Onkyo proves that entry-level doesn't equal bottom of the barrel with the TX-SR506. This unit is easy to set up thanks to the Audyssey 2EQ auto room calibration feature. This automatically calibrates the output based on listening position and speaker placement. The DynamicEQ feature adjusts the settings on the fly as the volume changes so vocals and dialogue are always crisp and clear.

Onkyo's CinemaFILTER technology adjusts the tonal balance of the soundtrack to take room size into account. This way the soundtrack will sound like it is supposed to and not like it has been forced into a room two sizes too small. When coupled with the Wide Range Amplifier Technology you get a true to life sound free of amplifier noise.

Other convenience features have also been added. Powered Zone 2 lets you send a stereo signal from a CD player or the radio to a set of speakers in another room while still having 5 channel surround sound in the theater room.

  • newegg High Definition Up-Conversion with HDMI When connected to an HDMI-compatible TV via an HDMI cable, the Onkyo TX-SR506 up-converts video content up to 1080p resolution for high-quality high definition images.
  • newegg Accurate Surround Sound With the integrated DTS and Dolby Pro Logic IIx, enjoy powerful and immersive surround sound like it was meant to be.
  • newegg CinemaFILTER Technology CinemaFILTER, developed by Onkyo, is a solution that restores the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environs of your home theater, ensuring the smoothest sound at any volume.
  • newegg Wide Range Amplifier Technology WRAT-equipped amplifiers handle sonic demands of high-resolution formats and provide an improved dynamic S/N ratio and better delivery of momentary power peaks from all other formats such as high-definition and regular DVDs, HD broadcasts and digital files, resulting in unmatchable movie-theater impact and sound purity.
  • newegg Powered Zone 2 Powered Zone 2 brings multi-zone audio entertainment to your home through dedicated line outs, pre outs and speaker connections.
  • newegg Remote Interactive With Onkyo-exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, integrate and operate all compatible components using a single remote control.

5 out of 5 eggsGood for the price

Pros: This has a multitude of connectivity options, looks good, maxes out at a volume my neighbors would call the cops on me for... Don't know what else to say, it's a part of my new perfect home theater system and it's making me happy :)

Cons: As you may have read in other reviews (which I didn't notice in time) the audio does not make it through the HDMI cables, so you have to run separate cables for your audio from device to receiver. This was disappointing since I wanted to play Halo 3 online in HD for the first time when I set this up with my projector, but I couldn't get any sound. I then had to spend an extra $75 to buy an optical cable and an adapter for my Xbox, but now It's all gravy, baby :) The remote does get kind of tedious too at times, since you have to hit the receiver button with whatever other button you are pushing except for stuff like volume and power.

Other Thoughts: I made a step forward from my previous receiver, and paid a VERY fair price for its many options.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for the money

Pros: Tons of inputs. For an entry level 7.1, you really couldn't ask for more. Good power for smaller spaces like mine (apt). HDMI switching: very convenient and assignable with any audio input. Plenty of video/audio modes (DVR, DVD, Aux, etc.) and all customizable! Nothing like my old receiver.

Cons: Only pass-through HDMI, but if you know this beforehand and get the proper cable, there are still 4 digital inputs so you won't miss out.

Other Thoughts: I think manufacturer's should say more explicitly if a product it only pass-through HDMI (could even be an upselling point). Yes, you will find out if you are tech savvy and do research, and sure, people who aren't probably won't even notice, but still :P
All in all a great bang for the buck if you don't mind buying extra cables and if you don't have a huge space to fill with sound.

5 out of 5 eggsFANTASTIC RECEIVER!

Pros: I am very glad I bought this unit! I took my time and researched alot of brands before I chose this one. It wasn't too bad to set up- but you gotta read that manual first. I like how you use the microphone that's included to set up your speakers. I have a great sound now to go with my 50" Plasma TV. The heat factor that some of the reviewers talked about, I won't have an issue with because I put it in an open shelf unit along with my other electronics sitting next to my Plasma TV.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: NewEgg Rocks!!!

5 out of 5 eggsLovin' It!!

Pros: Easy Setup, Easy wiring, excellent sound!! Where else are you going to find a 7.1 Channel Receiver for this price?! Onkyo quality.

Cons: Strange controls to get used to...my old RCA receiver was much more straight forward. Even the screen leaves you guessing as to what is going on (have to read manual to understand screen output).

Remote kinda sucks...jammed alot of buttons into a small space. Have to remember to hit Receiver button to control everything once you pick the mode you need! (Can be remedied by buying a Harmony remote or the likes!)

Other Thoughts: Paired this up with a Polk Audio 10" Powered Subwoofer. Let the system go ahead and automatically setup speaker levels through the microphone included. Everything sounded pretty good, but was getting some muddy bass at times, so manually went in and changed crossover setting to 100 HZ (was at 120HZ per microphone) and all is good now! Very powerful receiver. Can't wait to get my new in-wall speakers to see how they will sound paired with this receiver (only running 5.1 right now!) Overall a GREAT BUY!!! Thanks, Newegg!

5 out of 5 eggsINCREDIBLE

Pros: Has everything! You can hook everything up to this.I've been looking for a decent 7.1 for some time.Couldn't pass this up and glad I didn't.For a receiver like this I would have expected a much higher price.

Cons: My lcd only has a 60000 hr life span. That's gonna go quick now, cause I don't wanna turn it off.Everything sounds like I'm really there.

Other Thoughts: ONKYO really topped themselves with this one!And Newegg...YOU GUYS ROCK!!!!

5 out of 5 eggsVery pleased with this Receiver

Pros: High-current power x 7 channels, nice clean sound, a lot of surround decoding options, rock-solid Onkyo construction, plenty of connection options, Audyssey 2EQ auto speaker setup, Audyssey Dynamic EQ, zone 2 option, Newegg sale price and free delivery. Back surround speaker channels are bi-amping compatible. Incredible dynamic range even a low volumes!

Cons: I wouldn't have minded full HDMI outputs that carried sound as well video (Only pass-through HDMI on this unit) but at this price point I don't mind using the digital optical output for incredible digital 7.1 surround sound or stereo music. Using 2 cables instead of one is is not worth $150 more dollars to me to upgrade to the Onkyo SR 606.

Other Thoughts: I replaced my circa 1996 Sony 5.1 surround sound receiver that was supposedly rated at 100 watts per channel. This Onkyo SR 506 rated at 75 watts per channel has MUCH more power than the old Sony rated at 100 watts.

5 out of 5 eggsWow...

Pros: Automatic Setup using the including microphone
Inputs/Outputs galore
Outstanding sound and easy setup.

Cons: Size/Weight - When replacing an older (20 years) receiver, had to make extra room for this one. Not a big deal considering the performance, however.

Other Thoughts: If you're looking for a top notch receiver on a budget, don't look any further.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Sound...but...

Pros: Upgraded from a lower end unit to this, and my speakers immediately sounded better.

Cons: Subwoofer pops, I think the more advanced models in this line may have more control of the switching from sound types, I think it happens when it switches to digital and the only setting here is auto. Right speaker started popping at nine weeks when the unit is Off. I am waiting for 9AM to see how long I will be without sound. I found many other consumers with popping problems online. Mine is unique, lucky me.
