Onkyo delivers home theater the way it was meant to be with the HT-S9100THX. This advanced home theater system has both audio and video processors that work together to deliver an immersive experience. This THX I/S Plus Certified system can handle full 1080p video processing and Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
Audyssey 2EQ and Dynamic EQ measure room acoustics and take them into account when setting up crossovers, levels and delays so you get a well balanced sound. They also work to keep sound balanced as you adjust the volume. Onkyo’s Wide Range Amp Technology has a broad frequency range with minimal noise so signal being amplified is pure and clean.
In order to be a truly integrated system Onkyo crafted the speakers to both work together and to compliment the receiver. The Front, Center and Surround speakers have 2x12cm cones and 1x2.5cm soft dome tweeter with a frequency response of 50Hz-45kHz. The 290W powered subwoofer has a 30cm cone and a frequency response from 20Hz to 100Hz. If you’re not careful you’ll think you’re watching the movie in the theater.

Pros: Easy setup. Sounds great with HDMI and Blu-Ray (via PS3). Simple adjustments with simple menus. Does sound better than the 7100 system. Watched CARS, remastered STAR WARS EPISODE II, TRANSFORMERS, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and they were all awesome. Much better than my previous Onkyo 5.1 from 2001. House of Flying Daggers on Blu-Ray and PLANET EARTH/BBC was amazing.
Cons: While the speaker wire is color-coded to help with installation, it is cheap and the system is hurt significantly. Subwoofer setup can be problematic due to the low frequency during auto setup...be sure to maximize the output when you set it up.
Other Thoughts: Upgrade speaker wire to 12 AWG or 14 AWG speaker wire and everything will come alive.
Both the speakers and the receiver are compatible with Banana Plugs.
Onkyo AS240 speakers stand can work but are not made for the speakers. The speakers are very big, so be prepared.
Newegg promotion saved me tons. It was at my home within 48 hours of ordering.

Excellent Deal

Pros: Excellent sound quality for HTIB. Faithfully reproduces everything from music, to movies, to video games. Great surround sound accuracy. Sturdy construction of speakers, easy to set up and get going (especially with Audyssey EQ microphone). Large number of inputs... great selection of decoders to choose from. Ability to add a second Speaker B group to the receiver. Good upconversion quality (if you are using the HDMI output for your HDTV). The picture from my DVR box seems to have improved since running it through the stereo. There are probably many more PROS that I will find as I use this system over the years. I plan on upgrading the front speakers one day, and I think this receiver can handle them.
Cons: Shipping box is HUGE... probably 5'x3'x3'!! Included speaker wires are very cheap.
Also, the sound settings need to be tweaked even after running the microphone set-up utility. I needed to turn up the subwoofer and the front L-R speakers. I also turned up the treble +2db. The "THX" setting on the subwoofer is not nearly powerful enough... I have it turned up about 20% further than that level. This could be due to the carpeting on my floors.
System is not as loud as 1200w implies. You may need to turn up the gain from your sources. Thankfully, the receiver makes that very easy. I must say though, it is more than loud enough for my 1400sq/ft apt. At -20db, I have plenty of volume for movies with LOTS more headroom to go.
Other Thoughts: For the last 4 years, I've been using a mediocre $400 HTIB and have waited for a good product to upgrade. I chose this setup for numerous reasons: 1) Speaker drivers are large, which is necessary for producing accurate low-mids. It would not have been worth the money to get another HTIB with small 3" speakers. Even the surrounds are bigger than my old mains! 2) The included receiver is loaded with features equivalent to $700 receivers on the market right now. With its 1080p upconversion and TrueHD/DTS-HS decoding capabilities, this investment won't be obsolete for YEARS to come.
Overall, I spent $1100 including the ONKYO9100, 16 gauge speaker cable, high quality satellite mounts, and heavy duty steel speaker stands. Do not go cheap on the accessories... you may as well buy a lesser HTIB if you're going cheap on the other stuff. I am running it with a 52" Philips 1080p LCD, PS3, Blu-Ray, and TWC DVR and couldn't be happier with my home entertainment system.

