Pioneer Floorstanding Speakers - Pair

  • 3 Woofers with Oversized Magnets for Powerful Bass
  • Superior Crossover Design for Full-Spectrum Clarity
  • Curved Cabinet Construction Designed to Reduce Vibration
  • 1" Soft Dome Tweeter for Crisp, Accurate, High Frequencies

Even when you don’t have a fortune to spend on speakers, it’s easy to set your sights higher starting from the ground up.

Introducing the new SP-FS51-LR Floor Standing Speakers from Pioneer.

Designed with uncompromising attention to detail, these speakers are ideal for home theater systems, offering remarkable audio quality from Blu-ray Disc® CD’s, DVD’s, gaming and any other audio source. Using three woofers with oversized magnets for powerful bass, they deliver the kind of high performance and exceptional quality that makes for a stunning music and home theater experience.

Over Seven Decades of Passion for Audio

Pioneer has been the industry leader in audio design and engineering firsts for over 70 years. Designed by Pioneer’s Chief Speaker Engineer Andrew Jones, these speakers embody all his high-end expertise and passion for pure audio reproduction. And while audio enthusiasts gladly pay as much as $70,000 for some of Andrew’s designs, you’ll find these new SP-FS51-LR speakers considerably more affordable.

Thinking Out of the Box

It’s okay to stare. With true curved cabinet design, not only are the SP-FS51-LR Floor Standing Speakers aesthetically more pleasing, so is the entire listening experience. The high-performance and exceptional sound quality is the result of this stiffer design, which also reduces standing sound waves inside the cabinet.

As a literal example of the term "beautifully engineered," the elegant and appealing speaker grills on the SP-FS51-LR’s do a superior job of protecting the speaker drivers.

The Inside Story

Much of the competition uses an extremely simple, low-cost cross-over made up of a single capacitor and inductor. The Pioneer SP-FS51-LR utilizes a sophisticated 6 component high-quality cross-over. The reasoning is simple: it’s yet one more way of ensuring high-quality, accurate sound that makes its presence known.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat speakers for a great price.

Pros: Extremely affordable
Very stylish
Clear sound
Good bass

Cons: N/A

Other Thoughts: I have the SP set hooked into a Pioneer Elite VSX-94TXH and I can't think of a better match. These speakers aren't incredibly powerful, and don't quite stand up to B&W speakers of the same dimension in terms of overall sound quality, but they're more than 80% of the way there in my book. For less than $200 for the pair, I can't think of any home stereo floorstanding speakers that I would rather have.

Pros: Nice case and crossover for the price

Cons: Junk I would ask any one to watch the guy that put his name to these on u-tube and you'll see someone selling something he don't believe in at all. The tweeters are junk burned out in 15sec at 18k hz the mid speakers suck.I modified these and they sound a lot better now. I put outboard tweeters and removed the mid range.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought a store-brand full home stereo system from a major retailer. At the time, I thought it sounded great. However, I wanted to get bigger speakers to replace the dinky satellite speakers. I thought I would replace the speakers piece by piece as I saved up enough money. I saw these guys on sale, saw the reviews, and I thought these were perfect. And if they weren't great, I could cycle into rear or side speakers. When I got these guys I was totally blown away with how great they sounded. There was just one problem, the other speakers were awful. They sounded bright and didn't have the range of audio as the Pioneers did. I knew these speakers were going to be better but I didn't expect such a drastic difference. I had to replace the center speaker right away because I couldn't hear dialog from the TV. These speakers were even better then the sub. At times I couldn't tell if the base was coming from the speaker or the sub. Needless to say I ended replacing the entire home theater with Pioneer speakers (sp-c21, sp-bs21, sp-bs41), a Polk subwoofer (psw-505 12"), and Sony receiver.

Cons: I would have liked them to be taller. They're just over 2 feet. I ended up placing them on some small coffee tables so the speakers can be in ear level.

Pros: Price

Cons: Horrible faded sound. I have a set of Athena technology 5.1 setup that are close to 15 years old that literally beat the hell out of these speakers. I had one tower speaker hooked up side by side with my old speakers and within 5 seconds, I knew that I would be taking the pioneers back.

4 out of 5 eggsa good speaker and an outstanding value

Pros: basically neutral
underpriced for their quality level
can play loudly without excessive distortion

Cons: won't "overwhelm" you when such overwhelming is called for

Other Thoughts: I'm a degreed engineer, used to write for a major audiophile magazine, and have made live recordings.

Earlier this year, one of my neighbors wanted new speakers, but had little money to spend. These speakers were suggested by a fellow reviewer, and checking revealed that they had been designed by a talented British engineer for Pioneer.

I found a pair at a local discount store, and gave a listen with several recordings, including one of Mahler's louder movements. The FS51 had no trouble playing loudly and cleanly, without "falling apart".

