As elegant as it is advanced, the Pioneer VSX-921-K delivers amazing home theater performance at a surprising value. With 4 3D-ready HDMI inputs for all your latest high-definition home theater components, and digital 1080p upscaling from any source, the VSX-921-K takes performance a step further with support for your digital media via a front USB input, compatibility with Bluetooth sources (using the optional AS-BT100 adapter), and a digital connection with your iPod, iPhone or iPad without a dock. The VSX-921-K does two things remarkably well: it takes performance further, while at the same time bringing you closer to exactly what the artist intended.

  • newegg Digital Direct connection with your iPod, iPhone or iPad The VSX-921-K is compatible with iPod, iPhone, and now iPad devices and is specifically designed to enhance the experience you get from them. Right out of the box, your receiver comes with a USB/video cable, so there's no need to buy a separate dock to access all your music, videos, streaming content, and photos stored on your Apple devices.
  • newegg Portable Device - Meet Home Theater The VSX-921-K is fully ready for wireless Bluetooth audio from virtually any A2DP profile Bluetooth device, including smartphones, laptops, etc. With the optional Pioneer AS-BT200 Bluetooth adapter (sold separately), you can unleash yourself from headphones, cables and inputs. And you'll enjoy near CD-quality with Sound Retriever AIR technology, created specifically to enhance Bluetooth audio.
  • newegg Ready for 3D All of Pioneer's newest receivers support the latest HDMI specification. All Pioneer receivers also offer advanced HDMI conveniences like Audio Return Channel and Power Save HDMI Standby Through.
  • newegg Spectacular 1080p High-definition Video With Anchor Bay video processing, the VSX-921 converts analog video sources to HDMI for one-wire high definition convenience. For lower resolution video, advanced video processing lets you upscale your picture to digital 1080p to best match the native resolution of your HDTV. With the VSX-921-K's superior video processing, you know the picture will be stunning, regardless of the source.
  • newegg True-to-Life, High-Definition Audio and New Dolby Pro Logic IIz Of course all the latest Pioneer receivers support high-definition audio formats like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Audio to give your Blu-ray Disc movies a soundtrack unsurpassed audio quality. But Pioneer also includes all of the Dolby and DTS surround formats best suited for the wide variety of entertainment sources, including the newest Dolby Pro Logic IIz height channel.
  • newegg Ultimate Sound Control Pioneer's exclusive Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC) provides a near studio-quality, multi-channel listening experience customized specifically to your listening environment - just sit back and let MCACC do the work. Even compressed audio such as WMA, MP3 and AAC is enhanced with another Pioneer exclusive, Advanced Sound Retriever, by filling in areas where minute details were left out during the compression process. Additionally, the Auto Level Control feature can equalize volume level differences between tracks playing from an iPhone or iPod or during television programming so the volume can be enjoyed at a consistent level--no more jarring "blare" when switching audio sources.

1 out of 5 eggsfound a fatal flaw

Pros: it mostly works.

Cons: I can't seem to edit my previous review so I'm posting a one-star review to balance it out. There's an issue with this receiver and my Verizon cable box (actually made by Motorola) where the receiver outputs a pink/purple tinted video signal when switching between SD and HD stations, or even when a SD commercial is broadcast on a HD channel, which actually does happen. The only way to correct this issue is to change to a different input and then back again. The odd thing is that I have a great picture at all times when connecting the cable box directly to the TV; I also have verified that my cable box is upscaling all video to 1080i and I have all video processing disabled for all HDMI inputs on the receiver. (I don't have a "direct" setting on the cable box, so I haven't been able to try that.) I have been going back and forth with Pioneer tech support but I don't think they actually believe that I have a real issue and that there is user error involved. A lot of the reason that I purchased a new receiver was so that I could use HDMI switching and not have to change inputs on the TV and receiver both when switching sources. However that seems to be the only way to get an acceptable picture from my cable box on this receiver. I'm regretting not returning it while it was still under warranty.

Other Thoughts: I realize that this product is discontinued now but hopefully people considering purchase of a Pioneer receiver will read this and immediately try switching between HD and SD on their cable box so they can return their new receivers if the issue persists on new models - I'm still corresponding with tech support but I see a new(er) receiver in my near future.

2 out of 5 eggsNothing but trouble

Pros: Good specs for the price. Used it to update from an older Pioneer receiver that worked well to this one for HDMI capability.

