5 out of 5 eggsgreat product

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V677 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: This receiver is great. It is a great way to organize all my devices. Wi-Fi capability is great if you have a good network set-up. The banana clip ports make this so much easier to secure the speakers (banana plugs did not come with receiver but absolutely worth grabbing). I have not bought another set of speakers for the zone 2 setting but this is one of the reasons I pulled the trigger on this. Paired with the Wi-Fi compatibility and the great app that can be downloaded or used on your phone or tablet, this makes a great set-up for a home theater.

Cons: Not much of an issue but you will need to update firmware when setting up. I had better luck doing this by hardwiring it to my router via Ethernet. Does not warrant loss of eggs

Other Thoughts: Wanted to note that the app works much better on Android devices. I had some issues on iOS. This isn't an issue for me as my tablet is Android and works flawlessly. This also isn't a flaw in the unit itself..

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Receiver

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V677 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: Most of the bells/whistles you'd want in a receiver
Built-in bookmarks for internet radio stations
Built-in WiFi
2.1A front USB outlet
Video upscaling, including from analog sources

Cons: Only one audio out
No HDCP 2.2
No digital radio
No Dolby Atmos
Remote only controls receiver

Other Thoughts: The RX-V673 / RX-A720 were the last receivers to receive two audio out plugs. Since the RX-V677 only has one, this means you can only connect one analog recording device to this receiver. For example, you could connect a VCR, but could not also connect a tape deck. A splitter might work, but that's so ghetto.

Even on sale, it was tough to shell-out the $$$ for a receiver without HDCP 2.2. But, my 20+ year old Technics receiver died, so I needed a replacement quick.

For some stupid reason, the RX-V673 made you go to a 3rd party internet site to hold internet radio bookmarks. This RX-V677 has its own local internet radio bookmarks.

@ MSRP, other brand receivers include Dolby Atmos

I think only the RX-V6xx line from Yamaha includes video upscaling. The lower models don't.

RX-V673's remote controlled the receiver AND TV. The RX-V677's remote only controls the receiver.

Now, if there was some way to connect a Wii to this receiver...

4 out of 5 eggsI should have done more research

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V677 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: This receiver is just ok it has plenty of features usually reserved for higher end units. I like the YPAO makes it a snap to set up home entertainment speaker arrangement. Internet radio is awesome wireless wifi works well streams just about every Audio source file imaginable. HDMI pass through works as stated but Ill go into that later. Multiple zone configuration. I like the remote control and the Apple app is sweet Apple Air play works from any room in my house. and the kids use it all the time,

Cons: I must have been reading the specifications for the RX 777.when i bought this model. I wasn't paying attention when I installed the speakers and peripherals and Hdmi cables. After i finished i listened moved the speakers around till they sounded best. The fronts speakers seemed to me under powered . So a month and a half later, I went out and purchased a pre amp for my Klipsch RF 82 II front speakers. I got home and went to install my pre amp and guess what. You cant there is no pre amp out? Wow was I mad at myself I must have swore a half dozen times. I have also been experiencing an HDMI issue where the screen will go black for 2-3 seconds the audio continues to play but no image. it is intermittent but usually happens at the least opportune times. it's not all that frequent to be really annoying but still it gets old.

Other Thoughts: This is a really nice mid range unit. It is not what i wanted or need i will be relegating this unit to the basement back into its box and onto the shelf, I have a Yamaha RX 2030 in route to my house now. So I can use my new pre amp. I learned a valuable lesson, make sure before you push purchase you have the correct unit. read twice order once. I must have read twenty unit specifications The RX 777 has pre Amp out before going back to this one. I should have read it again. If you are looking for a good midrange unit with high end function this is an awesome receiver. I would recommend this unit to a friend,

4 out of 5 eggsVery nice - some room for improvement

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V677 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: Many different ways to watch or listen to media, especially if you have Apple devices. My main system contains a hodge-podge of nice speakers, and this receiver makes them sound like they should. In particular I like the Scene buttons, which make it friendlier to the non-techies in the house. Love how I can select AirPlay from my iPhone, and the tuner automatically turns on and starts playing the music. I mostly let the Yamaha audio settings manage the fine tuning of the sound, with minimal futzing required. Once things are set, it doesn’t require a great deal of attention. It gets the most out of compressed audio like MP3s. The ability to quickly change the audio settings for a particular input is a plus. This includes easily being able to raise the volume of the dialogue.

Cons: My analog video sources looked a little clearer plugged directly into my TV. I do like having one video line out running from the receiver to the TV for the sake of simplicity, so I guess it’s no big deal. Here’s my big gripe. I use the network function to listen to my ripped music library stored on a NAS. My library is organized by genre / artist / album / 01-song title. When I use “folder view” and browse to an album, it alphabetizes each track, disregarding the numerical start to the filenames and the ID3 track number info. It plays everything out of order. **This can and should be fixed in a firmware update.** I tried using “album view” as suggested on an online forum, but it chokes on the number of files and doesn’t do anything.

Other Thoughts: This is the first new AV receiver I've purchased since the 1990s, and it replaces a JVC that was built like a tank, and was about as easy to operate. I like to keep my equipment a long time, and my research led me to the Yamaha RX-V series. Got it on a Shell Shocker, which was nice because most pieces of electronics are *not* worth the MSRP.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdated review

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V677 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: I bought this on a Shellshocker. Price I couldn't pass up.
Replacing a 6 year old Pioneer that had 2 video (only) switching HDMI inputs.
The sound envelops you!
Running just a 5.1 speaker system, and the difference is amazing.
I really like the dialogue lifting function. Really helps to hear whispering actors.
Upscaling works well. I'm only using it on a 1080P 55" screen, so no opinion on the 4K option.
Music from CD and iPod is amazingly clear.

Cons: Delay when using the onscreen options is annoying.
Also, not coming with a hand held manual is dumb.
Manual is a .pdf file on a CD.
Only 2 reasons for docking it 1 star.

3 out of 5 eggsYamaha - please hire a graphic designer

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V677 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: Audio works.

Cons: Other reviews warned me, but I wasn't fully prepared for how horrendous the on screen display for this is. It doesn't just look like bad shareware from the 90s... it's like 5 different, dated, mismatched GUIs mixed together. Weird DOS-esque screens one minute, super cheesy marbled borders the next.

Got a nice new HDTV? Enjoy streaming Pandora while you look at chunky bitmapped type and controls straight out of Windows 95.

Other Thoughts: I did the firmware update hoping they could have put at least the tiniest bit of effort into upgrading the onscreen display, but it's still hideous. Really takes away from the experience.

5 out of 5 eggsYamaha 7.2

This review is from: Yamaha RX-V677 7.2 Channel Wi-Fi Network AV Receiver

Pros: I have had good luck with Yamaha receivers in the past. I have been using my current reciever for almost 15 years as well as the same Polk subwoofer that came free with this purchase. This has enabled me to update my current system from 5.1 to 7.2. I love all the new features and the large number of hdmi ports. Iam currently in the middle of moving so I am still waiting to get everything hooked up and dialed in.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: Couldn't pass up the free $200+ Polk sub!
