDMI standby switching are perfect. Assignable and customizable outputs are icing on the cake.

Cons: Both component video inputs dead in two days. Just after I get done programming the entire system, I have to do a complete factory reset (per Yamaha support). I guess that doesn't matter too much, since I have to send it back anyway. As this receiver is "return for replacement only", I'm not able to get something else. Plus, I am out $35 to ship it back to Newegg.

Other Thoughts: This was my first Yamaha home theater component. I had high expectations as this receiver is from the Aventage line. hope this was an anomaly. I'll repost another review after I receive the second one.

4 out of 5 eggsQuality Receiver

Pros: Great sound, Lots of HDMI inputs, YPAO is nice added feature. Onscreen GUI works well. Setup Zone 2 speakers without much hassle. Has a nice look to it.

Cons: There is a learning curve to getting everything setup, manual is on CD and there is a lot to it. YPAO is not perfect, but gets you at a nice starting point. No USB, or network capability which I already knew when I purchased it.

Other Thoughts: Received unit quickly from Newegg. Had latest firmware already installed which is great since upgrades aren't the most user friendly. I would buy this again, especially if it had the free speaker offer.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Receiver, Great Deal

Pros: Stunningly clean sound. Plenty of power with wall-mounted speakers (Polk RM8). Very versatile as to the number and type of inputs. Setup was extremely easy using the microphone. Works seamlessly with all my components, routing them through a single HDMI to the TV. Very attractive unit with nice finish. Great deal (free iPod Touch) and fast shipping from Newegg.

Cons: Remote is not the greatest (Tiny, hard to read keys and doesn't work well with all components. ) I had to print out 120 pages of the manual on CD to make setup practical.

Other Thoughts: I have Blu-ray, Comcast HD DVR, Apple TV and the Yamaha iPod dock running through the receiver. All look and sound fantastic. I highly recommend investing in a Logitech Harmony remote. (I have a 650 which works perfectly with this unit and my other components.)

5 out of 5 eggsYamaha Adventage

Pros: Lots of HDMI inputs, 7.2, second zone, on-screen GUI to program, included microphone and program to balance out speakers for any room, supports 3 digital audio inputs in addition to 6 HDMI, supports 2 sub-woofers. HDMI pass through worked perfectly. I have connected cable box, PS3, HTPC and Sony flat screen. Great audio output with no audible distortion using Polk Monitors and Polk sub.

Cons: The quick-start manual provided is too brief to really set up this unit. the complete manual is on a CD provided with the package or can be downloaded. Most people will need to have and use this manual to set up the unit, meaning really understand the sound programs, balancing, connection mapping, and the many complex functions. This unit does not get hot, unless you do not allow the proper ventilation space: 4-6 inches in front, 10 inches on top, 10 inches out the back and 8-10 inches on the left side. So either have an open type of media center (which I do) or electric cooling fans to keep this unit cool.

Other Thoughts: While my unit came with firmware 1.17 and played 3-D from my cable box and PS# without a problem, I did perform the recommended firmware update to version 2.5. You have to download a .wav file and burn to a CD. You then have to play the Cd unfiltered via the optical or coax digital audio output into the receiver. You need to set the receiver into a mode to take the update. I burned the CD on my PC and used my PS3 digital optical output to the receiver write the firmware update by playing this disc. If using a PS3, google for the correct settings.

5 out of 5 eggsClear and accurate sound

Pros: Very easy to set up. Took only 15 minutes to connect the speakers, bi-amp it, run YPAO and set up the source. The sound is incredibly clear and accurate. Pure direct mode is amazing. Makes high quality mp3s and FLACs sound great.

Cons: Advanced settings are only available through an on screen GUI - ie a monitor connected via HDMI, composite or yellow video out. Also the remote is archaic in design.

Other Thoughts: I have just a pair of Polk RTi A3s connected to this receiver. The sound is a different level when compared to the Onkyo TX-SR507 I was using. The bass response is tighter and the tweeters really come to life with the Yamaha. This receiver is a great investment.

My PC is connected via a Halide Design S/PDIF Bridge. Their DAC produces great sound and you should strongly consider buying it instead of a nice sound card - it's well worth the money.

Lastly, play your music using foobar instead of Winamp. HUGE difference!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Unit at the price point

Pros: Easy to set up and easy to use. Good sound, low THD, great interface between other components. I use it to control TV and all audio and video in the house.

Cons: USB connection point.
