4 out of 5 eggsYamaha RX-V371 5.1-Channel AV Receiver

Pros: This is a decent starting audio/video receiver. I purchased this for $149.99 about 2 years back and it worked fine for a while.

Cons: I reset to factory settings and now the ARC and CEC functions do not work. I cannot get my TV audio to play through the 5.1 system. This is only a mild inconvenience because I can just do analog audio and use the 5.1 channel enhancer instead of true 5.1, but I bought the 5.1 system for a reason.

Other Thoughts: If you are like me and spent way over your budget on your speaker system just get this inexpensive receiver to offset the price. I will eventually move up to 7.2 but until then this will work for my needs.

4 out of 5 eggsTop shelf on the bottom shelf

Pros: Easy set up
Plenty of inputs & outputs
Readable & thorough manuals
Great sound

Cons: No digital audio output.

Other Thoughts: One can use the headphone jack to send a digital audio signal to another amp, say the one running outdoor speakers, but then of course the indoor speakers are then switched off. So I took off a star for not having a dedicated digital audio output---maybe they thought to forestall piracy, but that could take place via the headphone jack as well. I don't know. Anyway, it's my first home theater system---I love how it sounds----and more importantly so does She----which is very important, as I received more than a few Glances and Raised Eyebrows as the large, heavy, expensive-looking boxes o' speakers arrived in a steady flow for about a month as I collected the system in serial fashion as Newegg put them on Sale. I use Polk Audio Monitor30 & 40 for all 5.1 of the speakers, they sound and look great. Later on I added a second Yamaha sub and that was really the ticket to fill a fairly large room (25 x 30) with thumping bass for the occasional party. So there it is. Awesome receiver, great sound & looks, great service from Newegg, happy Wife. What else could I ask for? Right, 7.1

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well

Pros: For the price, I have absolutely no complaints about this unit. It has more than enough connectors for most setups, looks great, and has a nice, solid feel to it. Sound is superb.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: On a budget but need a receiver? Look no further.

5 out of 5 eggsI love this receiver

Pros: I've had this receiver for about 6 mos now and I love it. It's such a great value for the money, you really can't go wrong with this receiver if you have always wanted surround sound for movies and music. You can spend hours adjusting this thing. For the past 6 mos I have been setting all the different parameters to see what sounds best and my wife is about ready to kill me. But I really think I have it dialed in. You can do so much, such as even if you use an HDMI cable for the attached component, you can still use an optical cable for the audio. I needed this because I have a Logitech Revue box that I use for Netflix, Youtube, etc. and I have my DVR going into the Revue with an HDMI cable and the Revue going into the receiver with an HDMI cable. It worked fine but I realized that the audio output of the Revue was only PCM which isn't too high tech. So I connected an optical cable to my DVR and plugged into AV1 on the receiver. Now the audio coming in is pure Dolby Digital, yeah

Cons: none at this price range, but a more expensive unit would probably give you pre-amp out on all channels and more power for playing music at concert volume levels, although this unit plays plenty loud, I have JBL speakers and I love them

3 out of 5 eggsIts ok

Pros: easy to setup, sounds great, works with google tv.

Cons: The built in AM tuner works fine, but I cant get the FM tuner to work, anyone else have this issue?

Also..
The RCA inputs on the thing are useless. If you are trying to use a VHS/DVD player that only has RCA outputs, you are going to have to plug it directly into the TV. For me this is a pain because then you have to mess with the input on the TV. The reason is if you plug an RCA IN(from DVD player) the HDMI OUT(to the TV) will not convert the signal from RCA to HDMI. Spent a good hour spinning my wheels to figure that one out -_-.

Other Thoughts: great for the price if you don't use old tech

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic bargain

Pros: This is one of the best values in receivers available at the time of this review. It's not an audiophile grade receiver (at this price audiophile receivers don't exist). It's not the most powerful receiver at this price. And there are a few fancy features missing at this price. That being said, this is probably the best bang for the buck you'll ever find.

This is a terrific upgrade if you already have a 5.1 setup but want the modern advantages of HDMI which include uncompressed surround from Blu-Ray, TV control of receiver volume & power down, & ARC (audio return channel). Even supports 3D on the HDMI inputs!

The DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) in this receiver is very impressive for the price. Very clean and pleasing sound. Full DTS and Dolby Digital support. Also if you read the manual, you'll find that you can name the inputs, group different audio and video inputs together, and assign any input with a default set of options to one of the 4 quick access keys on the remote.

Cons: Doesn't include a printed manual, only a CD with the PDF of the manual. You could argue this is more "green" but I doubt much is really saved, and it makes reading the otherwise good manual much more of a hassle.

There is plenty of power for an average living room, or bedroom, but this isn't a high powered amplifier and will show signs of stress at very high volume.

No power outlets for peripherals, but that's typical of most new receivers of this sort.

Remote is very serviceable, but not very ergonomic.

Other Thoughts: I got this on sale at NewEgg, and have been extremely pleased with my purchase. I live in an older house built in the late 50's and the electrical wiring isn't the greatest. I was having ground loop issues with my old Yamaha receiver so I wanted something that could accept more than two digital connections. I had also just upgraded to a new LG TV with 3D and HDMI ARC support, so this receiver fit the bill nicely. With all the digital connections I now have everything but my Wii hooked up digitally. No more ground loop issues!

I've always stuck with Yamaha receivers because they represent an excellent value and since Yamaha has been making musical instruments for years, they really know how to make great sounding audio products. Their receivers have never disappointed.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Initially Liked it.

Cons: On board DAC and noise from the amp is very audible at even low volume.

My AX-497amp blew this reciever away in terms of quality with the same cd player hooked up.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Audio

Pros: Optical Ins! 4 HDMI
Excellent remote and settings. sounding just PERFECT!
Mix Matching Speakers is not an issue due to individual speaker volume control and an excellent but minimalistic GUI.
Brown Bur DAC Sounds Fantastic

Cons: Can get a little warm when pushing some high volume music. Totally normal though.

Other Thoughts: Bought this receiver for the sole purpose of running optical in (lossless audio) from my PC to speakers/headphone.

Currently running a pair of Bose 301 Series IV for fronts, and a pair of energy EF-500 for rears. Reciever pushes out excellent volume and quality. My M50's also sound great on this.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great

Pros: Sounds great matched up with Polk M50's, CS1, M30's and PSW10 sub.
Entire 5.1 sytem purchased from Newegg on sale at various times for less than $600 total.

Cons: Wireless connectivity would have been nice.

Other Thoughts: I use this as my bedroom system. I went with this Yamaha reciever because I have had an RX-V765 powering my main system for over two years without any problems.
