4 out of 5 eggsgood for small rooms

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: I bought this from best buy 3 yrs ago initially for my main entertainment system. While it was ok, it was not enough for me. So I moved it to my bedroom and I became more pleased with it.

Cons: I paid $120+ for it.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing for only 8" driver

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: Punchy deep hard hitting base reminiscent of the speakers we had back in the 80's. None of that fluttering distorted vibration most of today's subs were designed to produce (think Dubstep - ugg!)

Cons: hum coming from the amp. only noticeable between tracks.

Other Thoughts: I wanted to get two of these but decided on only one plus one Sony 10" sub to take things just a bit lower. Hoping it will be a nice combo.

4 out of 5 eggsGood little sub with the right application

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: Small form factor. Fair price when on sale. Down-firing design. Auto on/off works well enough.

Cons: Not for larger rooms. Only 50w RMS.

Other Thoughts: I owned this sub previously and the original SW8 before that. Decided to buy another one when the price dipped below $80. First off, newegg has this listed incorrectly as 130w rms when in fact the amp in this sub is 50w rms and 100w peak. Big difference. This is a very small sub with a down-firing 8" driver. This isn't a good sub for true home theater use, since it will only dig down to the mid 30Hz in range. This sub should be for small rooms like bedrooms or maybe using it in a PC set up. I have mine in my PC set up right now, running with a pair of Infinity Primus P163's and it works pretty well.

If you can get this sub for less than $80 it's a good buy, as mentioned above, for the right application. If you put this sub in a 3,000 ft^3 room it won't be able to perform very well. I always compared this sub directly to the Polk 10" PSW10, which is often in a similar price range. The Pioneer is the better sub, despite only having the 8" driver.

Bottom line, get this sub if you need more bass for your gaming system, PC set up or maybe a small room like a bedroom. Don't pay over $100 for this as it's not worth that price.

5 out of 5 eggsBang and Rumble

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: Tremendous bang for the buck. Very good punch and very good rumble for music and even better for movies and TV. Sounds much fuller than it's size would indicate. The amp has never gotten hot or shown any sign of being underpowered for the job. Two years+ ownership and it's been great in my living room approx. 20x25.

Cons: It can't exceed the laws of physics to create the sound of a 12" or 15" sub.
I use phono inputs so I can't tell how the speaker inputs work, other than that there are no downside that I can see.

Other Thoughts: I'm sure that this sub can't do what some larger subs do from a physics point of view but I own Infinity subs in 15 and 12 inch sizes and I'm going to add this with them in my music room. The smaller size means it can't provide some of the rumble I love but it can add a surprising amount of punch to music in percussion elements. The first one I got with the Pioneer speaker set, it's been great. Now I'm adding this one for strictly music.

3 out of 5 eggsSub died just under 2 years

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: For the price and size, it sounded great... when it worked

Cons: It only worked for slightly less than 2 years

Other Thoughts: Came back from a 2 week business trip put on some music and realized something was wrong, there was no bass at all. At first I thought it was completely dead, but then I put my ear up to it and you could hear muffled low frequencies coming out of the sub. Turning up the gain knob all the way helped, but it still wasn't nearly as loud as it used to be at half the gain. Searching on the internet, I realized I wasn't the first to have this happen. Apparently the amplifier is busted. After writing my previous review, I did notice a humming sound when the sub was in standby mode. I wonder if this contributed to the early failure. Too bad the warranty was only for a year, but then again, I probably would have paid shipping up the wazoo to get it serviced. Since it was so cheap ($70), I guess I shouldn't complain too much, it would probably cost almost as much to get it fixed. But still, less than 2 years before failure is very disappointing, even for a budget sub. I've had subs/amps that were used and abused in heat and cold in my car that lasted over 10 years, and they weren't anything really high end. Anyway, I'm off to find a replacement now... but I probably won't buy another low end Pioneer this time around though. The budget Dayton subs look promising!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat woofer for money

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: Neat looking, without any fancy blows & whistles.
Good quality. I owe it over half a year - no problems encountered.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Overall I am satisfied with Pioneer speaker quality. I owe this little sub, surround speakers & bookshelf speakers for quite a time.
In some case, however, you might wanna insulate speaker box little better.

4 out of 5 eggsProduces an audible hum

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: Sound quality is rather decent. The bass response it rather crisp. (I generally listen to music) . It is connected to a Yamaha receiver.
cabinets built quality seems nice. the feet provide plenty of vibration absorption.

Cons: Main issue is that it produces an audible hum even when in standby.
It is not coming from the speaker , so it is not a ground fault.

2 out of 5 eggsNice while it lasts

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: This speaker sounded very nice while it worked. I do not listen to loud volumes, so I never had a problem with distortion or chuffing or blowing the speaker out or it getting hot. I really enjoyed the sound till it died.

Cons: After about 18 months of using it, it just stopped working. Well, I can just barely hear it if I put my ear up to it. The volume and crossover knobs still affect the output - it's just that there is no more volume than what you'd get out of a headphone speaker.

Other Thoughts: Given that there are other reviewers here stating their speaker only lasted about a year an a half too, it seems this is a problem others may expect to encounter as time goes on. I would not recommend this speaker unless you only need to use it till the warranty runs out. Until then, you will likely enjoy it. Consider it to be disposable after that.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic sound on a budget

This review is from: Pioneer SW-8-K 100W Powered Subwoofer Single

Pros: Got this for $50 after MIR. Outstanding performance for the price. Matches the Andrew Jones towers and center channel very well.

Cons: Suffers from "chuffing" and isn't quite as musical as originally anticipated.
