1 out of 5 eggsvsx recievers

Pros: It comes with all the bells and whisles
Sound is great

Cons: The transistors are a known factor in these amps to go bad. so it you buy one it will not last long before it becomes a paper weight. I wish i would have read all the reviews before i bought this receiver. Pioneer knows the problem but hasn't done anything to to resolve this issue... "SO YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED"
DON'T BUY A PIONEER RECIEVER

Other Thoughts: I will never buy a pioneer product as long as i live..

2 out of 5 eggsVideo cuts out often

Pros: 6 HDMI inputs.
Airplay.
works great with Xbox One.

Cons: After about 3 months of use (right when my warranty ran out) the video signal would cut out for a second every few minutes. I could temporarily fix it by switching from one input to another but this no longer works.
I now have my HDMI going directly to the TV and tried to bring the audio back to the receiver with an optical cable but that isn't working. It might be my TV but after hours of reading the manual for both I couldn't get an audio signal.
Since I cannot use it for video it is pretty much a glorified airplay device...

Other Thoughts: I had a refurbished model, but that is no excuse for it breaking after 3 months.

Pros: Works Great why all the young people are not happy with not being able to rename the HDMI PORTS? You got 6 pre-assigned that is super to some one in there 50,s. PIONEER has them all covered. I put my computer on VIDEO that's were my 1.8T of movies are.

Cons: Cant find the adaptor. Looking at USB possibilities.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for most users

Pros: - 6 HDMI inputs, which are great if you're like me and have a lot of devices in your entertainment center.
- Great sound quality for most people's needs. Unless you're a serious audiophile, this should be more than suitable for a living room home theater/multimedia hub.
- Easy to connect and configure
- Great value. I purchased this at over 50% off the sticker price through a shell-shocker deal on Newegg. Still a decent value at it's regular price but this line of receiver goes on sale frequently here and at other deal-of-the-day type websites and can be found for much less than original price. Few other receivers in this range of price have as many HDMI inputs.
- Has some basic network features if you're into that sort of thing. DLNA, can play Pandora, and AirPlay integration is super-easy to use with a compatible Apple device. I'll probably only be using AirPlay, but the rest is there if you want it.

Cons: - Lacks integrated Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity, and Pioneer gouges the consumer by charging $100 for a cheap dongle you plug into the back of the receiver. In my case, I'd be paying 60% of the price I paid for the unit itself to add this functionality.
- Lacks composite video input. This one's a little puzzling, since competitors offer this on cheaper models. Maybe Pioneer thinks this is a dead medium now that HDMI is standard, but it still has RCA inputs.
- Badly dated interface. You probably won't be spending a lot of time in the receiver's interface, but the MS-DOS-style menus are puzzling and inexcusable. This is not unique to Pioneer, but just know what you're getting.
- Design is garish. Mine will be shut into a Standout Designs entertainment center behind tinted glass but, still, this is not an attractive piece of electronics. Again, not unique to Pioneer, but other manufacturers are at least trying to rethink how these are designed. This is just a massive black box with a couple of knobs and the most basic LED "alarm clock" style display on the face of the unit.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this unit to alleviate the tangle of wires and lack of inputs on my old turn of the century Yamaha entry-level receiver. I have several devices in my living room entertainment center and needed something to serve as a hub and drive a set of Klipsch Quintet 5.1 speakers.

Fundamentally an AV Receiver should send audio through your speakers, and this product does a fine job of it. In fact, after the automatic calibration, there was a noticable improvement in clarity and balance in the BluRay discs I tested with the system - Pan's Labyrinth and The Last Waltz. Dialog is projected clearly through the center channel and was not overpowered by background music or sound effects. Music was rich and free of distortion at normal listening levels. Unless you're a serious audiophile, in which case you'd probably be buying a heck of a lot nicer receiver, you'll be very pleased with the quality of audio from this unit.

There's not much to say about the HDMI inputs besides that it has six of them, which is more than enough for me, and gives me room to expand if I want to add a new video game console or media device. It gets the job done as a multimedia hub and greatly simplified my entertainment center. The one caveat is that it lacks a composite video input. This isn't a dealbreaker for me, but if you own an older device that outputs composite, you may need to either use RCA connections or purchase a converter.

The biggest knock against this device is the seemingly intentional lack of Bluetooth and WiFi capability. There's room for a $100 adapter you can plug in to the back of the unit. We have the receiver hard-wired to our router and will only really be using AirPlay out of its network features, but please be aware that you need to tack on $100 to the price of this unit if you need to connect it to your network via WiFi or use Bluetooth to connect it to smartphones or other devices to stream media. It's insulting and consumer un-friendly for a WiFi dongle to be priced so eggregiously. Knowing that I wouldn't need those features I was able to excuse it, but please go in eyes open about this lest you be gouged by Pioneer for wanting a feature that's basic functionality in most other modern networked devices.

