4 out of 5 eggsno FLAC

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: See other reviews - great low cost option.

Cons: I forgot to write in my earlier review: the USB interface won't play FLAC. Not a huge deal, but worth giving people a heads up. If your entire collection is in FLAC and you wanted to play music off a thumb drive, you will be dissapointed. Seems like a strange omission.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat entry level receiver

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: Good sounding unit.
5.1 Surround sound that takes many input formats
4 HDMI devices
Self-calibrating!

Cons: Does not convert inputs to HDMI
Settings are not straight forward
USB interface is iDevice centric
4K on HDMI 1.4 is doubtful

Other Thoughts: I have had a Yamaha HTR-5830 for the last 8 years or so and was very happy with the sound quality. However, since I wanted to use my Chromecast for playing music and video on my HT system, I jumped on this unit when it came on sale. Very happy with it so far. HDMI switching, which as caused problems with simple
switches, has been fairly bug free with my old plasma TV.

If you are using a sound bar, you are a chump.

5 out of 5 eggsYamaha

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: Full featured receiver that works perfect considering the price. Its driving some pretty decent speakers. Got it for sub 2hundred$. Simple layout easy to config.

Cons: not as loud as my yzf 450

Other Thoughts: I set this up basically for our living room. Doesn't sound as good as my yamaha 667 but really nice for my wife to have great sound for her tv. What's not to like for the price. Just keep in mind this is entry level equipment

1 out of 5 eggsLasted one day

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: Great sound. Loud and clear. Pretty straight forward to set up.

Cons: DIED. After one day of use I lost the HDMI CEC function. I tried everything. Reset the TV and receiver. Replaced all cables. Could not get to work. Also had a popping when switching inputs. Called Yamaha support and they confirmed a hardware issue with the reciever (processor). Had to ship back to newegg. Awaiting a replacement or possible refund.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Receiver

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: Seems to have plenty of power for loud movie and and music listening. Switches HDMI so it eliminated a HDMI switch box I was previously using. The automatic calibration tool works well.

Cons: Seems like HDMI handshake takes longer than needed, but always works though.

Other Thoughts: If this is refurb and will last like a new one, then it is a good deal. I paid $250 for mine new.

4 out of 5 eggsNice.

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: Lots of features at a reasonably low price.
Comes with a mic for automatic adjustment of speaker phase/amp.
Programmable presets are useful.
It came with a free bluetooth accessory (part of a promotion?). I use it more than I expected.
Android app "irplus" has a remote preset with every button from the remote. If your device has an IR blaster, I highly recommend trying this.
Sound quality is great to my untrained ears.

Cons: You can't create two presets with the same video source and different audio sources. I realize this is slightly unusual, but I want to play the radio while browsing the web... Very sad.
Missing some features of more expensive units, like zone 2, more outputs, more inputs, etc. Personally, 4 HDMI is more than I need. I'm mostly using this for the amps.
No bluetooth or internet.
Cannot do full setup without the remote.

Other Thoughts: I manually adjusted my sub to +10dB to get the automatic on/off to work better. I found that it did not react to small input signals without this hack. (This required hand-tuning the sub amp dial a bit. The easiest way I found to do this was to keep changing the reciever crossover frequency and comparing the same clip of music until the results were indistinguishable.)

5 out of 5 eggsLove these

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: Awesome value, pretty much all you need for a basic setup. You could spend more on a higher model for more features, if needed. I use the optical connection from my PC to great effect.

Cons: Read user reviews here and elsewhere, sometimes there are issues with video modes and the like. Be sure it will do what you need. This is a low end model but has a good feature set.

Other Thoughts: I've purchased 3 of these, refurbs even, and had no issues after several years. Can't beat the price. Be sure to download the PDF manuals from Yamaha and you'll learn all you need to know.

5 out of 5 eggsIncredible value

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V377 5.1 Channel AV Receiver

Pros: 110W/channel dynamic power is as good as it gets for <$500. This receiver is an incredible value, for its sound quality, features, ports, and relatively small physical size. The "enhancer" filter is awesome for TV. And the ability to delay audio to the millisecond is wonderful, in order to match the delay to your TV's processing lag. The scene buttons are also nice. The receiver can of course convert 2-channel input audio to come out on 4 or 5.1 speakers.

Cons: I think some settings like the sound fields are only accessible behind a remote button, which is slightly confusing.

Other Thoughts: The price is unbelievable for this level of sound quality and features.
