2 out of 5 eggsNot Great

Pros: Looked Good

Cons: Piece of Junk

Other Thoughts: The HDMI out on the receiver died after about 6 months. The waranty is worthless unless you keep the original box and pay a ton to ship it back. The service centers Onkyo listed on their site was false.

1 out of 5 eggsDo not buy

Pros: On screen (TV) menu display), renaming inputs

Cons: HDMI Out not working

Other Thoughts: We've had this for about 9 months and the HDMI out port (maybe the whole panel?) just went bad. I know its not the devices or the cables, because they work when put directly into the TV. The telltale sign is that even the Onkyo menus don't show up on the TV. I'm very disappointed. Will not buy Onkyo again.

5 out of 5 eggsgreat deal

Pros: Very good deal for the price, I have owned ONKYO speakers for years and always performed well, and they go nicely with the reciever. Sound from the reciever is great

Cons: the how to set the Dolby 5.1 , speaker ranges, and loudness for each speaker was kind of difficult to figure out. Make sure that the surround speakers are on speaker A then you can find all the settings. I had A and B on together and the setting options where not available. Its always that one little thing.

5 out of 5 eggsOnkyo TX-SR308 5.1 Receiver

Pros: My Sony receiver and center speaker was not working so I asked my friend that is more knowledgeable in the world of electronic home systems what a good receiver at a low price would be? He suggested a Onkyo TX-SR308 5.1. He said this was the best quality receiver out there for the money. I took his advice and ordered one and he was right. It has worked great and the power was plenty for my current surround sound speakers. No complaints,

Cons: Haven't found any yet. I really don't expect to find any in the future.

5 out of 5 eggsWould buy again

Pros: Sounds Great! On-screen menus (with HDMI) make set up a breeze.

Cons: No mic for auto setup. I knew it when I bought it, so no biggie.

Other Thoughts: With 10" mains an 10" 100W sub the sound is amazing! Put in the speaker distances and away we go. My sub is by me next to the couch but sounds like its next to the mains when the distances are set up. Definitely recommend for the budget minded, like me.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat unit

Pros: Nice unit. HDMI 1.4 works fine. Able to attach CD to TV/CD input. Dolby HD and DTS HD MA works fine. Auto detects when attached to my PC running Win 7 x64 with 5.1 sound. Auto lip sync.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: There is a bug in the Win 7 WMC. When using HDMI sound with 5.1, WMC will show this error: "“Video Error: Files needed to display video are not installed or are not working correctly. Restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer”"

To fix this, you need to set the sound in Win 7 to 2 speakers (kinda of silly to go backwards) or just disable the WMC navigation sound (what I did).

To disable it, open WMC, go to Tasks, settings, general, visual and sound effects and uncheck 'play sounds when navigating WMC' back out, close and restart wmc.

A search on avsforum 5.1 Missing files will give more info.

5 out of 5 eggsBuy this now.

Pros: Pro.

Cons: Con.

Other Thoughts: This receiver is amazing. I hooked it up to a Polk Audio 5.1 ch/rm6750. I gotta say, the sound that comes out is unbelievable. It's got plenty of hookups, input and output, has good HDMI in/out, (there's no audio/video sync problems), and it doesn't get warm or make any funny noises. It's also got great ventilation, actually almost the entire top of the unit looks like an air conditioner vent. (You can actually see right into the receiver) Takes a little bit of fiddling around to understand exactly what everything is, and what all the buttons do, but when you do have it set up perfectly, it puts out sound that competes with some of the best/most expensive receivers out there. --I'm not sure if it's just in my head, but after hooking my cable box up to the receiver, and then to my TV, I noticed that the picture on the TV looked quite a bit better, and then I realized that I was watching standard definition. I have this idea that it has High Definition scaling, but I'm not sure.

2 out of 5 eggsSolid

Pros: The sound output is great. It has a lot of features, and the OSD is nice.

Cons: I recently purchased quite a bit of equipment for my new basement. I am disappointed in the amount of video/audio sync issues that I'm having. I have never owned a receiver before, so maybe this is normal. But i can notice that my audio is coming to my ears slightly before the mouths move on the TV. I am using HDMI from my Cable box, and DVD player, and then HDMI to my TV. I have set the audio delay at 100ms, but it won't go any higher than that. I don't know why they would set a max limit on this. I also set the speaker distance at the max 30 feet. Hoping that this would help. I also tried the opposite at 1 foot. but neither seems to be working. I'm purchasing an optical cable to try sound in that format, but I'm not too confident.

Other Thoughts: Apparently a lot of people have issues with audio/video sync, but I didn't realize it until now. Maybe i'm just being picky and noticing it because I have a large tv now and this is my first a/v receiver. But it does bother me. I'd love to figure out a better way to do this, but no luck yet.