Cons: Ridciulously complex manual that answers few questions when you hit a snag. Receiver does not send its HDMI signal through more than 25 feet of cable. I needed 50 feet but nowhehre in the specs is this mentioned. Might be important to many buyers. My little cable box and blue-ray palyer sent a strong signal to TV on their own just fine. No so this receiver with all its muscle. Set-up takes forever with menus and sub-menus to go through. Then a change you make in one thing requires a change in another, but it is never clear you must look elsewhere as well to get things to work. No settings are accessable with controls on receiver front. You can only use the busy and ill desgined remote.

Other Thoughts: I had to call Pioneer tech support 2 times to get what should be a simple set-up problem solved. After some walk-throughs in the many menus and settings, both times the techie said my receiver needed to be taken in for service so I did. On both occasions, the authorized reapair facility in the area said there was nothing wrong with the receiver. The Pioneer techs knew nothing!

I would never buy a Pioneer product again if only because the set-up and support is lousy.

1 out of 5 eggsit is unacceptable

Pros: it is good when it works.

Cons: it stopped working after 4 days. The power was completely off.

Other Thoughts: please keep your original package as long as you can. If you miss any part for the RMA. Don't waste your money to send it back to Newegg. Just contact manufactory directly. Newegg can not do anything if you miss an item, even you are willing to pay additional cost.

3 out of 5 eggsVSX-921-K

Pros: it produces good sound quality when you have the supported media via HDMI

Cons: Optical ports are only for music and SAT-TV. I have a Western Digital media play that does not passthru true audio via HDMI. It's useless to me

Other Thoughts: Onkyo had been my favorite until the HDMI board fried. Come to think of it, with the comparable cost in mind, I prefer Onkyo over other brands.

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased so far

Pros: Great upscaling - nice picture

Excellent sound

Great buy for the money

Cons: HDMI through is a little unusual to set up (I've seen reports that people can't get it to work, but I'm not going to mess with it)

MCACC is archaic-looking

Not the easiest receiver to set up out of the box, but it works well when you do get it set up

Other Thoughts: Glad I have this receiver and can highly recommend it for the money. Get a set of great speakers from NewEgg (Energy 5.1 if you can get them) and rock the house!

5 out of 5 eggsExtremely pleased

Pros: It does what I thought it should and sounds great on my (not super-fancy) speakers.

-4 hdmi (which I don't even use, but nice to have)
-2 optical plugs (using one to get true surround and it's beautiful)
-basically, more inputs than I think you'll actually need.

-setting up is extremely simple especially using...

-the AWESOME MANUAL that it comes with (I actually learned a few things about how to properly set the system up and what some things meant--I even went to my parent's denon reciever and changed a few things after learning what they meant--It really helped me set up my system to near perfection. Probably the most helpful manual I have read)

-for the simpletons, the receiver will set some of the speaker settings for you using a microphone (I set it myself though)...

-looks pretty slick

-surround back or front height (one of the selling points for me if I ever want to add two more speakers).

-good price for great product

-many settings to output differen

Cons: -a little bigger than I pictured, but really not a problem at all.
-any problems a person might have with this unit is most likely because a personal preference, expecting too much from a SURROUND SOUND receiver, or simply thinking it cost an extra $$$$.

Other Thoughts: My setup is in a smaller area, so results may vary in larger room/speaker distances, but I don't really think too much--I have yet to turn it up really, really loud...So at close range it is very beautiful.

I'm using this for surround sound only, so the whole video in/out isn't really necessary for me, but it's nice knowing that it is there if I really need (it has more hdmi inputs than my tv).

In short, I have no buyers remorse. Great buy.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Receiver

Pros: For the price of the unit its a good value, seems to put out plenty of sound, and was easy to connect everything to and set up.

Cons: I can only really find one con to this unit, that being the onscreen UI... while yes it is functional its just bare bones and flickers slightly (at least on my Sony Bravia)

Other Thoughts: I upgraded from a VSX-D309 (old and out dated i know lol) and have no regrets about choosing this one.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat receiver for the price

Pros: Great price, 4 HDMI inputs, plenty of other inputs

Cons: On screen interface is very 8-bit in appearance, lacking built in Internet

Other Thoughts: I bought this to replace an Onkyo that was part of a 7.1 package. It works great with the Onkyo speakers, and has a really nice sound quality to it. The HDMI inputs have made my wiring job that much simpler. If I had it to do over again, I'd opt for the 1021 (next model up) in order to make use of the iPad app and also to do AirPlay. I currently have an AppleTV, which makes for easy AirPlay use, but having it built in would free up an extra HDMI port. I really like this receiver, especially given the price, and I will certainly look at Pioneer's offerings going forward.
