Targeting the sweet spot where affordability meets superb functionality, Onkyo’s network-capable TX-NR609 A/V receiver takes you one step closer to fully integrated home entertainment. Now you can kick back on the sofa, play audio files on your computer or stream internet radio, and enjoy the extreme fidelity from this THX Select2 Plus Certified A/V receiver!

Six HDMI inputs - including one on the front panel - provide support for 3D video and ultra-high resolution 4K video upscaling via the cutting-edge Marvell Qdeo processing technologies. HDMI also carries master-quality audio formats from Dolby and DTS, as well as the expanded surround sound of Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Along with 7.2-channel configuration including two subwoofer pre-outs, three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry and Onkyo’s proprietary WRAT, you’ll hear every whisper, feel every explosion and never miss a beat.

A front-panel USB port allows for direct digital connection to both iPod/iPhone and USB storage devices. Another connectivity highlight comes in the form of Powered Zone 2, which allows you to play a different audio source in a second room equipped with stereo speakers. Meanwhile, a suite of Audyssey technologies together with a user-friendly on-screen display and GUI make it easy to set up, adjust settings and navigate your content. All this and more makes the TX-NR609 an irresistible choice for the value-seeking home theater fan.

  • newegg HDMI with 3D Ready and Audio Return Channel The HDMI implementation on the TX-NR609 supports both 3D video and an Audio Return Channel, along with numerous high-resolution formats. 3D video brings exciting possibilities to home entertainment, with movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase and 3D-compatible TVs now on the market. Meanwhile, the Audio Return Channel allows audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner to be sent “upstream” via HDMI to your A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.
  • newegg Dolby TrueHD/PLIIz and dts-HD Master Audio With the integrated Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoders, enjoy lossless and immersive surround sound like it was meant to be. Dolby Pro Logic IIz brings the added dimension of height to create an immersive 7.1- or 9.1-channel surround sound experience from any stereo, 5.1, 6.1, or 7.1 movie, music, TV, or game audio source. Additionally, Dolby Pro Logic IIz is uniquely capable of decoding specially encoded height channel information and also supports the traditional 7.1-channel configurations of Dolby Pro Logic IIx.
  • newegg THX Select2 Plus Certified THX Select2 Plus certification is designed for AV receivers in rooms where the screen-to-seat viewing distance is approximately 10-12 feet, and the room size is approximately 2000 cubic feet. AV receivers that achieve THX Select2 Plus certification meet the world’s most demanding home theater standards for audio quality and performance, and promise to play at reference volume levels with minimal distortion. Featuring THX Loudness Plus that automatically adjusting the front-to-back speaker level and frequency balance, THX Select2 Plus Certified AV receivers ensure you experience all of the rich details of movies when listening below reference level.
  • newegg Network & HD Radio Ready Network Capability delivers internet radio and network audio streaming via Ethernet. Listen to your favorite programs and music in high quality sound from Pandora, vTuner, Mediafly, Napster, Slacker, Rhapsody, SiriusXM and more. Enjoy the crisp clear sound of HD Radio by connecting the optional UP-HT1 module on u-Port capable Onkyo TX-NR609 A/V receiver.
  • newegg Wide Range Amplifier Technology WRAT-equipped amplifiers handle sonic demands of high-resolution formats and provide an improved dynamic S/N ratio and better delivery of momentary power peaks from all other formats such as high-definition and regular DVDs, HD broadcasts and digital files, resulting in unmatchable movie-theater impact and sound purity.
  • newegg Audyssey DSX Audyssey DSX lets you augment a standard 7.1-channel surround set-up with two “front high” channels. Two extra speakers expand the height of the soundstage and help to produce a more realistic and immersive listening experience. Alternatively, on select models Audyssey DSX can be configured to deliver “front wide” channels. These channels carry non-directional audio that adds a new horizontal dimension to your movies and games.

