3 out of 5 eggsLove the receiver - hate the HDMI board problems

Pros: I have owned this receiver for over two years now. Awesome video and sound playback, features, etc.

Cons: Do some research online - Onkyo appears to have a known HDMI board issue with a number of their receivers. My unit started having intermittent sound problems and over a period of time the sound failed totally. I had to pay near $100 to have the receiver shipped to a service center while it was under warranty. It was fixed and I was happy - this was four months ago. Over the past few weeks the receiver started acting up again and today the sound failed totally. I have contacted Onkyo support and am hoping they will cover the repair out of warranty.

Other Thoughts: Would I buy another Onkyo receiver given what I know now about the HDMI board issues? Time will tell...I'll have to see if Onkyo will repair the receiver a second time, and this time out of warranty.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Machine

Pros: Nice clear sound, This thing will help keep the house warm all winter.

Cons: HDMI should be recalled on this receiver

Other Thoughts: I had a carver Receiver before this onkyo. I have to give this one 4 stars. I did have to return this one. I will try one more.

3 out of 5 eggsOnkyo HDMI boards

Pros: A lot of pro's but, read below..............

Cons: Some Onkyo's, what percentage, who knows, Onkyo units 1007, 3007,5007's have faulty HDMI boards & have to be sent in to Onkyo to get them replaced, U pay shipping in. Or return unit to etailer if it happens soon after purchase. This is well noted in popular Audio Video Science forums.

Other Thoughts: I bought a different brand with less known issues. And that being said, there are a lot of good Onkyo units out that will not need HDMI board replacement service.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome OOPS

Pros: Awesome sound. Good up-convert quality. Lots of inputs and outputs.

Cons: Broken within 24 hours. HDMI inputs went south almost immediately, leaving only component in working. Audio section started failing the next day. What a disappointment.

Other Thoughts: I was into real high end audio at one time. Today, I just need something to make my TV sound good. Problem is, once you know what good sound is, it's hard to go back. This unit strikes a happy medium on cost/performance scale. It delivers the goods. Those who say this unit runs hot have never owned high end gear. The excellent sonics of this amp were obvious from the start. Speaker control is there. Lots of detail with great finesse. Lows are well defined. To get this quality requires real power, which means heat. Maybe it was thumped too hard in shipping. In any case, the unit was returned and waiting for the next. My only regret is not going for the 3007 instead, as it has a better power supply (4 trannies).

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome AV Receiver

Pros: Does everything it’s advertised as capable of. Noticeable sounds and video improvement in my setup. As for the "clicking sound" I don't notice it unless I'm trying to hear it. Also, Onkyo has provided new firmware to speedup the switching and lessen the clicking sound.

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I was a bit worried when the unit came without the customary double packing I’m used to from newegg but box was handle nicely and not damaged.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing

Pros: This unit is very easy to set up (easy being a relative term of course), has a very good calibration system, lots of options, and very good features. One of my big reasons for getting this one over some of the cheaper ones is the streaming music - its so easy to just log in to your pandera account and stream music !

Also, I consider the solid state relays a pro. Anyone that understands electronics will appreciate an actual physical separation of the circuits, achieved with real solid state relays. When the sound source changes the circuit switches, causing the solid state relay to switch. This results in the "clicking" that people complain about. To be clear, this is ONLY a problem when watching TV, you will never have this happen in the middle of a movie, video game, CD, etc. And really, who watches TV anymore? I don't even have cable

Cons: If you use it for a very long time it does get a little hot. At the very min. never store something on top of it to keep the vents clear, but I actually bought a little computer fan to sit on top of it (which I don't even turn on unless I'm going to play FF13 for 16 hours straight).

Other Thoughts: Full 7.1 speaker system (going to set up the last 2 channels upstairs when I get around to it), so i don't use the highs or wides, but I have high end speakers (Definitive) that fill the room anyhow, so its not necessary. Mitsubishi HC5500 1080p projector on 100"
screen. All hooked up to my Xbox360, PS3, and computer (all streamless easy hookups via HDMI). New visitors generally have their jaw drop off when I demonstrate the system, and this is the heart of it !

4 out of 5 eggsGood Stuff

Pros: Good, Solid Performer,
2/25/2010 Firmware update fixed relay clicking and Delay

Cons: Initial Switching Delay and Noise

Other Thoughts: Used 200101 Aiwa HTiB Speakers without a Sub and it still sounds amazing, Going from 275 watts total to 135/Channel I was afraid that these Speakers would sound terrible, if I had a good Subwoofer I might keep this set-up. But, I have a Onkyo SKS-HT870 Set ordered.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Sound!!!

Pros: Great sound quality, Plenty of inputs (including Phono), Ethernet connection, Audyssey EQ, THX modes, and plenty of power. Will pass through 1080P/24.

Cons: The remote is not back lit, relays click a lot during BD previews or when switching channels / commercials.

Other Thoughts: I mostly use this to watch BDs so the clicking relays only happen during the previews, once the movie starts there is no problem. The sound is very clean and the DSP modes are excellent, which far out weighs any of the cons IMHO. Plan on spending a couple of full afternoons setting up all of the features, and fitting it to your needs.
NEWEGG Rocks as usual!

5 out of 5 eggsONKYO TXNR1007

Pros: Flexiblity

Cons: List Price....

Other Thoughts: I've had this unit for 3 months and it is everything I had hoped it was and more. The unit is solid and not a chore to understand. The well written manual is easy to follow making set up a breeze. If you want this system with less power consider the 800 series model it has a little less power with most all of the features. New Egg had the best price on Black Friday...thanks I saved $600!

1 out of 5 eggsTX-NR1007B

Pros: Great audio, Newegg Customer Service Representative was very helpful and courteous.

Cons: VIDEO: The HDMI video out cycles every 2-3 seconds between a good picture and a blank picture. Once in a while, there are video artifacts present. It made no difference on the HDMI input (Directv and blueray). Onkyo tech support could not help, even after resetting the receiver. The clicking sound others have mentioned is also a problem.

Other Thoughts: I have a RMA number and will return it for some other receiver.