Particularly gratifying was the speaker's basic neutrality. These are //not// rock speakers, with big bass, an overly projected midrange, and a shrill top. If you know live sound, you will be pleased. If not, you'll say "there know gude".

Most of the negative reviews come from people who know nothing about accurate reproduction and want a speaker that delivers pleasing (to them) colorations. So be it.

4 out of 5 eggsGood

Pros: Non-powered

Cons: Non-powered

Other Thoughts: I have the matching pair of bookshelf speakers as well and all of these work great.

The floorstanding speakers produce nice sound but are nothing overwhelming. Good for the price and recommended if you're looking for non-powered speakers that use speaker wire. If you want it to go BOOM you may want to keep looking and find something that requires power input.

Overall 4/5.
They look great and sound pretty good. Any set of non-powered floor-standing speakers better than these will likely be at least double price. Try to buy these on sale though, maybe around $140

5 out of 5 eggspretty amazing

Pros: I, personally, like the way the look. good bass even at low volumes.

Cons: i dont like the speaker wire connectors.
They dont want to stay tight. on the plus side of that you can use banna plugs with them if you like and that problem is solved. I just wish the drivers themselves loooked nicer so you could leave the grills off.

Other Thoughts: I've never owned a really good (high quality) set of speakers before now so all I have to compare them to are my old car stereo's from the 80's (which weren't half bad). But let me tell you, I have never experienced the warmth and clarity of sound these posses. Didnt even think it posiible. With vocals and accompaniment its as if you were sitting right in front of the artists. NO hisssing or hashness whatsoever with the mids and highs. As for music in general, specs say they go down to 45Hz,. I'd say that is an understatement. The bass can get very deep, along the lines of thunder. And its clear as can be. And this is with them sittiing out alone in the middle of the floor in a 24x26' room - no where near a wall. Its also tight and punchy for drums just like we loved it in the 80's, and they can go pretty load too. I really dont need a subwoofer with them to listen to music the way I like it. Now if you are in to today's techno, dubstep, etc. and like that distorted, so called base that you get with it, you are gonna have to have a sub cause it will just cripple these. Of course then when they're busted they should sound about right for it. lol. If you can get them for $149 a pair like I did, there will be no regrets I promise you.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat budget speakers

Pros: Bang for the buck is high
Nice highs
Normal lows

Cons: Might need a sub for surround purposes, but truly not a con

Other Thoughts: These are not audiophile speakers. If you want audiophile, move on to another set.
These are very good sounding BUDGET speakers. The high/low separation sounds very good to me. They are worth the money spent, and look good too.
You might think about pairing these up with a sub for a fuller soundscape, but all in all, a good set of speakers.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing Sound

Pros: I almost feel badly for purchasing these speakers from New Egg for barely enough to cover shipping costs. The sound is incredible and well balanced and the sound stage more than adequate, especially considering the small price tag. I initially bought the SP-BS21-LR on sale (now my rear channels) and was so impressed I had to have the complete Pioneer/Andrew Jones designed system (Sub, Center, and the 51's for the front). Amazing sound for watching movies and for listening to music (the J. Geils song at the start of Hancock will blow you away, and I don't even like J. Geils).

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I listen to cd's using only the two 51's in front and find something new that impresses me about these speakers every time.
I can't see (or hear) any way possible to be disappointed with the purchase of these speakers.

3 out of 5 eggsNeed to be tweaked to sound good.

Pros: Low price for the pair. I actually like the metal grille design.

Cons: 6 Ohm and not very sensitive. Don't sound good without some EQ tweaking. These stand very short.

Other Thoughts: For the price, these are acceptable. I'm not understanding those who claim these are the best speakers you can get under $4-500. That's just ridiculous.

I wouldn't recommend these with an Onkyo receiver for two reasons. These aren't sensitive speakers, plus they are 6 Ohm. This will make an already hot running Onkyo receiver run even hotter. You have to turn the volume up quite a bit higher to achieve the same volume level as most other decent speakers. Second reason to avoid these with an Onkyo receiver is the lack of manual speakers EQ. These speakers sound dull and lifeless unless you make some fairly substantial EQ adjustments. The bass is weak, but can be boosted with EQ adjustment. Same for the dull treble response. If you have a recent Denon or Yamaha receiver, you can get these to sound fairly decent, but certainly not great.

Do note that these are very short, probably the shortest florstanding speakers I've ever seen. This could be good or bad, depending on your situation. Just looks odd to have small towers, yet the matching center channel is rather large in comparison.

Overall, get these if you are on a super tight budget and don't own an Onkyo receiver. These aren't going to WOW you, but you can make the necessary adjustments to make them sound better. Again, if you don't own an Onkyo receiver or even low end Pioneer.
