Pioneer SP-BS21-LR Bookshelf Loudspeakers Pair

Created by world-renowned speaker engineer Andrew Jones, SP-BS21-LR bookshelf speakers offer high-performance and exceptional quality to deliver a stunning music and home theater experience.

When you're looking for bookshelf speakers, the desire is always the same: to find high-quality, great-sounding speakers that don't require a co-signer to buy. And it wouldn't hurt if they could look spectacular sitting on your shelf as well.

That's always been the challenge. Until now. Introducing the SP-BS21-LR Bookshelf Speakers from Pioneer.

70 Years of Audio Firsts

These speakers come with a remarkable pedigree of over 70 years of Pioneer audio heritage and industry firsts. Like every speaker we build, these are engineered to offer incredible design and amazing sound quality. But then that's exactly what you'd expect from speakers designed by internationally renowned speaker engineer Andrew Jones. As Pioneer's Chief Speaker Engineer, Andrew has designed some of the world's finest loudspeakers, some costing as much as $70,000. Now he has brought his high-end expertise and passion to the creation of this affordable bookshelf speaker. And while the price is considerably lower than some of his other efforts, the expectation and delivery of accurate sound reproduction is the same.

Thinking Out of the Box

Typically you'll find most bookshelf speakers not only come in a box, they are a box. And while that might be better for production costs, it isn't better for sound reproduction. The SP-BS21-LR speakers utilize a true curved cabinet design. So besides the aesthetics being considerably more pleasing, this stiffer design reduces standing sound waves inside the cabinet, resulting in high-performance and exceptional sound quality.

As you look at them, you'll also notice our unique speaker grills. They're beautiful and elegant in their own right, but not for their own sake. This visually pleasing design also has a specific function, which is doing a superior job of protecting the speaker drivers.

The Inside Story

The job of the cross-over in a speaker is to break the audio signal into low, high and sometimes mid-range frequencies. It's an important job, and it uses circuitry like inductors and capacitors to accomplish it. Much of the competition uses an extremely simple, low-cost cross-over made up of a single capacitor and inductor. The Pioneer SP-BS21-LR utilizes a sophisticated 6 component high-quality cross over. The reasoning is simple: we do it because it's one more way of insuring high-quality sound that makes its presence known.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: They look nice.

Cons: I wish they had a place for mounting. I ended up having to screw into the cabinet, which I did not want to do.

Other Thoughts: I bought the floor and center speakers and I really like them. When I got these I was disappointed. These guys can't compete with the front 3 speakers. It made sound like most of the sound was coming from the front speakers. At best, these could be used as the 6th and 7th (side or top front) speakers. I ended up replacing these with the sp-bs41. I am considering getting two sp-c21 to use as rear or side channels and not use these at all.

5 out of 5 eggsIt really fills a room

Pros: Great bass resonance - This will fill a medium size living room. Though I would still recommend a subwoofer if your house members allow it.
Sound is rich and level most of the time. Miles better than my Insignia NS-SP213 bookshelfs.

Cons: The highs are a little toned down. Maybe a tad too much for my taste.
Bass can muddle up the experience sometimes but only in certain songs and movies.

Other Thoughts: A great buy for $60 for a pair. Some people complain about the design of the box since it narrows down in the back. But I was kind of glad for it because I was able to wedge them right next to my TV without getting stands.

4 out of 5 eggsA bit large for surround speakers

Pros: These speakers are a great buy to go along with the floor speaker set if you are looking for a full surround sound speaker set up.

Cons: These speakers are much larger than you might think. You don't really realize their size just by looking at the dimensions on paper. They are well above average size for a bookshelf/surround speaker.

Other Thoughts: Overall, these speakers were a great buy to go along with the purchase of the floor speakers. The most important thing to keep in mind (in my opinion) when purchasing these speakers is to make sure you can accommodate their size. they weigh about 7-8 lbs each so mounting them to a standard surround speaker stand won't be an option.

4 out of 5 eggsdetailed and transparent as nearfield monitors

Pros: great value
just about all of the sonic accuracy you need
not fatiguing

Cons: their size and shape make them a bit cumbersome to integrate into an audio/recording station
highest highs and lowest lows are rolled-off
fairly directional which might make a difference for basic home stereo use.

Other Thoughts: paired with a quality (but not necessarily high powered) amp, I'm finding these pretty optimal as monitors for mixing and sound design. Again, some roll-off, so you need to double-check with headphones now and then, but let's face it, any powered monitor setup under $300 and anywhere near this size is going to strain for those frequencies if they even try.

5 out of 5 eggsAt this price...Go!

