Onkyo delivers home theater the way it was meant to be with the TX-SR607. This advanced receiver has audio and video processors working together for a totally immersive experience. A variety of inputs, including satellite radio, make this the logical center of your entertainment universe.
This 7.2 channel receiver comes with Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby PLIIz and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding for audio that sounds more like what the producers had in mind. The Audyssey DynamicEQ dynamically adjusts the EQ settings as the volume is changed so dialogue will always be clear. CinemaFILTER technology adjusts the tonal balance of the soundtrack to account for room size.
HDMI pass through helps minimize cable clutter by eliminating extra cabling. You don't need to switch inputs on your TV; just plug all the video cables into the receiver and the Faroudja DCDi/EDGE processor will send it all to your TV through the HDMI cable after cleaning up the signal and removing the artifacts that sometimes occur. Onkyo will bring your multimedia experience to new heights of performance with this impressive receiver!
Pros: This system was a snap to setup. Audyssey is interesting to setup... my kids weren't impressed with how long it took (about 15-20 minutes) and my wife was a bit surprised by the sounds it emitted while performing its detection phase... however the sound quality it achieved with my older speakers is incredible. The remote was easy to configure for use with my various components (TV, Tivo, dvd player, etc) though I did have some misgivings with it providing codes via the on-screen menu.
I like the number of video inputs it provides for, and the video switching capability is good.
Cons: I wish the video conversion was a bit better, however it's still acceptable.
This may not be something that Onkyo could address, however the OSD is inconsistent... it works with non HDMI video, and doesn't work with all HDMI video... does with some... It's probably dependant upon if HDCP is active for a given video feed...
Video blanks for a couple of seconds whenever changing video sources.
oh, and it does run a little hot... but then again, I've experienced similar heat issues with several Sony brand receivers as well... give it a little breathing room.
You probably should break down to read the fine manual so you know how to map the various video inputs, and audio inputs. It's not hard, but not super intuitive.
Other Thoughts: Remote has separate volume controls for the TV which I really don't want... The remote doesn't support macro's which would be a good thing... so you have to specifically turn on each device if you don't have HDMI 1.3a spec equipment (TV is HDMI 1.2, Tivo S3 is HDMI 1.2, and DVD player is HDMI 1.2... so none of this gear will automatically turn on when the HDMI detects a power on for a device...
This is my second Onkyo receiver. the first was a HT-R530 which was part of an Onkyo HT-S780 home theater system. This receiver actually produces a bit less power than the older receiver. I replaced the older receiver because I wanted to simplify the home theater experience for my wife and kids. (I couldn't switch HDMI, or up convert component or composite with the older system). Up Converting isn't great, but it's better than nothing... and the only thing I up-convert is the family Wii anyway.
DO NOT use the audyssey mic just sitting on your couch! it works much better on a tripod.

Pros: Lots of inputs. Nice audio processing. Decent UI. Front-panel inputs, including HDMI. Video conversion, lots of speaker outputs, second zone. Basically, nothing here that can't be found in other makes/models, but definitely seems like a healthy collection of features for the price.
Cons: Seems to be some overlap between HDMI and component inputs, with respect to input selection. I don't have enough of each to test to be sure, but you might not be able to use all of the HDMI and all of the component at the same time, if for no other reason than that there's no way to select which of each you want to use.
There are a myriad of signal-processing options, with all sorts of rules about what processing you can use with what kind of inputs. Maybe that's typical of receivers, or at least those dealing with digital inputs, but I found it all very confusing. One particularly useful option, the "night mode" (compresses the dynamic range so that you can turn the volume down low and not bother other people, but still hear everything), is usable only with certain kinds of Dolby Digital input streams.
Other Thoughts: You can rename the inputs, but note that the panel display toggles between input name and user-customized name ("Display" button on the remote toggles). Unless you have it in user-customized name mode, you won't see the name you gave the input. The receiver does remember the mode, so you can just leave it in that mode and always see the user-configured name.
All in all, I'm amazed at the quality and flexibility this receiver offers, given the price (especially with one of NewEgg's combo deals!). But there's gotta be some "above and beyond" to get five eggs from me. This is a good quality, competitive offering, but it doesn't have any sort of killer feature that would put it over the top. Maybe if it had s-video inputs, especially with upconversion, that would've done it. But, it doesn't. :(

Pros: Six HDMI ports. Great sound. Very easy to configure. I find the up-conversion to be satisfactory for the price range of the unit.
Minimal number of buttons on the front of the unit. I happen to like that compared to other units that try to place a button on the front for every controllable feature.
Using the included mike, the automatic setup is pretty accurate. Just position the mike about ear level in the center of the viewing area and start the test. It will set the delays necessary to get accurate surround. It will identify bad speakers (I had one satellite speaker that was very week and didn't know it until the test failed).
Cons: As others have mentioned, the unit gets warm. Most units of similar output that I've seen get about the same temp. Just don't place anything directly above it. Give it some breathing room and it should be fine.
Other Thoughts: I'm not a big fan of the glossy black finish. I would have preferred a satin finish.
Another thing that receiver manufacturers could do would be to add good DVR controls (TIVO-like) to their remotes so one remote can truly control everything. I still have to use my DVR remote in order to utilize all the DVR functionality.
New Egg has some of the best shipping services in the industry!!!

Pros: Very Impressive. The sound quality is great. You can configure the system by using the presets or by manually tuning to set the system up for any size room. Purchased with Polk Audio RM6750 speakers and the sound is great whether listening to music, watching a DVD, or just watching TV. Remote is a Universal so if you have different brands of equipment you can program them to work on one remote. My wife likes that.
Cons: If you don't have a HD TV, which we don't yet, you have to use the LCD screen on the receiver to program.
Other Thoughts: I owned some Onkyo equipment a long time ago and was happy with that so I thought this was a good purchase. Very impressed. It even improved the picture quality of our TV. I'm sold on Onkyo.

A Feature Packed Reciever for a Great Price

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Great Sound, Coupled with Klipsch Speakers. Extremely Easy Setup. The RIHD feature is perfect when not wanting to use the home theater system (ie mornings). Basically it passes sound and video through the reciever to the TV when enabled, simply leave the reciever off and sound and video comes through the tv. Turn the reciever on and now using home theater speakers. Very Clever.
Price is very good for the level of quality.
Cons: I cant find a good code for my cable box's remote to work the majority of the functions of the sr607. Note this is not a con of the reciever. Im trying to come up with something.
Other Thoughts: I've been reseraching various recievers, reading user manuals, user reviews etc. and I'd like to point out that 5 star reviews of this product have almost doubled in two months, and I cant be happier with mine. I'd also suggest that people critically read many bad reviews of this device. For one earlier reviewer with "high" knowledge was disappointed that he couldn't name an Hdmi input and a composite input to the same Input name. He wanted both to be on the input "Game" but had to use the "VCR" input for the composite, and "Game" for the Hdmi. So he gave it 3 stars. This complaint simply doesnt make any sense, and this person would have the same issue with a 8000$ denon reciever. I would suspect that "high" knowledge wasn't the case, and this person had not done sufficient research into recievers to know what he was getting. There are countless cases of this type of review. Read Critically! I'd recommend this product to anyone for mid level quality for a below mid level price.
