4 out of 5 eggsFM section

Pros: Price/sound quality

Cons: the left side of the tuner is low. Amp section is fine, power supply has to be grounded, mine has lf hum if connected to PC and TV and SUB.. They're all on the same powerstrip, and still has annoying hum. Definately needs a grounded plug and true PS ground

2 out of 5 eggsWorked for about a month

Pros: The HDMI switching worked much better with my HTPC than the pass through HDMI on my old unit. Plenty of inputs and outputs. The customer support representatives were friendly, knowledgeable, and did not sound like they were reading from a script.

Cons: It gets very hot. The auto speaker configuration feature failed. Does not sound as powerful as its specifications. The component video went out after about a month. I called Onkyo support and was on hold for 20 minutes. They had me hard reset the unit and the video came back. It worked for about 5 minutes and went out again. I called back and was on hold for 40 minutes. They are having me ship it to a service center at my cost.

Other Thoughts: It is just another cheap piece of electronics made in China. I am disappointed with the receiver and will not buy another Onkyo.

3 out of 5 eggsJust set it up

Pros: Pro? we did get it set up and it did sound and look good.

Cons: Cons? It took several hours to get the cable tv, DVD and CD hooked up and displaying (where video goes out) - to a brand new plasma tv.

Also, manual is not clear - numerous leaps of faith.

And - the microphone automatic speaker setup kept erroring - we had to go in manual to be sure.

I'm a bit skeptical of Onkyo as a brand - I set it up for a family member - I own a Yamaha. I've read other reviews on Onkyo and am waiting to see how this thing runs in 1-2 years. My Yamaha shakes windows out of their tracks for 5 years now - no problem at all. Other reviewers have indicated Onkyo stuff can fall apart after a year or two - we shall see.

Other Thoughts: By the time we had it set up - it did sound good and the picture was good. It was certainly better than before - but I cannot say - great.

My Yamaha WAY outperforms it acoustically. Video - I'd call it even.

I'm going 3 egg. It was not a smooth install, the phonograph didn't want to work, the manual had leaps of faith and Onkyo does not always produce good stuff (based on reviews I've seen elsewhere)

5 out of 5 eggsInexpensive upgrade

Pros: Price - HDMI - Auto speaker setup. Got this for $280 to upgrade an old Sony HT system to get HDMI support. Quick easy setup and now I have ONE remote to control my 52" Samsung LCD, Samsung BDP-1600, HTPC and Comcast cable box.

Cons: Haven't run into any as yet.

Other Thoughts: The auto speaker setup worked great and for the first time in 7 years I am actually getting the kind of separation and 3D audio effects HT is supposed to have.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent

Pros: Brilliant sound quality. Any audiophile knows that discrete circuitry is where it's at, and that's how Onkyo rolls. I've tried other receivers twice this price from other brands, and they do not compete.

Cons: As someone else has mentioned, it does produce ground hum through my subwoofer *if* I do not use the coaxial digital input. This isn't really a problem since my PC is plugged in digitally.

Other Thoughts: I build amplifiers for a living. Despite the flaw, I cannot give this receiver less than five stars. It's a great sounding unit.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Great for the price. Have a pair of Klipsch B-2's and Dayton 10" sub (just a 2.1 setup) wired to the unit and it sounds spectacular.

Cons: None

5 out of 5 eggs2nd Onkyo - great brand for receivers

Pros: Slightly lighter/smaller than my previous Onkyo receiver
All around an excellent brand.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: This is my 2nd Onkyo receiver. Bought first one in 2000 and it still works like a champ, just doesn't have HDMI connections. I got a new BP and LCD and could still get audio pass through from TV to receiver, but I just couldn't resist getting HDMI receiver to minimize cabling.