One other small knock I have against it is the design and interface. If you're shopping in this price range, these features are common among almost every manufacturer. With almost every other electronic device in existance getting smaller, AV receivers are still hulking black monoliths and this one is no exception. It looks strikingly similar to the Pioneer receiver I had in the early 90s, and that's not a compliment. The menu system is also as basic as you can possibly imagine. Simply white text on a black background, a la MS DOS, with no context or hints as to what some of the settings do.

The bottom line is that this is a supurb value as a media hub and does a great job outputting sound if you can deal with some small issue

4 out of 5 eggsLots of inputs, easy setup, Great Sound

Pros: Bought this to replace an ancient Sony receiver in my home theater setup (my son is still using that one at college). Was looking for a 5.1 setup that had plenty of HDMI inputs and wired ethernet. This fit the bill just fine. I have it connected to a VIZIO LED TV, Sony Blu Ray, XBOX 360, ancient Dual turntable, and a media center computer. It is driving a set of Polk Audio RM6750 5.1 speakers. No problems playing any media I have thrown at it from vinyl to the 500 GB of music stored on my NAS. Surround sound works very well. I gave it 4 stars because I haven't had it that long.

Cons: None that I have found so far.

Other Thoughts: I'd have replaced it with another Sony unit because I loved the one I replaced, but Sony is not what they once were. Others have complained that VSX 822 is difficult to setup, the user interface awful, and that the manual is too long. It is probably not a great choice if you are intimidated by consumer electronic products. As an Electrical Engineer I thought it was fairly logically organized, and any product with advanced features in this day and age will probably have a complicated user interface since most features are implemented in programming. I am using a Logitech Harmony One universal remote to control my system which makes using it easy, once it is programmed. Even my wife who thinks FAX machines are "Magic", can easily use it and she actually loves it. She hated the last system, she said it was too complicated to use. So it has made my world better, no more annoyed phone calls asking how to make the entertainment system do this or that. Based on some of the other reviews I did by the extended warranty.

3 out of 5 eggsnot impressed but great price

Pros: Looks great and comes with a good amount of power. I got mines for less than 200 dollars so the price is great compared to the competition.

Cons: Firmwire sucks. UI looks terrible on a 55 inch tv. Dlna is almost unwatchable. But I didnt buy it for the bells and wistles. I bought it based on price and the ability to control the unit over wifi.... well that is possible but this lower end model only lets you control the most basic functions. Dont expect any equalizer tinkering etc. Like most companies that no nothing about how to please customers. You have to buy the outrageously priced premium reciever that doesvery little more than the budget version to get the more comprehensive app remote. Personally Iid recommend most viewing this item to get a kardon, denon or yamaha. Its too late for me to return because it took me 3 months to buy my klipsch speakers and set up my system.

Other Thoughts: Pioneer needs to fire the person incharge of quality control and marketing. This reciever needs a user interface refresh. It needs to be able to scale on a large tv. Advanced functionality on the remote app should be granted to all users. Why would anyone want to pay for a higher end pioneer reciever if we arent satified with the mid level reciever. I just paid over a thousand dollars on speakers. Of course if the pioneer 822k made a good impression I would have upgraded in a year to a higher end model but since your mid level is so disappointing in user experience I wont be coming back to the brand. When you buy an ipad. It doesnt matter how expensive it is due to memory or cell phone connectivity. Whether you pay 299 or 899 you can still expect to get a refined and beautiful product with the samr user experience. You guys in pioneer should be taking notes.

4 out of 5 eggsGenerally solid receiver

Pros: Gets 5.1 surround sound through all hdmi hook-ups, and with the right cables gets surround sound from tv apps

Cons: Pandora doesn't work, still don't really think a several hundred dollar extra device needs to exist but if it does this does a decent job

5 out of 5 eggsEpic

Pros: - Easy setup (relatively speaking)
- Ports for everything
- Lots of features

Cons: - No wifi built in
- Hard to diagnose problems
- Mile long manual

Other Thoughts: Getting everything set up and plugged in is easy. The MCACC sound setup is nice and simple, but I still had to make manual adjustments. For instance, it read my front speakers as LARGE (which they are), but because of that it played my bass through them and not my much more powerful subwoofer so I had to change them to SMALL.

Everything I wanted plugged into it and I was not short on ports.

It doesn't come with wifi, which it seems like no receivers do, but that didn't bother me since my TV has wifi and I can play pandora and netflix through it.

I have been having an issue with my center channel and surround channels not playing sound and there really isn't a great diagnostic tool. You have to troll the internet and hope someone else has a problem that matches yours.

If you can do a professional set up of your new sound system, it might actually be worth it. I'm more of a computer person than an audio guy.

On a final note, it gets hot. Really hot. I had to purchase an 80mm external USB fan for the shelving (which is open) because the thing doesn't move any air by itself and can easily overheat if anything is overhead.

Bottom line, for what I paid I got a lot more than I was expecting. My new home theater is nearly complete and this receiver is perfect for the job.