1 out of 5 eggs2year Warranty is 2 years

Pros: Great Sound Quality

Cons: 2 Years means 2 years. This receiver died 2 years and 2 months after my purchase

Onkyo is now another way to spell **** - in my book

Other Thoughts: I will be looking for a receiver that has a longer warranty from now on. I got the dreaded HDMI board problem and cannot find a replacement anywhere!
(E) bay does offer repair or you can buy a bunch of "Non-Tested" ones there too

1 out of 5 eggsDont buy

Pros: Great specs

Cons: Just google TXNR609 model number and "no sound". Same thing happened to me 25 days outside of the 2 year warranty. Owned Pioneer everything up until this point and thought i'd give Onkyo a try. WIll never buy another product from Onkyo. One day it was working, next day no audio output from any channel.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat Sound and Functionality, Failed 22 days before warranty was up

Pros: Great unit when it's working - has all the mid-end bells and whistles. Especially like the HDMI passthrough and the ability to have a second zone.

Cons: Unit failed 22 days before its two year birthday. Luckily I am able to bring it in for warranty. Failed like so many others - woke up today, went to work. Got home from work, put my feet up, turned on the TV, and no sound.

Just in time for the big game too! Lucky me!

Other Thoughts: Other people report trouble getting through to customer service. I had no issue - the tech didn't jerk me around or pretend the unit was fine. All cut and dry, no issues. I just have to drive the stupid thing up to queens to get it fixed.

1 out of 5 eggsAll ONKYO is bad... personal experience

Pros: Works well when it works... just don't expect it to last.

Cons: HDMI will break on you within 2 - 3 years.

Other Thoughts: This is my second ONKYO receiver in 4 years. I had the TX-SR606 previously, and now own the TX-NR609. Both of them the HDMI begins to go out. You'll lose signal and it will come back. Sometimes you'll get a pink screen flash and others it will remain pink for some time. It may not happen on all of your devices at the same time.

The first receiver it would only happen on BluRay discs. Cable TV was no problem, nor playing video games or watching DVD's. I would receive the pink flash that I described above. Eventually the pink flash lead to a longer pink hold. Then the picture would come back.

The second receiver does not do this on the playstation at all that I have noticed thus far. However my cable box blanks out. Ok, let me go back for a moment. I had a DVR that began freezing. The screen turns pink, holds the pink and freezes. I returned the box for a new one. Instantly upon plugging the box in, I get black screen flashes (signal loss). Then the pink freeze happens, but the cable box doesn't totally lock up yet. This receiver is going out as well.

Go with a different company. I feel foolish for spending $1200 thus far on Onkyo receivers... should have learned my lesson the first time. I will never buy another anything Onkyo... that is a promise! Stay away for your own good.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed after 1.5 years

Pros: Great sound. Great product, when it worked.

Cons: Something failed on the main amp and now I can't get any sound output to zone 1 regardless of the source. Attempts to contact Onkyo for customer support have proven futile. I would not recommend the company. Unless something turns around pretty soon, I'll never buy an Onkyo Product again.

Other Thoughts: I have called the authorized support center and had to leave a voicemail. There was not an option to hold. The main onkyo support line does not deal with warranty repairs, you have to regional repair center. I have not had a call back and it has been over a week. I also tried to create a 'ClubOnkyo' account on Onkyo's web site, but it will not let me log in to it. It say's the username or password is invalid. I have even successfully reset my password twice, and still cannot log in. I have sent an email using the Onkyo support web site and have not had a return on that email after 3 days. This is unacceptable.

3 out of 5 eggsNot bad but can get much better!

Pros: Price and easy setup.

Cons: random blue screen flashes. Only happens when receiver warms up and I have had to do a factory reboot to correct this issue once. Seems to be common and caused by a overheating issue.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Receiver

Pros: The room calibration and included microphone make this easy to tune to any room. I also love the Android and Iphone apps that allow me to stream music from each of my mobile phones.

Cons: Not much S-Video support. However since I finally got into the modern era and have a flatscreen plasma its not so much of an issue anymore

Other Thoughts: This unit automatically picks up the audio feed from DirecTv and adjusts it accordingly. THX and Dolby Digital are great.

The built in support for Pandora also comes in handy.

The ability to control this device from my mobile phone is AWESOME.

3 out of 5 eggs

Pros: I bought one over a year ago and loved it so much I bought another. I was not impressed with the reviews on the TX-NR616 so went with this.

Cons: The box showed up with a boot sized hole, and one of the styrofoam supports inside crushed. The unit looked OK and powered on but the HDMI inputs were all dead. Sent it back for a refund. I must have got the last one because they are discontinued now. Maybe I'll try a Yamaha this time.
