4K Ultra HD Pass-Through for Super High Resolution Images

This AV receiver provides advanced HDMI® features including pass-through of 4K Ultra HD, which is gaining popularity. 4K Ultra HD refers to four times the resolution of a 1080p display. This receiver is capable of passing the 4K Ultra HD data from the source to the monitor for image clarity far beyond present standards.

HDMI with 3D and Audio Return Channel

3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable with no need for an extra optical cable.

SCENE for One-Touch Start

Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can reset the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode, then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds.

HDMI CEC for Easy Operation

Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality*. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver's remote unit to control player functions like skip and stop.
*All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.

USB Digital Connection for iPod® and iPhone® on the Front Panel

A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod / iPhone, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod / iPhone is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver's remote control unit to operate the iPod / iPhone music playback functions.

YPAO™ Sound Optimization for Automatic Speaker Set Up

YPAO analyzes the room acoustics and adjusts various audio parameters for optimum sound in just a few minutes. It's like having a professional installer calibrate your system.

Virtual CINEMA FRONT Provides Virtual 5-Channel Surround Sound with High Quality and Resolution

With Virtual CINEMA FRONT, you will enjoy virtual 5-channel surround sound with higher quality and resolution by installing surround speakers at the front. You get more flexibility to arrange your speakers inside the room, along with easy enjoyment of high quality surround sound.

HD Audio with CINEMA DSP

Yamaha's exclusive CINEMA DSP technology supports playback of HD Audio (Dolby® TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio™, etc.), providing natural and expansive sound imaging.

Subwoofer Trim Control for Improved Sound Imaging

The Subwoofer Trim Control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim Control takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Compressed Music Enhancer

When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. Yamaha's Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.

Discrete Amp Configuration for High Sound Quality

This AV receiver was designed with a strong focus on achieving exceptionally high sound clarity. It employs a discrete amp configuration and a low jitter PLL circuit, which contribute to its excellent audio performance.

ECO Mode Lowers Power Consumption by 20 Percent*

Yamaha's new ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20 percent. It can be set from the top of the GUI menu.
*Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off (Yamaha measurement).

Selectable Auto Power Down

Auto power down lets you save energy by selecting to turn off the power after two, four, eight or 12 hours.

Connection for YBA-11 Bluetooth Wireless Adapter

This AV receiver provides a DC out connection for the YBA-11 Bluetooth wireless technology adapter (optional accessory). You'll be able to stream music wirelessly from a Bluetooth-capable smartphone, tablet or PC, without a Wi-Fi environment.

Dolby® TrueHD

Dolby TrueHD is Dolby's next-generation lossless technology developed for high-definition disc-based media. Dolby TrueHD delivers tantalizing sound that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master, unlocking the true high-definition entertainment experience on next-generation discs. When coupled with high-definition video, Dolby TrueHD offers an unprecedented home theater experience that lets you enjoy sound as stunning as the high-definition picture.

DTS-HD featured products have the ability to decode all streams required for DTS-HD Master Audio™ and may have limitations in channel output and/or sampling frequency or may utilize unique post processing.

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first and only industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. With the ability to deliver crystal-clear, all-digital audio and video via a single cable, HDMI dramatically simplifies cabling and helps provide consumers with the highest-quality home theater experience. HDMI can provide an interface between most audio/video sources, such as a set-top box, Blu-ray Disc™ player, DVD player or AV receiver and a video monitor, such as a high-definition television (HDTV), over a single cable.
Depending on the model of product, HDMI can support standard, enhanced or high-definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It can support all currently-available compressed audio formats (such as Dolby® Digital and DTS) and most newer HDMI devices can support lossless digital audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™.

Made for iPod® and iPhone®

Look for the "Made for iPod and iPhone" logo to find electronic accessories designed to connect specifically to an iPod or iPhone and certified by the developer to meet Apple performance standards.

4K Ultra HD Pass-Through

4K Ultra HD pass-through receives super high definition resolution video and passes it to a 4K compatible monitor. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.

