3 out of 5 eggsA bit disappointed

Pros: Very capable receiver, easy to set up, great sound and video

Cons: after about 2.5 years the sound board suddenly quite functioning.

Other Thoughts: I replaced a Sony surround sound with the Onkyy and put the Sony down in my sound system down stairs and the Sony is still going. Onkyo is aware of the sound board problem and are addressing it fairly so I didn't give it a worse rating. It is a bit of a pain, so I got a Pioneer VSX-822 K to replace and it looks good so far.

5 out of 5 eggsFollow up review 2.5 years later.

Pros: All things I said in my earlier review 2.5 years ago are still true, though I can now say that iPod connectivity works for iPad 2's as well.

Cons: The biggest flaw this receiver has is the remote. Slowly over time, the volume up function has failed. I can only get it to work maybe 10% of the time now. Luckily there is a solution for me - Onkyo makes a remote control App for iDevices, so most of the time I use my old iPhone 3GS or my iPad2 to control my receiver. It actually makes it easier to use the multi-zone features and surround function. And, yeah, I can turn up the volume too.

Other Thoughts: A lot of the network connectivity issues were taken care of by a software update a while ago, which is good considering I control it through the network a lot. Overall this was a great purchase, and I would buy another Onkyo in a New York Minute.

1 out of 5 eggsPiece of Garbage. Expensive Brick.

Pros: It came beautifully packaged in a box.

Cons: Every aspect of this device is a CON. On top of that, Onkyo Customer Service is horrible.

Other Thoughts: DO NOT BUY THIS RECEIVER! Since I took it out of the box, it's been non-stop issues. On the initial setup, most of the HDMI ports did not work. After reading around, I come to find out that this is a common issue on Onkyo's receivers. Because I was on a business trip I was not able to setup the receiver until about a month after I received it. After I found out that the ports were not functioning I contacted the seller, but it was already passed the return/exchange date. So I had to call Onkyo to see what they can do. I had to drive about 30 miles away to a Onkyo authorized repair shop (who by the way is not open on weekends and close at 5pm) and drop off my device. It took over a month to get my receiver back from repair, because they had to ship it out to Onkyo.

After picking up my receiver, I noticed that there were a bunch of scuff marks on it. I guess they had to tear into it to fix the problem. So much for my expensive new looking device. The HDMI ports that were not functioni

1 out of 5 eggsLot of units are bad

Pros: Great features for the money. Onkyo usually a good brand

Cons: My unit had the following series of issues
- The unit constantly switches to a CBL/SAT input a few seconds after changing the input to something different
- The remote works fine for every function EXCEPT power on/off.
- The remote does not work for 100% of the functions
- No buttons on the receiver itself work at all. The power button, input selectors, and even the volume do not function whatsoever on the device (not using the remote, pressing the buttons on the unit itself).

Other Thoughts: I know you can't but them new anymore, but thought i'd write this review for anyone considering picking up a used one.. there is considerable risk here.

3 out of 5 eggsAnalog Multi-Channel Assignment Impossible

Pros: Great processing unit and has plenty of power. Millions of features I would never use, but nice to know I could if I wanted to. Bought this to power my THX setup and accept a mutli-channel (8) input from my home theater PC.

Cons: Can't for the life of me figure out why it won't use any more than the 2 stereo inputs on the multi-channel block for the bd/dvd. Most processors let you select multi-channel analog as the input source while this one does not. No configuration will make it simply output the 8 channel inputs to the appropriate speakers.

5 out of 5 eggsPowerful, Feature Packed, Great Value!

Pros: More features than most people will ever need. Well made metal not plastic door and cabinet. Large Fluid volume control. Lots of sounds settings inputs outputs
Go to Onkyo website download the manual.
Shop around do the search on this unit and ones like it and this will be one on your list for the features and this price point. I picked this one over the 708 for the cooling fans and the 135w/output because I have a pair vintage Polk SRS 2.3 tls for the fronts and wanted to do away with a Carver separate amp to power them this unit handles them just fine. I like the TV-Logic setting it is great for regular HDTV watching. Like I said read the manual, so much cool stuff and settings.

Cons: None for me. Not a con but I tried to update the firmware and the message was that it was already at the current revision.

Other Thoughts: Don't forget the learning remote is full of features too.
I also got, off Newegg of course, a wireless access point for this unit that works great for network streaming and Internet radio it's a Trend Net TEW-647GA. This unit did not come from Tenn or Calf it come from Edison New Jersey, strange. I think if another company is not moving product NewEgg has a list and if they run low on stock they call them. Anyway it was new and the box was clean and unopened but it took 4 days to get it to Hou Texas, no biggie.

5 out of 5 eggsCan't go wrong with this one...

Pros: Excellent audio processing and sound. Very very low noise from the unit itself. Very transparent. I became aware how bad my dvd player's DAC actually was when A/B'ing different sources. Easy to update the firmware. Plenty of room for expansion and what I'll use it for over it's lifespan.

Cons: My comcast box doesn't seem to like it too much via HDMI. Gotta love comcast. Some of the audio routing to the sub channel can be a little weird. No backlit remote for dark rooms.