Pros: Hate to call it HTB, because its more than HTB. I had done setup automatically, and some manual adjustments and there it is, wonderful system.
Cons: Every one knows about the speaker wires that comes with it and probably its deliberate. Go buy 12 gauge wire and about 16 banana plugs from a good website and you will be all set.
Other Thoughts: I have a 18' by 15' by 24' listening space and I cannot bring up the volume to -20 and can sense the vibration in the windows and floor.

Volume Problem Solved!

Tech Level: high - Ownership: 1 month to 1 year
Pros: This an update to my earlier review...giving the unit a 5th star now. After a great deal of experimentation to discover why the unit wouldn't or couldn't 'open up' the top end volume, some discoveries were made: The unit will deliver very good performance when set up manually, the included speakers are outstanding, and an extra hour with a tape measure and a familiar pair of analog microphones (my ears) proved extremely valuable. A mic and some free software validated what my ears were telling me...but it wasn't necessary.
The amp and speakers were exhaustively compared to two other amps and four other speaker sets (these speakers on those amps, and those speakers on this amp) and it was obvious that this amp's setup utility, Audyssey, was holding it back. The speakers sound quality easily beat three, tied the fourth, and 'opened up' at a much lower input level, making them the easy winner. It will now keep up with amps in it's weight class...nicely.
Cons: First, the Audyssey automatic configuration utility was wrong in several areas and overly protective of the included speakers.
Over half of the Audyssey-derived time delays - and therefore levels - for the speakers were wrong, in some cases reporting a speaker that was a measured 6' away as being 11'. This was easily corrected with a tape measure and a few minutes. It's actually faster to do it (right) than waiting for the 24 tone sequences to run.
The EQ incorrectly flattened the bass levels for my living room. Bass is subjective, but I have season tickets to the center seats of an excellent orchestra and know what good music 'should' sound like. This was easily fixed by ear. Lastly, Audyssey (what else) will stop amplifying after it determines that one of the speakers is at its cap. Cheap speakers might need this, but the included speakers tested clean at levels that had others blowing their grills onto the floor. Audyssey off - fixed.
Other Thoughts: I now have the stereo and home theater that I wanted. This rig sounds amazing, the different sound fields really augment the sources, THX and Movie/TV for video, the game settings have dramatically improved my Xbox 360 experience. I knocked over a table once trying to dodge an attack - it sounds that real! The music settings really let you recreate the feel you're after and give full rich sound from modest levels all the way to ear-ringing loud. Very nice.
Some advice: Try the automatic setup and if you like it and the resulting measurements check out, great. If not, put the mic away and do it yourself, you'll be glad you did. It's a very good amp, with excellent speakers, and a mediocre setup routine. For the money, this is still hands down the best match-up out there. For the money you'll save over building a comparable system, you can buy a big screen...I know.

Pros: Excellent sound quality, easy setup, quality speakers made of real wood.
Cons: Subwoofer sounds like it has an internal defect - will be replaced. Speaker wire that comes with the system sucks
Other Thoughts: This sound system is beyond comparison for a HTIB. I have heard some great systems and this one takes the cake for sound quality. At high volumes it does not distort and sounds as good if not slightly better then a theater (at least in my basement). Speaker wire was not good enough based on other reviews - all are right. I put in 12 gauge CL3 rated wire in wall and it is just what it needs. THX Monster HDMI cables and sub cable make the system. HD upscaling good but could be better. The sub is great at high volume but at low volume it makes a crackling sound that will be taken care of Onkyo (replacement).
Other people say the speakers are too big. Yeah they are a litle big but not unmanageable. Get some heavy duty mounts for up to 20 lbs and they are not a problem.
Overall an excellent system for the money and I would purchase it again in a heartbeat!!
