ONKYO TXNR906 7.1-Channel Black Home Network Receiver

Pros: Great features; beautiful sound; easy setup; solid physical construction.

Cons: Very short lifespan. I purchased this unit in late 2009 and I had to get the unit serviced in late 2010 when all of the audio sources ceased to function. Two years later the same thing has started happening again.

Other Thoughts: This was my first Onkyo purchase and will likely be my last. Given the price I paid for this unit I am very disappointed.

Pros: If you love music, this is it. Very clean. Don't bother with anything less if you can afford this. Sound wise it might as good as the 876 or 806, but look at all the features you get from this. Networked, assignable speaker configuration, HDMI, USB, etc... I haven't had the time to check every feature out. Its like a small computer just for music. I waited a long to update my receiver to match my speakers B&W Matrix and nearly bought some much cheaper one during this wait. I am glad waited.. I did stretch my budget but well worth the wait.

Cons: Cant think of anything yet... of course it is heavy and big...

Other Thoughts: I got it for good price from Newegg. Watch out for the price, day to day if you are interested It fluctuates here and other online sites. You probably save a lot by buying this than by adding other accessories / HW to get all the features you would like in the future.. networking, streaming music, USB, speaker set ups. Sure if you not a sound freak.. you probably wouldn't care.. don't waste your money then.

Pros: Feature rich, 4 HDMI inputs, HQV-Reon video up conversion.
Video up-conversion is excellent. The standard definition broadcast somehow looks more depth and 3-dimensional. People who trashed it with low rating just don't know what it's capable for. Sure, a denon 4308ci or yamaha Rxz9 will be nice, but they are 2 times more expensive. The sound is detail and crisp. You need to have efficient speaker to enjoy this amp. How many watts RMS on a speaker has nothing to do with the capability of this amp. It is not a pure class A amp, period, don't expect that it will drive a tower speaker that is not efficient. I own true high end speakers (Thiel CS6) and pure class A amps (Krell KSA-200). They are a league on their own and you cannot use these mass production receiver to drive a pair of Thiel and expect it to have the same results as a Krell. Please remember, how many watts per channel is a marketing gimmick, does not relate to the quality of sound it outputs.

Cons: Runs hot. Takes a while to switch sources.

Other Thoughts: The connections on the back are too cramped.

Make sure you get some good quality interconnects to squeeze the most out of this amp. I use pure silver interconnects and ps audio power plants to further augment the sound quality and video quality.

Pros: Lots of options, I am upgrading from a Yamaha 6.1 system and I am blown away by the little stuff that I was missing until I got this unit. The sound quality was exactly what I would expect from a unit in this price range, HUGE difference from my old receiver even using the same speakers.

Cons: It is heavy and it does generate quite a bit of heat especially during a long movie at modest volume levels.

Other Thoughts: This receiver is just a ton of fun, worth every penny.

Pros: Good sound quality, sounded more dynamic more smoother and powerful than my older Onkyo 603X.
It plays loud and clear, it can play so loud that my spaker went distorted!!

It is heavy, 54 pounds! It is hard to move around, which it means hard to get stolen :)

3 Transformers, and almost like modular amplifier stage, but it all share the same power supplie and transfomer.

Cons: For a receiver in this price range (2000+ retail price) I would expect better sound quality than this.

It has quite a big in-rush current, but it is common for the toroidal tranformers.

The Audessy XT make musics sound a lot more Dynamic, but at the same time it makes it sound fake, almost like the software WOW or SRS they use in PC.

Other Thoughts: I'm connecting it with my PC. Using an Asus HDMI deluxe( it has the Burr Brown PCM-1796 DACS, wich only can be found in 3000+ receivers) sound card, sounds fabulous with PC gaming!

I'm sure it will be better to use an external amplifier for the Front main speakers, since most of the time we listen to music at 2 ch expect moveis.

I give the rating at 4 eggs because I simply think the sound quality can be little it better with this receiver at this price range.

Pros: While it has almost all current features as of 2008-2009, Onkyo TX-NR906 remains faithful to Onkyo's origin - excellent sound reproduction in stereo or surround. I thought the remote control is very functional and practical in all devices I have tried (TV, Blu-Ray player, DVR, old DVD/CD players).

Cons: Onkyo TX-NR906 seems to produce more heat than others even when it is not actively operating, so it can be annoying and concerning to whom are not used to this type of receiver. Keep in mind that, unlike the old days with traditional amplifiers, today's receiver is essentially a mini-PC that performs lots calculations plus amplifying triple number of sound channels.

Other Thoughts: I read the previous reviewer's comments about how good the Yamaha RX-Z9 is. Indeed it is with the price point. I am old fashioned, but I know how important (and difficult) it is to create a balanced and matched system in order to enable every components within the system to shine. So to me it seems a bit unfair and premature to make those assessment when the reviewer was kind of admitting his lack of planning and research before making the purchase and conducting the tests.

Pros: Not as heavy as my Yamaha RXZ9. Great video output on large screen tv. i own a 73" mitsubishi dlp diamond edition. Denon blu ray player.

Cons: get way too hot on medium use. once i crank it up good bye sound quality. this receiver starts distorting at high volumes. i think it has to do with its THD rating it snot rated at full load. i could be wrong. i hope who ever gets the receiver understands that its not all that great. it does on paper but man this unit gets hot. My yamaha RXZ9 ways twice as much but i can run it all day long at ear bleeding volumes and not loose sound quality. Make sure your speakers mach up to it as well. keep in mind i am useing 350watt rms speakers and they are all towers front and rears. with matching center channel.

Other Thoughts: look for a yamaha or denon within the same price range. i think they will have a much smoother sound and cleaner power.

get a monster power center..a must have for high end audio & video

Pros: Extremely Heavy!!! but I like that, there's a huge power supply in there just for the audio. I like how Onkyo layed out the parts inside, even got 2 internal fans directed toward some heat sinks and whatever else gerating lots of heat. I took a peek inside. I absolutely love the performance. I run 2 Polk Audio Lsi15s, one LsiC, 2 Lc surrounds, all 4ohms. It can get very loud but clear all the way.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: Don't like the remote that much, not as nice as the unit itself. The on screen menu is so so, not pretty, seems outdated, but not important. I haven't hooked it up to my network yet, hope it's as great as other features.