Cinema DSP Digital

Conventional multichannel audio reproduction systems base their sound on Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, using matrix and steering technologies to create surround sound effects. Yamaha CINEMA DSP is much more advanced, actually creating richly realized independent sound fields that envelop you in an unmatched surround sound experience. With dialogue, music and effects ideally located in these separate sound fields, you will hear sound with accurate placement, smooth movement, exceptional clarity and richness, and startlingly realistic presence. It will seem as if the walls of your room have disappeared and you are in the middle of your own immense theater! The decoding circuitry performs Dolby Pro Logic IIx, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS Digital Surround, DTS-ES (DTS-ES Matrix 6.1 and DTS-ES Discrete 6.1), DTS Neo:6 and DTS 96/24 decoding with extreme accuracy, as well as all digital sound field processing.

Silent Cinema™

Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones! This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.

Compressed Music Enhancer

Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that improves the performance of compressed music formats, including MP3 and WMA. With the Compressed Music Enhancer, highs and especially lows are richer and smoother, bringing music back to life to be as close to the original as possible.

SCENE – A New Level of Operating Ease

With the press of a single button, anyone in the home can enjoy the performance of a Yamaha AV receiver. SCENE buttons found on the front panel, the middle of the remote control and on the AV Controller App are the key to simple receiver operation. For example, pressing the TV SCENE button will turn on the receiver, switch to the TV input and recall your selected DSP surround mode. One button is all it takes. While the receiver is preset with typical listening SCENEs, it is simple to customize a SCENE button for one touch recall of your favorite listening settings.

YPAO™ Automatic System Calibration

Yamaha's YPAO system uses a small microphone and sophisticated equalization to automatically set the best sound for any room, no matter where the speakers are. First, it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters, such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers and even the sound pressure level, etc. Until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room and you don't have to do anything!

ECO Mode

ECO mode reduces power consumption by about 20 percent*. It can be set easily from the top of the GUI/OSD menu.
*Compared to power consumption when ECO mode is off. (Yamaha measurement.)

1 out of 5 eggsDon't buy if you want rebate.

Pros: Receiver works.

Cons: I bought this in August for my dad and sent in my rebate form. They received it, and 3 months later they said it was being mailed out. I never got it, so they said they would re send the rebate out. 3 months later I haven't received it so I just got off the phone with them. The lady said it has already cleared my bank and I need to check with my bank? I said the money would not have come out of my bank, it would have come out of yours. I then said, could you please send me the rebate so I can be the one to use it? She said I'm sorry this rebate is now closed.

So basically they had to have stolen my money. 6 months and 2 attempts to mail it to me? And now she said I already used it and it cleared my bank? What in the world?

Never ever doing business with a cheap company like that.

1 out of 5 eggsVery frustrated

Pros: Nice price

Cons: Amplifier section died after about a week. Returned for refund which was rejected because i had to remove the serial number off the box for the rebate. That's why I hate those fracking things.

5 out of 5 eggsVery Good!

Pros: - Excellent sound
- Flexible inputs
- Functional (not pretty) OSD
- Very good calibration
- Stays very cool

Cons: - Small remote buttons
- Smallish power supply (not yet a hindrance)
- Too many uncovered buttons on front for my tastes

Other Thoughts: I would like to mirror Bob S's review about the SQ on this unit. I also have Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers on this, models SP-BS41-LR and SP-FS51-LR as Front/Rear respective. This is in my office so the BS41's are on my desk and the FS51's are behind me. I only use this for audio, no video other than HDMI out for configuration on one of my monitors which works great. The YPAO did a wonderful job setting the EQ/Levels, I had to tweak the fronts a bit as I don't always sit exactly centered, but otherwise, it did very well. Comparing to my Onkyo TX-NR1009, this took a lot less tweaking to get just right. No sub so that probably played a big part. Audio input comes from my FiiO Alpen E17 via HP G1 ultrabook. I don't use the onboard USB or any other digital inputs so I can only attest to the analog quality of this device. It easily matches my (much) more expensive TX-NR1009 in my home theater and Pioneer X-Z9 in my home office. The one downside is the transformer side, I know this is a budget device, but it's still smaller than I would have expected. Long term reliability at high volume levels could suffer, thankfully, since this is an office setting, it's not usually running all that loud. The caps and psu are certainly smaller than the VSX-505S this replaced, but again, not an issue with sound quality that I can discern. VERY HAPPY with this purchase.