Pros: Yes I have these! The negative reviewer missed many points in speaker design. #1- the plasti-shell mounting is for fast and accurate assembly, using the lowest cost driver frame, It is not correct to upsize a driver when vented. What you do is RIGHT-SIZE it to the correct volume. and here, as in the crossover, we see a designed, not thrown together unit. Cheap speaker? Yes! I found the harmonic distortion high in the bass driver, below 200Hz. It is also true that you DO NOT hear this unless you aspire to organ concertos! Tweeter is fine & is time-aligned!

Cons: Vinyl. You can peel it off & do elegant veneer. Just do paper-backed veneer

Other Thoughts: A serious quality spkr. at this size costs 10 times as much! For just one!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I got these speakers to replace one of my surrounds that busted during a move for my 5.1 setup. They are a subtle yet noticeable upgrade to the ones I got years ago packaged with a receiver.

Cons: No mounting points to hold them to a wall, but they are bookshelf speakers so that's a little expected. Can't really fault the good people at pioneer for that.

Other Thoughts: Make sure you have a good place to put them if you get these. I typically mount my speakers a little above ear level but with no mounting points and my landlord not letting me put nails in the wall I have to sit these on the floor until I move.

5 out of 5 eggsProbably meets 90% of consumer standards, and then some

Pros: Price I paid: 70$. Lowest price ive seen it: 40$. To sum it up thats between 20$-35$-50$("normal price") per speaker, as they come in pairs. For this price, these speakers are PHENOMENAL.
The average consumer buys HTIB sets, and these speakers blow them out of the water in terms of clarity, range of sound, power, even looks.
Ive owned these speakers, played them past the break-in period, and they only sound better the more i listen to them
i consider myself a rookie audiophile, and these speakers sound worlds better than both my previous HTIB setup and my computer speakers (harman kardon soundsticks)
the highs are nice and warm and not at all harsh or overly bright, the mids have a nice full sound, and the lows are incredibly punchy for those modest sized tweeters. if this is for a home theater setup, youre going to want to add a sub nonetheless. but for computer speakers, i listen to all sorts of music, rhcp, edm, the black keys, liquid tension experiment, gustav holst, michael jackson, telefon tel aviv. these speakers are more than enough for all genres.
additionally, the build is very sturdy. i can understand why people are prone to disliking the metal grills, but these speakers feel incredibly solid over all, metal grills and all. the semigloss black wood looks elegant, and the pioneer logo isnt intrusive at all.

Cons: my only quip with these speakers is that they are not wall mountable, making it a hassle to use them as rears or surrounds. ive read about people drilling holes in them to mount them, but i could never trust myself to do a neat job with that

Other Thoughts: just started getting into high fidelity audio.
i currently have these hooked up to a topping tp41 (albeit a little underpowered for these speakers) => fiio d03 => optical out on my computer. i have to say, theyre replacing a pair of harman kardon soundsticks III, and although i was actually a fan of the soundstick aesthetic, and its lack of distortion at full volume, these speakers sound phenomenally better. the highs were so harsh on my soundsticks, its incredibly noticeable when comparing the two speakers side by side. theyre awfully big, impossible to mount without drilling into (no thanks), but they look elegant, very solid, and they sound amazing. i plan on replacing them with audioengine monitors sometime in the future, but im already contemplating buying another pair at this price to create a 7.1 setup for my game room upstairs, and eventually adding the towers as either fronts or rears, buying a center, and a subwoofer. i love everything about these speakers. im a college student living in an apartment and i can easily turn up the volume loud enough to get noise complaints, and thats with a 25wpc 8ohm amplifier. i can only imagine the kind of sound theyd pump out with my receiver at home. wholly recommend these speakers, especially if youre audio-noobs/looking for budget friendly entry level audiophile sound. at 50$ you really cant lose here. the only cons here are the lack of mounting capabilities. it makes setting them up as surround/rear speakers somewhat difficult. and if you plan on using these in a small space/as computer speakers, id recommend keeping them pointed at you, around eye level. theyre significantly directional. unrelated to this topic, i know people love the cheap little lepai amp, but topping t amps are great, they feel incredibly solid, the brushed steel looks very elegant, and if you can find a good deal on one, theyre a great steal (i got my tp41 for 50$ during christmas eve sale.) if not, even with a lepai, for under 100 bucks youve got yourself a computer system that beats 90% of the "computer speakers" out there.

5 out of 5 eggsNo Rebate Coming - Forget it

Pros: Very nice speakers designed by a pro. No issues with the product - superb.

Cons: NewEgg's rebate will be rejected. There is no hope of getting your rebate fairly on these. Forget it. Biggest CON I've ever seen. NewEgg should be ashamed.
