1 out of 5 eggsPoor quality, poor customer service

Pros: Sounds better than TV speakers.

Cons: Within a couple of months of ownership, this unit had to go back to Onkyo for repair. Onkyo customer service told me that the closest repair location was in Michigan (from southwest Alabama). Finally I convinced them that Atlanta was, in fact, closer to Alabama than Michigan. Upon return, the unit was functional, however I experience transient syncing issues with all components that are routed through my receiver that are not present when I route my HDMIs directly to the TV. Sound quality is mediocre at best. I recommend this receiver only if you enjoy tracking it via UPS because you are more likely to track it during its travels for repair than you are to actually use it.

1 out of 5 eggsHigh hopes, low score

Pros: This little trooper does put out some sound and has a nice bass. If you get a model that does not break on you, the price is a steal! High hopes there.

The rest of this will be the cons. I have already written a review or two about this but promised an update after I had it for a while, so here it goes.

Cons: I have had to return this thing twice for repairs.

The first dealt with the front two speakers, which started putting out loud loud distortion. The second, not a month later, had to do with the screen flickering on and off every minute, increasing in frequency the longer it stayed on.

I called and spoke with the lead tech of United Radio who handles repairs for various models, not just Onkyo, and he said with modern electronics, especially with HDMI and any related material, you get what you pay for. He did not speak very highly of products made in China, where much of these devices are produced these days, as they do not have the same quality control American industries do. So with Chinese products, it is a hit and miss game at best regarding getting a flawed device or not.

So, but American? Or at least, do NOT buy Chinese. Don't they send us lead tainted foods anyway?

Other Thoughts: The lead tech said there ARE certain systems that are worth the money. As expensive as Boss is, they are worth it. There are others, just don't remember now. Basically, if you want to take a risk, buy one of these cheap ones. If you wanna avoid the head ache, save your money, find and research the expensive ones with the big reputations, and go that route.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent product

Pros: Sound quality is excellent for the price range, plug and play, setup it's a breeze, just added speaker stands for the rear and that completed the system, the passive subwoofer sound is strong and it shakes everything in the house, have enough HDMI inputs to take care of all my needs.

Cons: The receiver could be smaller but it fitted in my living furniture perfectly

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this system to anyone

5 out of 5 eggsGREAT and SIMPLE

Pros: I have only had it a day, but I can tell you what I know for now. I'll write again in a few months to verify if everything is still kosher.

The system was painfully easy to set up. Sure, it would have been nice to have a wireless speaker system, but for the price there is no room to make such a complaint. The manual is not that long, and finding what you need is fairly easy. You will probably need to buy new speaker cable, as what is provided is fairly feeble and will not reach the rear surround sound speakers unless you have a smaller room. On that note, get your 16 gauge speaker cable anywhere BUT Best Buy. I needed 150', and at Lowes I paid $40, but at Best Buy it would have been $70.

HDMI connectors on the receiver are plentiful; enough to accommodate a game system, a dvd/bluray player, and a cable box, and then a fourth to go out to your TV. Buy the extra HDMI cables with this on Newegg if you need more - the deals here are usually sweet.

Cons: Give me a minute, have not found any yet.

I read about some people being dismayed about sound quality or volume - do not be. There are many different sound options in the Onkyo system, designed to accommodate pretty much anything you need. If there is a CON, it would be this, simply because the interface expects you to hand pick what you want instead of sensing a GAME or MOVIE or TV automatically for you. Read the directions on page 28 and 29 to get a handle on what setting you need. If you are a movie freak like myself, set it to Neo6:Cinema, and then goto page 30 to learn how to manually adjust the speaker levels. I set the front two main speakers to +4, the rear SS speakers to +3, and subwoofer to +6. Easy as pie, and the sound is great, with all the rumbling and deep dimension you need for horses galloping or Sauron dying in the Last Alliance. Play with it and have fun - the system is very good, surprisingly so for the price

Other Thoughts: I read about the four major complaints about this system on Newegg: the receiver can overheat, hdmi compatibility issues especially with PS systems, wimpy speaker cables, and a vulnerable downward facing speaker on the subwoofer.

I can not speak on the overheating issue yet, but it seems common sense to keep it in a well ventilated area. I called Onkyo about the HDMI issues - especially with a PS3 (which is my game/dvd/bluray system in one), and they said that is a very rare complaint - in fact the guy I talked to uses PS as I do, and has had three different Onkyo systems in his day, and has had no issues to date. I have no issues right now either. I'll check back in a few months.

The wimpy speaker cable is true - just go and pay the 27 cents per feet of 16 gauge from Lowes and be done with it. The speaker on the bottom of the subwoofer is not guarded, but you'd need pretty big hands or be pretty reckless to damage it. Besides, the speaker faces down; is this really a proble

5 out of 5 eggsAffordible Awesomeness

Pros: First and For most is Cost, great sound for under $300!
Upscaling/upconvert, 3 HDMI ports. 3D compatible (for those of you who care. Easy set up, the programmed listen modes are nice as well.. Great for Gaming

Cons: No Auto-calibration but for $300 bucks what do you want.

Other Thoughts: Hooked up my Media center, and 360 to it and was instantly impressed. watching DVDs on the 360 looked worlds better, even netflix looked great. The sound quality was surprisingly clear for and HTIB system.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat stuff!

Pros: I just got my Onkyo s3300 last night and it was great.
It was very easy to set up and build very solid.
When I unboxing it, all speakers are well warped and no any damage. The wires have different colors and make me very easy to connect them in a short time. S3300 sounds pretty good in this price range and worse the money. Overall, I am pretty satisfy with it because it fits with my PS3 very well.

Cons: No Ipod deck in the box like other Onkyo product.
No HDMI cable in the box, so u need to buy at least two cables for ur TV and game console. One for input and one for output.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Introductory System

Pros: Sleek system, Multitude of inputs, Nice customization options, On screen display, Easy to set up (I used the included manual- I figured it would save time to read the instructions beforehand), Low Price...

I was considering a soundbar, as the wife preferred the sleek styling and lack of wires, but as I was able to find a true 5.1 surround system for such a low price, I also purchased a wireless transmitter for the rear surround speakers at another online store (still hasn't arrived). Last night, we were watching a pretty serious movie and she started to laugh. I looked over at her, and she commented on how cool the movie sounded. Very cool, indeed.

Cons: Hmm, I guess it would be the absence of upconverting analog (component) to digital (HDMI), meaning I have to run a component cord for my Wii out of the receiver to the TV, but that is some serious nitpicking. I mean, I wouldn't even complain about it, but I figured I might as well put something for a con. Even though, I still am rating this 5 stars. For the price of this system at the time of purchase ($279) the quality of the build and sound is pretty much fantastic.

Other Thoughts: I had a moment when I couldn't get my Wii to show on screen, even though I was hearing the music through the receiver. I knew it had to be a user error, and something simple at that. I must have skipped a step in my excitedness to get the system out of the box and wired up! Nonetheless, I changed my component cables back to the original composite cables, and changed the output from the receiver like so, and still no results. I was pretty stumped, took a break and ate my dinner. Then it dawned on me, I had to change the television input from HDMI to Component. Duh. I knew it was something simple.

I've been playing with the system, customizing the audio presets for my Bluray, satellite, Wii, and iPod, and it's been lots of fun hearing the different results. I have my Bluray player set to PCM and I've found Multichannel gives the best results. I definitely recommend this - don't wait!