Nerd moment: To Andrew M, the volume at -20 is actually the decibel rating relative to reference levels, ie the volume at which content was mastered. This is all relative a bit, but basically, at 0dB you are playing at the intended volume of the content creator. This doesn't take into account the efficiency of speakers, room size, etc, so you'll hopefully always be well below 0. To get an idea of how this works to human hearing, it's not linear, -10dB and -15dB could sound very different volume wise when -30dB and -35dB could be much less noticeable. You can change this to a "conventional" positive display via the settings menu. Google axiomaudio understandingdb to get a good primer.

4 out of 5 eggsDoesn't like Comcast

Pros: Great basic receiver. Sound is very crisp and has a lot of DSP choices. Paired it with a couple Polk tower speakers and the sound for television is scary good. Sometimes it sounds like somebody is in your house.

Cons: Does not like Comcast box. Running HDMI, you have to turn on the TV and Receiver in exactly the right order or it turns into a green blob screen on the TV. At least once a week I have to turn off the TV, Receiver, and Comcast box and ignore for 20 minutes to get the tv to work. Have never had an issue like this before. But I don't like Comcast either so I don't blame the receiver for not wanting to work with it.

Other Thoughts: It doesn't have Pandora or any other wireless options. Does have a direct ipod input that is pretty basic but does play and charge with a very generic screen. Also have it hooked up to a Blu Ray and Turntable and those never give me a problem.

4 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: Good sound. Reliable so far, I leave it on 24/7 with no issues. Handles 4, 6 and 8 ohm speakers well in my experience.

Cons: No fancy features. The settings menu isn't too friendly, but it works.

Other Thoughts: I definitely recommend this if you want surround sound and don't want to go all out with an entertainment system.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Generally did what it was supposed to do.

Cons: After several months had intermittent issues with HDMI output to TV projector. Had to unplug and plug cable back in to restore. Now the video seems to died. Sound still works. Did a lot of trouble shooting and it seems something in the video output circuit has failed. Awaiting Newegg response on extended warranty.

5 out of 5 eggsBang! for the buck

Pros: Great all around workhorse as a 5.1 Surround Sound receiver. This piece does exactly what it says on the box. The power is clean and I've yet to experience clipping or distortion of any sort introduced by the amplifier section. The controls are good, with the remote it's easy to set up your sound field manually or use the microphone to let the receiver choose teh best sound field adjustments.

It's great with any of the HDMI devices I've used it with and the optional Bluetooth connection device for this unit works flawlessly. The Bluetooth pairs easily. With android cell phones, tablets and Win 7 laptops it was a virtually instant connection. Pretty much brain dead easy.

As a comment, for those who might be interested, I use the Pioneer speakers by Andrew Jones with this unit and it's stunningly great. I've had some really impressive audiophile gear in my day but I can't recall ever having a system that sounds this great for so little money. I bought the pieces as they came on sale and with each addition I became more impressed. The Yamaha receiver delivers great sound in every way and easily fills a 20'x20' game room.

Everything about the physical unit is generic, rather standard done in black.

Cons: The only part of this receiver that was disappointing was the menu interface. Wow. I think I could have done better back in the day of DOS when graphics truly sucked. It's clunky and has what seems like a strange way to navigate the controls. For a unit so ready to handle HDMI this interface is really bad. I've looked at some other brands in this price range and sadly they all seem to have been written by the same illiterate chimps. This function will undoubtedly be improved with time but for my thinking it way way past time to do it.

Other Thoughts: I bought this thinking I'd just use it in my bedroom since I didn't need a receiver that would drive greedy speakers or fill the room with wall shaking sound. Once I got the unit and experimented with different speakers I was so pleasantly surprised that I shifted it to the back den where it serves as a home entertainment piece. My son even has consoles connected to it and it actually does produce some wall shaking sounds. It's really a great value.

One review I read mentioned that the Bluetooth doesn't pair with a code and that's correct, I've not experienced any interference but that's not to say that it can't happen. Such a minor point for me but in close living quarters it might become an issue.
